    THAT'S WHY HE'S HERE!

(ugh, I'd rather listen to fingernails scratching a blackboard than Jack Edwards)

the midfield was crap. they held the ball decently, but it was like they were moving the ball through honey. they were SO slow transitioning. they carry the ball through slowly, play several useless square balls and NEVER send a decent searching ball forward. watching them knock the ball around the middle is mildly entertaining, but they'll never score. I'm not sure if the strikers are any good because they were never put in a dangerous place. the only player on the field that makes dangerous passes is pope when he steps up (see both goals at S.J.).

and i don't get the lassiter move either. he's old, he's crap. if you want to bring in a speedy sub, at least give Curtis a shot. at minimum, he's fast.

crap performance, giving away a goal in extra time. DC sucks!

p.s.--Mathis does look like a porn star. I think he's trying to copy Beckham's look (mohawk, limited, strange facial hair) but adding a little too much GA backwoods to it.

A missed sitter off a chest deflection from Pope that Q2 would have buried, Jaime would have hit the post and Lassiter while suprisingly not offsides, can't f'ing run on to it.

The ghosts of Chris Albright and Roy Lassiter for Wegerle deal are rolling over in their graves.

Not to mention getting Olsen as a P-40 player outside of the draft.

Only once did I see Convey drive with the ball into traffic. Clearly he's feeling either the physical or the psychological wounds from his shoulder separation and other hard hits. I hope it's physical and not psychological. Just seems like a longer road back, and some people never recover.
And one must wonder why he was on the field.

One shot on goal - by a defender. That says it all.

Convey looked like crap. The two times I can recall that he dribbled at a player, the ball was easily stripped from him. Also, from where I was sitting with the SE's at the Swamp, I could see in the second half he really had a lot of space on the left that he could have used to make a run up the left. But he rarely did. He either made a safe pass back or to the middle, or he just booted it up the left thinking for some crazy reason that Lassiter would run onto it and do something useful.

Anyway, I'd say based on his performance in this one game, I would not want him back next season. He needs to play much better than that to assure himself of a place on this team.

GDOP, First of all I'd like to say sorry about the tape. My cousin just moved and couldn't find it. Also they got a great shot of you on the tube at the game. I agree with your assesment. Watching the game up at Kilroys with Red & Black and a couple of Barra brothers, we all commented how Convey just disappeared in the second half. Five minutes before Lassiter went in I said to Rob how they should put Curtis in.You should have heard the collective groan when we saw Lassiter on the sideline. That, coupled with Conveys passiveness sealed our day. Sheeesh....

when lassiter came in, i just wanted to pound my head into the bar! it would be less painful than watching him play.

i understand your frustration with Convey yesterday, i too thought it a very bad game for him. i still like him as a player and believe he is a classy player and likely a future fixture in national pool, but he isn't there yet.

the whole midfield was pretty woeful, gotta say sorum called this one (though he does make the same call about the midfield every week) about the midfield play.

I was at the game yesterday, and DC played very well. The metros had their chances, but I felt DC outworked them for 91:30. DC looses the ball and they started walking backfield(convey, marco, roy, etc.) leaving Eddie all alone to take on 3 metros. thankfully someone else got back(couldnt see who it was...metros fans stood up when faria blew down the sidelines) but it was too late. Mathis had already started his run down the side. Rimando almost got it (from my view) but those are the breaks. I hope the boys in Black do better next time.

Hindsight is 20-20. Q2 hadn't produced anything. If Ray had kept him in, these boards would be full of criticism for not trying Lassiter or Curtis or someone.

Not from me. I might have wondered why Roy or Curtis wasn't in there with Q2 but, short of injury, I can't imagine the circumstances that would cause me to b!tch about about Roy staying on the bench.

    Kevin,

I guess we are gonna be on different sides of the fence on this issue..

First of all, we don't know the extent of Jaime's injury.. Jamie has come back early from injuries both this season and last season so the guts issue is a moot point in my mind..

I've talked to Jaime and he generally feels like crap that he can't produce..

Having both of them in there would have been nice, but here is what I think Ray saw. We had been playing comfortably in the 4-5-1, holding the ball very well and playing balls over the top to try for a quick strike goal and a lead that we could hold on to. Q2 had his troubles getting to a couple of these balls, but then timed his run beautifully on one...and was outtrun to it in what should've been a 1 v. 1 with the keeper. This was about 60-65 minutes in, and Hudson clearly felt that Q2 wasn't going to get any faster as the game progressed. Trying to spark the offense, he decided to sub him out, something I don't disagree with. Putting in Lassiter over Curtis was a mistake in my opinion, although Lassiter was onside on that one play that could've changed the game.

Playing as the lone forward was a new role for Q2 and with him not being at 100% fitness yet apparantly it was much too much for him.

Well, well, we lost again !!! It is not the fact that we lost but, the way we did it, it was painfull one.
I am not surprised the Metros won "in extremis",they put a lot of effort in this game .But,we did the same thing.I like the fact that for the last two games DCU team put 100% effort in there, to keep our playoff chances. One might ask:what is happening, the talent is there, the effort is there, why we do not win ??? Well, I think, it is about time, for us ( not only me ), to recognize the truth :" we do not have talented players anymore, the ones that used to have it are out of shape and cannot run anymore( Ech ).
It was such a pain to wach our midfield!!Convey a useless wing, without soccer player's reflexes, no ball control, inept dribbling skills ( he cannot pass a A league defender,Zaide), no passing skills,no nothing. Can ya imagine him playing against Reyes ?
Defensive skills??? one more "skillfull defense play" and he would be send out for a two weeks vacation !!
I hope you guys will start to see he is a dead weight on the left side !!
Alavanjia and Ivan, what a jokers, no brains,no passing skills, illterates when it comes to reading the game, they have passed the ball to the Metros' defense more than their own midfielders. What a joke, it was like they were playing for the Metros team !! Williams a " run around without any purpose"

Seriouslly, after this game( and the ones to follow), do you guys still believe that we should keep any of those jokers, in the midfield ??I believe not, it is by far the worse midfield ever and needs to be discarded alltogather !!!....

By the way, I hope that some of you did realize that Moreno is the only real valuable player in our ofense.Without him, on the field, they are bunch of
"cuckoos" substitute for ofensive soccer players.

I must addmit, the blame is not entirely on the players side.Ray lost control of the game !! Because of those "light" training secessions, the team has no orientation on the field, some players are walking, some are just standing with an oponent covering them, some are too advanced in the other field, some are lagging behind ,no game discipline what so ever. One can understand why our attack is so erratic. The player carrying the ball has little option to pass it, nobody runs at the same time trying to elude his coverage and finding open spaces, some players( Ech,Convey,Olsen) are demanding the ball with a oponent on their backs. Our defense players trying to play some ofense find themselfs in the same confused game, were there are no available teamates for forward combinations. Our ofense is a total mess, we rarelly get in a shooting position, most of the time we play the same boring "lateral and back" midfield passes,a kind of game that brings us nowhere.

Conclusion : Ray, coach, good man, funny guy,ma man, great technician , coach of the f**** year, please OPEN YOUR SOCCER EYES and kick out the WHOLE BUNCH of THE MIDFIELD LOOSERS !!!!..
PLEASE, cut our PAIN and GET some REAL TALENTED MIDFIELDERS !!!...
And PLEASE ,my last wish, DO " TOUGH " TRAINING
    with the NEW TEAM !!!!...

P.S. Do ya think my post was explicit, clear ???

Ahh sormun. If we only had a team full of Cienfuegos' ... ROFLMAO!

Convey had a bad game, but if he were half as bad as you say, that would be a normal game for him, heh.

Our midfield did play poorly, particularly when McKinley left. But, with a healthy Olsen and Convey (separated shoulder) we'd have as good a tandem of wingers as there are in MLS.

No, the real problem wasn't the midfield, despite their poor game. The real problem was (ok listen closely, because this one is gonna shock you) ... the FORWARDS! I know, I know, I know, it's hard to believe, but counterattacking with two slow forwards doesn't really work.

Oh, but if we had Cienfuegos feeding those slow guys on the counter ... it would miraculously work.

sormun ... get a clue. Give up on your beloved central american bias and open up your eyes. Our team is horrendously unbalenced. It creates chances and it plays defense. What it doesn't do is finish.

Granted, against the Metros, we didn't create many chances either, but that's the exception not the rule.

If you want to extoll the virtues of a great midfield, use a valid example, like a healthy first team for Chicago. Citing the worst in the league doesn't help you.

Again I ask you ... what team has the best wingers. Rank the midfields in MLS from 1 (best) through 10 (worst ... which you've already stated many times would be United).

No worries, we had enough stuff to watch on the bus. Besides, we had enough liquid entertainment to keep us busy...

Yeah, actually, I was watching a replay of the game on Comcast at like 1 in the morning when I got back, and there I was on TV! Kinda cool.

Sorry for the length of this post, but I was surprised by all of the fans here fearing the worst about their team. I think fans tend to see their team in both the best and the worst light. For example, fans tend to defend their team beyond logical reason at times, and they also tend to rip apart their team at times when it's unneccesary. I think this thread is one of the latter. DC has a number of fine players on their roster. I think the starting 5 in the back (Rimando, Prideaux, Pope, Nelson, Reyes) is one of if not the best defensive unit in the league. Not surprisingly, the defense has also been the part of the field least hit by injury, and they have played together more than any midfield group or striker tandem. Chemistry is very important in this game, and thanks to injuries, DC's midfield just doesn't have it. That said, for DC to be a championship caliber team again, a couple of changes need to be made.

To start, Convey needs to move to the middle, before he becomes a pubescent version of Tab Ramos. In Tab's case, he was a natural winger who was moved to the central mid slot because he kept getting injured. Convey is a central mid who was moved out wide because Etch had the central job. Unfortunately, Convey is too injury prone to be out wide, and that is starting to show. He is too timid, and he hasn't gone 1v1 much lately. If Etcheverry was producing in the middle, that might be a good enough reason to keep Convey wide, but Marco is stifling the development of one of the next good american central mids. Marco needs to go next season, with Convey taking the central mid job. That leaves a hole at left mid. Hopefully, Mapp will be ready by then, but if not, DC will need a left winger in the offseason. Right wing is set, with Olsen starting and Villegas as a capable cheap backup. Defensive mid is another area where DC could use an upgrade. Williams is good, but with Convey as the attacking mid, DC will need someone a little more imposing to watch Bobby's back.

Up front, Quaranta is good for one starting spot, and Moreno and Quintanilla are great for the 3 and 4 spots respectively (unless Moreno suddenly has a bout of health). That leaves a hole for a starting caliber striker.

So as far as I can see, the lineup would look like:

    Rimando
    Reyes Pope Nelson Prideaux

    Olsen ????? Convey ?????

    Quaranta ?????

    with a bench of:

Villegas, Moreno, Q2, Williams, Alegria, Mapp

Everyone else is mostly worthless. That leaves 2 (possibly 3 if Mapp isn't ready) key, starting level spots that need to be filled in the offseason. If DC misses the playoffs and gets an allocation, that will take care of one of the spots, and discovery picks (slots DC has done well with this season, picking up a good starter and a contributing young player) can take care of the other two holes. DC will have the salary space, with the salary of Etcheverry, Amman and Lassiter freed up. They would still have some problems with depth. Up front, DC would be very deep, with Quintanilla being one of the best 4th strikers in the league. The midfield would be alright, with backups available for every spot except attacking mid. The defense is where the most depth is needed, so after getting the new left wing, D-mid and striker with the Allocation and discovery slots, DC should use the draft to select a backup A-mid and defense.

With all that done, and the team having the offseason to come together under Hudson's style, I think DC could easily be a championship level club in 2003. That's just how I see where DC is at right now. Their situation doesn't look nearly as hopeless as some here have been saying.

One note about the game that has yet to be mentioned. Being behind one goal allowed the opportunity to see why the midfield was horrid - lack of spacing. On every goal kick, every DC United player was within about 5 feet of the center circle! (A bit of an exageration, but not much). Where were the moves to the outside to open up space and allow players to make a run. DC United made it easy on the Metros by bunching up and allowing them to clog the passing lanes, which combined with the team's lack of height means the Metros win all the 50/50 balls. Even my club team knows how to position better on goal kicks!

I'm sure this has been said in one form or another in this 7 page thread, but I don't have an opportunity to read it all over...so just in case the obvious has not been stated in exactly this way:

    WEEEEEE SUUUUUUUUUCK!

Do we not have the least athletic Central midfield in the history of MLS? How many times did the Mutts just take a Sunday drive by Marco, Ivan, Richie, and Lazy? It's gotta suck to be in defense with this useless lazy ass midfield.

OH MY GOD! Hell has frozen over. Patronized by Metro fans.

Thanks for the kind thoughts and all, but OH MY GOD! It is as bad as I feared.

And about DC being championship caliber in 2003, can I get a dime of that stuff please?

I thought DC played quite well, splendid one touch passing at times and a solid defensive effort. With tad bit better touches in the box by your forwards and maybe a little bit of speed off your bench, I think DC could be in the top half of teams next year. We'll even give you Petke to help that process.....;)
