Now that it is OFFICIAL! https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/swit...ri-joins-chicago-fire-fc-as-designated-player We can have this thread. Let the bitching begin! Who will be the first to say: "Bench him" when he fails to score in five games? "That Brian Gutierrez kid is better." Obligatory video: https://www.chicagofirefc.com/video...lights-a-sampling-of-shaqiri-s-finest-moments
Seriously, I am "stoked" about this signing. I'd be "lyon" if I wasn't. I am in the "pool" for the Fire now that we have Shaqiri. I am "Inter"ested in what he brings to the team. With that wand of a left foot, he is going to bring the B--M to the Fire. This is a legit "major splash by acquiring Switzerland national team midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri from Ligue 1’s Lyon as their most expensive transfer signing", as the article states.
Took too blasted long for this thread to appear. We need a good dose of Swiss industrious (or pharmaceuticals) around here!
sorry To be perfectly honest, I saw the announcement on my phone as I had updates to my laptop and it went into "auto update and restart" mode for quite a while. Oh, and I had lunch. I suck at this.
Well, come on, we haven't see him shoot yet. I pretty sure that one shot by Barrett (where he ran about 70 yards towards Section 8 and skied his shot...*) is still taking down Amazon satellites 13 years later. It was an early piece of space junk. *...as opposed to all of the other shots Barrett skied in his Fire career.
Pffft! Not even one goal or assist per 2 games. Sure, he has played in three consecutive World Cups and the past two Euro, but how many has he WON? -Zero!
Woohoo! Glad we didn’t have to wait another 10 years (like we did between Blanco and Schweinsteiger) to see a top player suit up for the Chicago Fire. Excited to see him add to his highlight reel goal collection.
Will there be fireworks? I hope not to relive the second coming of Nery Castillo. I am more excited for the season to start now. The Fire still needs to fill out the roster so a lot of work still to be done.
Agreed, though I'd say that Friedrich (2012-2013) was a top player (two World Cups with Germany) between them.
I mean, it looks like a no contest. Okay, actually, I compared their On-Off stats to eachother. As we all know very well, Collier had a +0.90 last season. Shaqiri does have a +1.12 this season with Lyon, but if you look at his past 4 seasons, he only gets close once. In fact, he had a worse On-Off than anyone on the Fire this past season (please forget that Collier had a -1.69 in 2020) I gotta say, cherry-picking to find a reason Collier is better is pretty hard. Which I guess says good things? I can find at least 5 easy reasons why Collier's better than Beric, so I guess that's something I said.
