I babelfished it. And it says something about a "returns to loan." That's how it translated. So I think it may be a loan.

    Ariel G. to emelec

    Can someone babelfish the article?

And in fairness, Graziani has been to Emelec before, on off-season loans while he was with the Burn.

So is this another loan move, á lá Brian McBride with Everton-- or is he actually gone?

    Cheers,
    William

You beat me to it, Erin. Plus, you also used "babelfish" as a verb.

Sounds like another loan spell to me, too. But it remains to be seen what happens when the training camps open.

    Cheers,
    William

Which would mean he's already in Ecuador. Judging by the time on the article.

It probably (as was mentioned) is like the McBride deal...it would sure suck if he left and the Quakes got nothing out of it, but that wouldn't be the case. Doesn't MLS own his contract? They wouldn't let that happen...well maybe...but probably not (unless they could get $500 k for it...)

MLS owns his contract so if he is sold the Quakes would get an allocation.

Which is about the best we can expect for him at this point. It looks like the other option is waiving him, getting nothing in return. There seems to be zero interest in him from other MLS teams, at least those with the salary cap space necessary to take him.

At least then FY can find a foreign allocation to replace him (seems unlikely to find one to fit under the cap, no?) or trade the allocation to another MLS team for a player. For example, rumors are that Dallas was willing to give up Vaca for NY's allocation and Andy Williams.

    Graz on loan

The article said that Graziani is being loaned to Emelec for their 2003 season and the Copa Libertadores. He has not been sold. I don't know anything about the Ecuadoran league so I don't know when it starts or ends.

If it's anything like any of the other Central American or Latin American leagues, they're probably on break right now and resuming their season in a matter of weeks.

There seems to be a lot of misunderstanding here. Here are the facts:

    1. Graziani is on loan to Emelec.
    2. Although I don't know how long the loan lasts, I assume that since he is owned by SJ, they will get him back whenever they want to. The Ecuadorian championship lasts until May.
    3. He will also play in the early round games for the Copa Libertadores.
    4. He has played on Emelec several times before, both on loan and before joining MLS. In fact, it was his play on Emelec that led to him gaining Ecuadorian citizenship and launched his international career, which eventually led to his career in MLS.

here's a link, in english, from another thread about harkes and stewart. graz is mentioned at the bottom.

here's a summary: Graz was loaned out and the story says that if things go well it could turn into a permanent move. quakes would get an allocation. I wouldn't be too broken hearted to let him go and take the allocation, either.

I can't imagine that MLS would get much if any money from a Ecuadorian team. This would probaby turn out to be a small allocation, like the kind that got us DoRo.

An allocation? To the Quakes? Doubt it.

To bad we can't trade Graziani for Earnie Stewart.

All of this is, of course, only the prelude to the soon-to-be greatest event in the history of San Jose: the Allocation of Yves.

Please.....ever hear the saying, "A bird in the hand"? Graziani is the most productive Striker we've had since Cerritos:"The Early Years". Maybe Giovanni Savareese will come back.....or Agogo....or Conteh. :D

    Fabio Edelwein, maybe?
He's Brazilian, and he is old enough to occupy SI spot in the roster.

    Re: Ariel G. to emelec

    Apparently, not confirmed.

Today's Merc clarifies that Ariel is likely to be loaned to Barcelona of Ecuador, not his old team Emelec, AND that it's potentially for good (nothing definite, but acknowledges Johnny Moore is trying to dump some salary).

    http://www.bayarea.com/mld/mercurynews/sports/4890353.htm

Folks, I'm gonna go ahead and slightly rename this thread to better reflect the generality of the topic, so we don't have to create a new thread for each team Ariel is allegedly signing with...
