Former Serbian Under-21 international defender Petkovic was confirmed by Sky Blues CEO Tony Pignata as the likely option to fill the gap, pending permission from Football Federation Australia and the issuing of a short-term visa.

"There is a little bit of red tape to get past yet and it's a short-term deal which will run for around 16 weeks," said Pignata. "We are keen to get this across the line and he should be with us until January time if things go well."

Petkovic's gain comes from Antonis' pain, with the quad injury the gifted midfielder suffered playing for the Young Socceroos in the build-up U-20 FIFA World Cup now likely to keep him out until Christmas in the latest setback for the 20-year-old.

Pignata feels for Antonis, explaining: "It's been a tough year for Terry. He missed the Under-20 World Cup in June because of the injury, then the deal to Parma fell through and now this.

Petkovic is much travelled, with his list of clubs including Turkish Super Lig with Genclerbirligi, fellow Turkish outfit Hacettepe SK (loan), Eintracht Frankfurt, Russia's FC Tom Tomsk (loan) and Israel's Hapoel Tel Aviv (loan). There were also two brief stints with Saudi Arabia's Al-Ahli.

The 27 tear-old can operate either as a left back or as a stopper and made 23 appearances in his second spell for Red Star after initially being loaned to the club back in 2008.

Sky Blues coach Frank Farina on Wednesday unveiled Del Piero as his side's new skipper, replacing foundation player Terry McFlynn after three seasons at the helm.

Del Piero held the vice-captaincy with Brett Emerton last season, donning the armband when McFlynn did not play or was substituted off.

The 38-year-old Italian attacker scored 14 goals in 23 games for Sydney FC - the most since his 2007-2008 season with Juventus, when he scored 21.

“This is a great honour for me to be given the captaincy of one of Australia and Asia’s biggest clubs,” Del Piero said.

“It’s a very proud moment for me and I will give everything to help the club win the A-League Championship this season."

Hmmm- not too long I hope.

But with the beautiful game comes a brutal transition, and no one should expect the Sky Blues to be knocking goals in for fun overnight.

"We're playing a different system," said Emerton.

"I think the understanding is there, but it takes time.

"We're encouraging more of a passing game, that's what we enjoy doing, and I think it's what the fans enjoy watching."

Bah- injury news for game 1:

Sydney FC have been dealt a major blow for Friday night's season-opening clash against Newcastle at Allianz Stadium with marquee star Brett Emerton almost certainly out with a back injury. “It's an ongoing problem with Emo and we thought his back had settled down pretty quickly but we'll see tomorrow [Thursday] how he wakes up,” Farina said. “He was just running along and I saw him seize up, so I stopped the session. An hour later he was better but we probably won't know until tomorrow.”

The club will be without Terry Antonis and Peter Triantis for some time as the young pair have missed most of the pre-season with injury. Triantis is battling osteitis pubis and Antonis is overcoming a torn thigh muscle. “Rest is the only solution for Peter and we're still waiting on Terry to get himself right,” Farina said. He also declared captain Terry McFlynn's groin injury as a “four-weeker” despite hope around the club that he would return sooner.

“Pascal has hurt Achilles again but not the same one he's had two operations on. He'll be out for another four-six weeks,” Farina said. “He's had a tough time after two Achilles operations in 10 months. Both he and us have done everything right but then this comes up. I think his body is screaming out a bit, actually. One injury has followed another, so we've got to be extra careful.” Former Melbourne Heart utility Matthew Thompson will be drafted in on a short-term contract and should be cleared to play by Friday night.

New striker Corey Gameiro will miss at least six weeks after an injury that Farina describes “freakishly unlucky” – slipping while reaching for a ball during a promotional shoot for Fox Sports. Brazilian defender Tiago Calvano is also fighting to overcome a minor strain, with Farina confirming he was facing an uphill battle to play against the Jets. “It was quite incredible, really. We were travelling along quite well and then in the space of 10 days, we were hit by a raft of injuries,” he said. “There's just nothing you can do about it and the timing is very unfortunate.”

Fringe pair Blake Powell and Daniel Petkovski have been allowed to join the club's youth team for a tournament in Vietnam to lift their match fitness while Yairu Yau is on international duty with Panama.

On the plus side, goalkeeper Vedran Janjetovic is fully fit, likewise defenders Rhyan Grant and Pedj Bojic. Nicky Carle has also been given the green light to play.

hey guys I have a question for you here.. I hardly know anything about the A-League, but I'm due to visit my brother in Melboune this winter - late Jan/early Feb and want to attend a game.. I noticed during that time there will be two games on in Melbourne, both plaing Syndeny FC... the first is Melbourne Victory vs. Sydney FC on Sun Jan 26, the next is Mebourne Heart vs. Syndey FC on Friday 31 Jan... which of these games do you think will be better? Victory or Heart? Again I don't know much about the A-Leauge but was leaning more towards the Victory game. Thanks!

I'd do the Victory game, personally.. The Heart aren't very well supported, so while they'll get a bump from a visit from a team from their city's rival city, the attendance at the Heart game will probably be about half as large as the Victory game.

Frank's losing it.

On Tuesday he updated his blog for the first time in four months to call out his online critics. It shows a thin skin and a total loss of perspective and only alienates fans more.

Also, it became news, which meant the club had to fight the fire with ADP.

Note that his post came shortly after Barlow publicly gave him his 100% support, always the beginning of the end.
