This thread is for people that still don't understand that All-Star games are popularity contests and for the most part have nothing to do with how well or bad a player is doing. So complain away
I'm not going to complain when any kind of MLS match draws around 30,000 and is aired on network tv. Its just an opportunity to make money.
Judging from the Starting lineups for this year's match, It looks to me like it isn't as much a popularity contest as you say it is usagoal
The All-Star game is great. It's like a bye week for me so that I can get some housework done or go out and hang with friends.
For me it's an excuse to dance around the house in women's underwear reapeating "I do dis, dis, dis, dis...Gol!" and "Hatch, we can do it, we can win!"
I'd look again. Of the 22 starters, 9 play for a team either in second to last or just plain last place in their conference. San Jose gets 5 players in when they are in last place in the West and are tied with Chicago for the 2nd worst overall record in MLS. Kansas City has the 2nd best overall record in MLS as well as a MVP of the Month and has zero starters. Joe Cannon is the better keeper than Pat Onstad so far this season. Onstead has one shutout, Cannon 4. Onstead has a 1.58 GAA, Cannon 0.86. Onstead has 3 wins, Cannon 5. Onstead has saved 74% of the shots on him, Cannon 84%. San Jose is in last place in the division and almost last place in the entire league, the Rapids third in the division and entire league. Now you could reply with "The Rapids have a better back line than the Quakes". If that's true then why is Defender Jeff Agoos an All-Star too? And the team that I think is at the mid-point of the season the best team in MLS, the LA Galaxy, only have 3 starters. Now it could turn out that the 5 starter SJ has are going to be the only reps from their team in the AS game. LA could get a reserve or two. KC could get 3 reserves. All I'm saying is that yes, this is a popularity contest even looking at this years lineup.
My wife loves the All-Star weekend as it's the only weekend all summer that there are no games I wanna watch so I can plan my weekend around what she wants for a change.
I'll watch, but 18 out of 55 starters in each conference going head to head, 33% of all starters on the team, not much of an all-star game, is it. Saying you are better than two other starters ain't much.
Personally, I am all for the MLS making money and everything. I do not think that the All-Star game is really necessary. I think that mostly it was instituted because the people that run mls thought that us Americans must've wanted an all star game like most of our other pro leagues! As I said before, i think it's not necessary and really is a waste of time, I mean don't we already have discussions on these boards about how the regular season games are really not that meaningful?! So, how meaningful is an all-star game in the middle of the season? I will probably watch some of it, that's if there is nothing else to do that day and I would have to say that i am the furthest thing from an Eurosnob that there is. I'm for the Crew and MLS but come on, GET RID OF THE ALL-STAR GAME!!
I can't believe I'm agreeing with a Metros fan, but I have to. I'll be watching, even though some of the starters selected were less deserving than those who weren't selected.
