Newcastle Jets are believed to be back in the hands of coal baron Nathan Tinkler following face-to-face talks with Football Federation Australia chairman Frank Lowy.
Almost three weeks after Tinkler stunned the A-League by announcing his intention to hand back the licence, and after a protracted war-of-words between the Hunter Sports Group and the FFA, it took a couple of days of intense talks between the two billionaires at the start of this week to resolve the future of the Jets. A formal announcement is expected shortly.

FFA, Newcastle Jets, Jason Culina and PFA Reach Settlement

MEDIA RELEASE

MELBOURNE: 6 June 2012

Football Federation Australia (FFA), Newcastle Jets and Jason Culina have agreed to settle their long-running grievance, Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) Chief Executive Brendan Schwab announced today.

As a result, the scheduled June hearings of the National Dispute Resolution Chamber under the A-League Collective Bargaining Agreement will not proceed.

“The PFA is pleased that FFA, Newcastle Jets and Jason have reached a settlement by mutual agreement, the commercial terms of which are confidential,” Schwab said. “As a result, Jason’s employment agreement with the Jets has also been terminated and he is free to continue his playing career elsewhere in the A-League.

“I would like to congratulate Jason on the determination and professionalism he has shown throughout the course of the dispute. At all times, he has remained focussed on his rehabilitation and ensuring he is able to return to elite level professional football as soon as possible,” Schwab added.

FFA CEO Ben Buckley has praised Culina on his professional career and hopes to see him back playing again in the Hyundai A-League, “Jason Culina is a world class athlete who has represented Australia at two World Cups and in over 50 national team matches,” said Mr Buckley.

“Personally I hope Jason can return to full fitness and resume his impressive playing career in the Hyundai A-League.”

Culina said he was pleased he was now able to put the matter behind him, and focus on securing his professional future within the A-League.

“I look forward to resuming my playing career as soon as I have completed my rehabilitation, which is proceeding very well,” Culina said.

“I would like to acknowledge the efforts of FFA and the Newcastle Jets to achieve a settlement and to avoid further legal proceedings. I would also like to thank the PFA for the support it has shown me throughout especially Chief Executive Brendan Schwab and Player Advocacy Manager Laura Sigal,” he added.

Ex-England striker Emile Heskey is close to agreeing terms on a one-year deal worth around $1.3 million to join Newcastle Jets and end a frustrating search for a new club.

The contract has the option for two more years – at $1.3 million for each extra season – which would be triggered should the 34-year-old produce the goods on the Hunter as the club's latest marquee.
Heskey, who was released by Aston Villa, met with Jets CEO Robbie Middleby and Troy Palmer, CEO of the Hunter Sports Group, in the UK over the weekend to go over the finer points of an offer.
After initial trepidation, the former Liverpool forward has embraced the idea of completing his career in Australia where he would be in line for a head-to-head battle with Italian legend Alessandro del Piero in the round two A-League clash at Allianz Stadium.

That was quick.

The tax office has moved to wind up the Newcastle Knights and the Newcastle Jets, along with their parent company the Hunter Sports Group, over unpaid debts of a combined $2.7 million, as owner Nathan Tinkler’s debt problems continue to mount.

Documents filed on Wednesday in the Federal Court in Sydney show the Deputy Commmissioner of Taxation is applying for the wind up of Hunter Sports Group (owing $184,258), Newcastle Jets Pty Ltd (owing $1.063 million) and Newcastle Knights Pty Ltd (owing $1.424 million).
The applications have been set down for hearing on February 20.

Knights will be fine, at least in the short term. They have a $20m bank guarantee covering them.

Jets is a different story. Hard to see too many other people interested in taking them over.

What happened to that Andrew Poole who was interested last time when Tinkler was playing bluff with the FFA? Is he still around?

He is, but he's not the sort of guy who would really swoop in and fund the club wholesale like Tinkler did. He's only worth about $10m or so.

He might be interested in some involvement, but I think he would probably be more interested in helping revive the Knights (which has always been his passion). He's not really a soccer fan.

If you watch the game between NJ and Adelaide United that NJ lost 7-0, you can see some players collectively lost discipline. It is a sign that they would not play for the coach. Madaschi was substituted before half-time. Ben Kennedy was one putting in a decent performance, though.

I think Tinkler is trying to force the FFA to take over so he can take them to court and try to get his $5 million back.

Even if I'm proven wrong and he is trying to rebuild the Jets, I question whether it is the right choice to base the rebuilding of the Jets around Stubbins.

Tink's is almost out....... again:

NEWCASTLE Jets owner Nathan Tinkler has revealed he has put the financially embattled A-League club into voluntary administration with debts of $2.7 million.

Tinkler says Scottish club Dundee United is ready to step in and buy the Jets for just under $5 million with a sale imminent. But he claims the FFA may attempt to step in and take back the licence before any sale proceeds.
