I don't know the full details of how the league handles GAM. IIRC, it used to have a shelf life of 3 years
Still sitting with the league office awaiting approval. All done between player and the #LAGalaxy. MLS is taking its time I am told. https://t.co/QnQ46emWjK— Manuel Veth (@ManuelVeth) August 14, 2024 wut
Or maybe LAFC snagged Griezmann too and the league is too busy oodling over it to have any time for Reus.
ESPN is reporting it, so when they decide to mention MLS and its on the front page, you know its done, to be announced Thursday. https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/40767862/la-galaxy-signs-borussia-dortmund-germany-marco-reus
More confirmation A source has confirmed to me that former Borussia Dortmund midfielder Marco Reus has signed with the LA Galaxyhttps://t.co/PFiWZ49Ua6— Cesar Hernandez (@cesarhfutbol) August 15, 2024
I'm sure Marco is sitting there wondering wtf is going on that the league can hold such control over team-player contracts
2.5 years From Dortmund to the City of Angels 💫We have signed Marco Reus to a two-and-a-half-year contract through the end of the 2026 MLS season. 📰: https://t.co/R9UjTA0eGq | @kinecta pic.twitter.com/AUF1DvKA5E— LA Galaxy (@LAGalaxy) August 15, 2024 His next adventure begins 💙🤍💛 pic.twitter.com/FwJKupSY56— LA Galaxy (@LAGalaxy) August 15, 2024
for a player of his age and experience I expected 1.5 maybe, but 2.5 (esp considering contracts he might be used to, as we often got players like Zlatan and Ashley Cole in their first year on lower contracts that got bumped later)? Galaxy are really ambitious with this. Maybe the GAM from the Araujo sale is the late deciding factor on this, hence why the league took a while, to approve the adjustments to the contract?
Sweet. So my question now is who gets the bench and who gets the start in the midfield? Is he Riqui's super sub would be question 2?
That's my 1 of 2 concerns 1: Marco's injury history 2: Fitting him in, in an already crowded attack with chemistry that is already building.
The Charlotte deal for Reus' rights obviously was contingent on him signing, so that is now official today too We have acquired $400,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) from the LA Galaxy. pic.twitter.com/3E4dvUley6— Charlotte FC (@CharlotteFC) August 15, 2024
lmfaooooooo I think I heard it on CoTG, but he brought up that the price of discovery rights could be renegotiated last minute by Charlotte (in his "deals not done until its done" spiel) He wasn't wrong (I think it was 350k initially, 400k now)
Figure he will get Diego's minutes mainly and then can be a general sub for Pec, Joe, and Puigee either mid game or as spot starter. Wonder if he might take away some minutes from Gaston, Mark, and Edwin as well if game conditions dictate it. Guess what I am saying is I don't know...lol
MLS announced which teams selected the DP model and which selected the U22 model based on the mid-season changes they announced. No surprise the Galaxy chose the DP model since we have 3 DPs, but interesting who is going the U22 route (Inter Miami and LAFC?) MLS Clubs have officially declared the roster construction model they'll use for the rest of 2024. 19 teams go with the Designated Player model (3 DPs + 3 U22), 10 go with the U22 Initiative Player model (2 DPs + 4 U22 + $1M GAM). pic.twitter.com/ElqHIvIKvh— Ben Wright (@benwright) August 15, 2024
Busch league to roll this out mid season. We had no way of choosing the other option if we wanted to because we were following the existing rules at the start of the season. Stupid.
The more I think about it the more I think he will be primarily a sub. We need two midfielders who play some defense - that will be mainly Cerrillo at DM and Delgado/Gaston as 2-way mids. That leaves 3 mid spots to work with. Pec and Puig will always start: the former because he is one of our top 2 players, the latter because he is the other top 2 player and he will cry if he doesn’t start. That leaves Paintsil. I could see Greg occasionally starting Reus over Paintsil, but I think he will mostly start the 3 P’s plus Delgado and Cerrillo. Si Reus as a 35yo will come in primarily as a 60th min or 46th min sub. It will be interesting when we get to high-stakes games. Will Greg feel compelled to start superstar-but-aging Reus in the playoffs, for example?
I think some of this may depend upon Jovelic's health. He's been out for a long time and who knows when he will be playing again, let alone starting and playing significant minutes. Paintsil at striker opens up more options for the various parts.
Bibout loaned out to USL Championship side FC Tulsa We have loaned forward Aaron Bibout to USL Championship side FC Tulsa for the remainder of the 2024 season.📰: https://t.co/MXJSJxDQ3q | @kinecta pic.twitter.com/VMDg3dXZlh— LA Galaxy (@LAGalaxy) August 15, 2024 This explains the recent moves by VCFC to acquire a few older forwards on loan. Maybe the Galaxy wanted him to get time at a higher level of competition, especially with the season winding down.
A Bit of clarity from Corner of the Galaxy. The entire first part of the podcast, Will Kuntz calls in and Josh and Eric got to field him questions regarding Marco, Johnny, Bibout, even the money from the Julian deal, and "I'm glad I'm not Greg right now" lol Even more important, Greg Vanney used the "100" emoji
