Surface will go down in February, making it ready for CCL in early March, 2012.
Yay! The current turf is horrible. Portland and New England both have newer versions of FieldTurf and they play much better than ours ever did. However, neither one power washes their fields as much as we do and that is bound to impact how the turf stands up.
I think the good thing about this is that it will be after the NFL season. This means that we'll be the first ones to use it.
I know I am one of the biggest grass proponents on here but I'll take it
Anything is better.
Will it have time to take root?
I think it only takes a couple hours to take root. It is very fast growing. Well, initially, but as soon as it reaches a certain height it stops growing, never needs to be mowed, rarely needs to be watered, stays green forever, and only needs to have some antibiotic spray periodically.
If through-balls actually slow down before being chased over the end line I think it will be an improvement.
Is the Cascadia Cup made out of plastic? You guys sure seem to love that field turf. I know there really isn't anything you can do about it so I'll be nice. However, as a fan of a visiting team, I hope you get a chance to watch the beautiful game someday.
It is what it is.
Even if seattle was gonna install grass it won' t be until after UW Husky stadium is done.
I don't know, Its usually a pretty beautiful game when the Sounders play Clownbus.

Yes but if the goal is to simply beat the other team, you could do it on concrete. After a few more years of fast rolling through balls and high bouncing punts you will come to realize there is more to division 1 soccer than simply "winning". Ask Toronto. Of course they're still working on the winning part.
I thought the grass at HDC for the MLS Cup Final made that game complete shit... I was under the impression people hated the grass at BMO. Watching CCL quarters at columbus last year was no picnic.
Whereas you watch the way turf held up at Jeld Wen, even with heavy rain, it played as well as any grass field in the same weather.
Our turf last year was just the worst of the worst.
Yet the Sounders played some of the best possession Soccer in the league last year.
Baby steps. We figured we'd start with you dipshits first.

As for the thread topic, congrats to Seattle for upgrading the turf. It's not grass, but we in Toronto know what it's like to have the crappy old stuff, so this new pitch should help your team play even better next season (which is a scary thought).
Division 1 soccer eh? I think you need to try back when you have proper sponsorship and sell out that concrete can you call a stadium.
So anyway (if all the trolling is done here?) back to the topic. Joshua Meyers is today reporting that the plan is a Feb 25 completion for the new surface install:
Trolling is never finished, alas. We've got a quota to meet here:
But good to hear. Hope they post pictures of the progress.
That does not leave much time between completion and the first match.
It's not like it needs time for the roots to set.
whats the turf brand?
Yes I realize that but they still need to make sure that everything is installed properly and that there are no issues. It's not like they will just roll the stuff out and say okay we are done. They will need to test and make sure the install is good.
FieldTurf. Not sure which model though, but probably the latest and greatest that the Timbers have.
I'd imagine that is part of the install process that will be completed by Feb 25. Feb 25 is most likely the "Go Live" date.
