    Rapids Announce 2004 TV Schedule

Team to Show Ten Games on Fox Sports Net in Sixth Year of Partnership Beginning With the 2004 Season Opener This Saturday, April 3rd at 6:30 p.m. (MT) Against Scott Garlick and the Dallas Burn Live From the Cotton Bowl; Total of 21 of the Rapids 2004 Regular Season Games to be Available via Various TV Outlets

DENVER, CO (03-31-04)- The Colorado Rapids and broadcast leader Fox Sports Net announced today their partnership for 2004 that will bring Colorado area soccer fans all the action from 10 regular season games. The Rapids, in their sixth consecutive season on FSN, kick off their 10-game TV schedule this Saturday, April 3rd with the club's 2004 Season Opener against the Dallas Burn at 6:30 p.m. (MT) live from the Cotton Bowl. One of the highlights of the programming will be the Rapids' match against 14-year old soccer phenom Freddy Adu and D.C. United on Saturday, June 12 at 5:30 p.m. live from RFK Stadium.

"We are very excited to be able to continue our partnership with such a recognized media outlet," Colorado Rapids Governor Charlie Wright said. "With Fox Sports Net on board, we will be able to bring once again Rapids action to Colorado soccer fans that cannot attend our games at INVESCO Field at Mile High, as well as some of the team's away matches."

Rapids games will be regionally televised through Fox Sports Net to over 2.8 million cable and satellite subscribers in an eight state radius (Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, southern Idaho, western Kansas, western Nebraska and northeastern Nevada), bringing the game of soccer to American households in an unprecedented way. FNS will air a live edition of the Rocky Mountain Sports Report that will include extensive postgame coverage of the Rapids games immediately following the matches.

Another 11 Rapids games will also be available for Colorado fans through either HDNet (three games), on national television via ESPN2 (two games), via Fox Sports World/ Fox Sports World Español (one game) or through the MLS Direct Kick package (five games). HDNet has only announced their MLS programming for the first half of the season.

Featuring the colorful and dynamic broadcast duo of Marc Stout and Tom Stone, the Rapids will hit the airwaves with an experienced and knowledgeable team. Stout, an on-air Denver radio personality for 106.7 FM KBPI's "The Lockerroom," has been an announcer with the Rapids for seven years.

Next to him in the TV booth will be Tom Stone, former Atlanta Beat Head Coach and Colorado Rapids announcer from 1996-2000, who will bring a wealth of soccer knowledge to the Rapids broadcast. Stone and Stout have already been paired calling soccer in the TV booth as they called soccer games on CSTV last fall.

Great stuff, thanks for the official word.

Does anyone know if MLS Direct Kick will pick up the HDNet games as well?

    Cheers,

There are 10 games (4 home/6 away) this season with no TV coverage by either team. They are:

    May 1st @ KC
    May 29th @ Chicago
    June 9th KC *
    June 26th @ Columbus
    Aug 28th @ San Jose
    Sept 4th Dallas **
    Sept 11th KC
    Sept 25th @ KC
    Oct 2nd SJ
    Oct 9th @ Chicago

    * This game is scheduled for HDNet. If either KC or Colorado could decide to pay to convert it to a non-HD signal to put it on the air somewhere

** Dallas has not announced it's TV schedule yet

Last year they only picked them up on the package if one of the teams had paid to transmit the signal on a non HDNet frequency (FSW paid for it once as well I think). This only effects one Rapids game, the June 9th game against KC.

Actually, they would likely have to send their own cameras and production crews for the game. HDnet prefers to keep its HD productions exclusive to itself and was not entirely happy when FSW downconverted their telecasts for the FSW game of the week a few times last season.

For the games that are carried on both HDnet and a regular TV station, there are two crews at the game. One of them works for HDnet and has HD equipment. The other has standard definition equipment.

So if Kansas City or Colorado wanted to get that game televised, they'd have to do it like any other game and wouldn't be able to do it "on the cheap" by borrowing HDnet's production.

Which is to say that you probably ought to start looking for a place that gets HDnet and start making plans to tip the bartenders heavily to put a soccer game on. Or you can hope that the Rapids throw together some sort of watching party.
It's at 3rdDegree.net. Five games on Fox Sports Net Southwest, four games on KFWD. The September 4 Dallas-Colorado game will have no TV.

So now that the Rapids have made an official announcement about TV and there are road games being shown, is anyone going to eat crow and admit they were wrong?

Stout's one of the best in the league. He's a big reason why I buy the Shootout (or whatever it's called) package.

Are you sure you don't mean Stone.

Stout really isn't that good. A talker that likes to hear himself talk (at least last season).
