Just saw JFDR. Icelandic singer/songwriter Jófríður Ákadóttir and her husband. Just terrific music. Guitar (played by her), programming (by her husband) and her voice. All that was needed
Last time I was here I was drinking and BS'ing with Mojo Nixon at the bar before his set... Foggy list of shows at this venue... starting 1985? Black Flag... RHCP, Sun Ra, FireHose, Fetchin Bones, Widespread, Janes Addiction, Pylon, SCOTS, Chickasaw Mudpuppies, Follow for Now, Hillbilly Frankenstein, Blind Melon, 311, Five 8, Fishbone, ColBruceHampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit, Man or Astroman, Weezer, Melvins...and Mojo_MF_Nixon! So many more that aren't coming to mind now
Fun part about recalling all those bitchin' bands of that time, reflecting on ones I haven't thought about in decades - Five-Eight - What great band...such authenticity and passion...."somewhere between Husker Du and Neil Young" If you don't know them and dig "dark and joyous" punk, I encourage you to check them out. If ya made it that far are want to go down the rabbit hole...
OK, he's not really a musician himself but has massive music connections and pedigree. And is one of the best examples of Homo Sapien still walking the Earth. https://www.berkeleyside.org/2026/05/12/wavy-gravy-90th-birthday Huge respect for decades of work creating and growing the Seva Institute.
Just bought tickets to the John Prine 80th Birthday Celebration. Souvenirs: 80 Years of John Prine Tribute Concert to Feature Performances by Joy Oladokun, Margo Price, Steve Earle, Josh Ritter and More.
Some more music that my students have and will ignore. It's not fully prepped yet, but I'm gonna have a Juneteenth week with some blues to be named later and then the last week of pride has its artists picked out, but no songs. Working on that.
A "Chicago" week without the Effigies or Big Black?!? Sad I hope the kids appreciate the coordination you put into it.
The "Chicago Week" was for my birthday, so it's just songs that make me think of home. And one named after Saul Alinsky, And no, they don't even notice most of the time unless it's something they know. Which a few did know the djo song because it was a meme last year. Honestly, the music coordination is just for me at this point because I find it fun to have themed music.
