As a lot of you probably know Gooch was left off Sporting CP's Europa league roster... and despite having a decent season last year. Injuries hampered the big man.

    As this article reads ( http://www.record.xl.pt/Futebol/Nacional/1a_liga/Sporting/interior.aspx?content_id=773533 )

"The absence of Onyewu is the big news of the list of 23 players signed for Sporting in the Europa League, Updated on Wednesday on the official UEFA."

This leads me to believe that Oguchi may be looking for a new job soon....

    Thoughts?

(Couldn't find an Onyewu thread to post this in so if there is one, my bad with this thread)

Care to add anymore than that? He is always hurt and he isn't anything more than a big cb that plays long ball never liked him and thought he has been overrated his whole career.

I agree that he's always been injured but he's had moments where he has been quality and if he hadn't been injured so much I think he could have reached his 'true potential'.

Anyway I think he should go back to the Belgian Pro League.

He had brief moments of being solid and I agree injuries killed any chance he had of maintaining that. However this potential goes no further than a long ball cb that can't pass out of the back is very good in the air and that's about it.

As for the Belgain league can he even make it there? I was thinking mls.

Fair enough, I have to agree though that his time with the national team is over.

Yea it is should have been sooner but lack of options and name value kept him in the mix. To bad tho I might not have been a fan of his but never wanna see it end with injuries playing a role.

Posts like this have no place in News and Analysis, where this thread was initially started. While I have moved the thread into US Men, you are still expected to post accordingly as long as a thread is in the more strictly moderated forum.

Additionally, we've got a thread for Gooch's club career over in Yanks Abroad.

Sorry, but News and Analysis isn't for drive-by snark like "He doesn't have a thread because he sucks." Thanks for following forum rules in the future.

Onyewu when first started his career was a player that was unstoppable, his play got him a move to Milan. Ever since going to Milan, he has been injured a lot, he hasn't been the player he was and Milan released him. I thought he had a great season but he still hasn't completly recovered from his injury.

Injuries often are more debilitating to big guys. Gooch had some potential, but that first knee injury that torpeoded his start at AC Milan was pretty much the beginning of the end. He's never been the same sense and a loss of mobility for a guy who was never very mobile in the first place is a big problem.

Yeah it's a shame because he is still a force when it comes to corners and just balls in the air in general.

    Overrated? No.

BEFORE his knee injury, the one he sustained vs. Costa Rica at RFK, Gooch was the best US CB; from 2007 to 2009. As far as him making it in the Belgian league he actually did quite well there, played on a talented Standard Liege side.

NOW he lacks lateral mobility due to all the injuries. Unfortunately I think his international career is close to the end. And his poor performances with the US are more than just lack of form. Gooch has served the USMNT well, there's no need to bash a guy personally. You could say he's been crap with the US lately and you don't want him called up again but most fans already know that.

Fair enough I didn't feel like going into depth about it at the time but I've never been a fan of his even pre injury. He is a nothing more than a long ball cb and I like the cb to be able to play out of the back and adapt to the game. Yes per injury he was one of our best but that says more about our player pool at cb. it was a shame tho that injuries ruined his career I never like seing that happen to a player.
