There was a lot of shots...just not on net. The game and turnout was a lot better than I expected. Nice to see a win and the Capital Cup is pretty money.
I'm sure it's happened many times in much the way as tonight. I just can't think of a match off hand. DC makes history again!
You've got to be kidding me. No shots on goal???? In an exhibition? Now I'm sort of glad I didn't go.
Some of the DC shots were sorta close, according to matchtracker. It was a defensive show unmatched in recent history!
Maybe no shots on goal, but Convey and Hristo put some wicked shots, at least one into the side netting that looked like shots on goal, at least. Bobby played a great and entertaining game, with some great runs and instances where he took on players going to goal from the central midfield. Tottenham played Keller, Ziege, Sherringham, Keane, and other first teamers for much of the game and DC's defense largely shut them down. Stoitchkov, Olsen, and Kovalenko didn't play like it was a friendly, but neither did Ziege. I don't know what the attendance was, but I would guess it was more than 12,000. A fitting tribute to Harkes before the game. He was on the field with the team and his wife and kids. They gave him a silver DC United ticket good for admission for his family for life and a framed original jersey. Zack, Payne, Arena and a guy from Adidas spoke. They showed a video of his best moments at DC and unveiled a banner for DC players with a heading commitment to excellence (or something like that) with John Harkes 1996-98 on it. Harkes spoke to the crowd after the game. It was a very well done job. Harkes even played decently in the defensive midfield, but seemed to be cramping or wearing out aroound 60 minutes and signaled the bench to be subbed out. He left the field to warm applause and returned the captain's arm band to Marco.
Well, so much for the theory that this might be a match to help build the confidence of our attackers. Geez!
"Glad I Didn't Go"??? Sheesh . . . what's with all the no-shows dogging the game? Just got back from the stadium, and I gotta say I had a blast. Great crowd, and DC United -- especially Bobby Convey -- showed some really great attacking stuff tonight. Convey was sprung through the middle by I think it was Quaranta on a quick counter attack (yeah -- how many of those have we been witness to this season?) and only a desperately sliding Tottenham defender kept him from pounding it into Keller's goal. Poor finishing, but great, attack-minded stuff from the youngsters. Kovalenko, Convey, Tino, Hristo, and Olsen played their hearts out tonight, with the latter four only coming out of the game because of the KC match coming up this Saturday. Heck, I'm glad I went. I'll even take the gloomy Chicago match over some crappy online match-tracker -- any day of the week.
Re: "Glad I Didn't Go"??? Since apparently I'm "all the no-shows" (didn't catch it on MatchTracker either), I was planning on going, but usually, your team not having any shots on goal doesn't lead to an exciting game. I'm glad you had a good time.

It was also fun having the Spurs fans around. There was a guy in Section 206 standing up and exhorting the Spurs fans. When they didn't perform to his liking he took pains to point out two fans in Arsenal shirts that were doing a better job supporting the Spurs than some of the folks with Spurs shirts as he cried out "what a waste of space" when commenting on his fellow Spurs fans. "Come on you Spurs" seemed to be their chant of choice. It was a nice night out and was nothing like the dreary 0-0 tie with Chicago. It was also the first game I've seen Ivanov play. He looked pretty smooth. A couple of times he let a player get by out by the side line, but not too badly. He is a stronger defender than Prideaux. But Nelson was a rock tonight. He looked great. DC players were switching all over the place. Olsen moved from side to side. Stoitchkov was playing all over, even along the defensive back line. It reminded me of how Hudson had Miami playing. All in all it was an interesting game. At times Convey and Quaranta showed great promise. And any game against an English team brings a different buzz and some great fans out.

It was an entertaining game. Hristo took a shot from about 5 yards out, a defender block the shot about three feet from the line (with Keller clearly beaten), the deflection caused the ball to trickle into the other side of the goal. Ivanov looks like a stud. He is a very smooth defender and is not afraid to venture upfield with the ball. I think with him in defense DC United will be in good hands. Harkes also spoke after the game. Tottenham has a decent team and watching Keller Sheringham, Keane, Ziede, etc. playing was worth it. ps-The Capital Cup is a huge trophy!
