Well I just can't wait for midweek, it has been too damn long this offseason.

I am hoping we see a breakout game for the side on the 20th. We are supposedly building up and this is the logical game to play our best in the offseason. surely it will be the most minutes by the first team of the three games.

it sounds like stewart, cerritos and moreno are developing some understanding--i will be very curious to see that. we should also get to see young bob and of course that much ballyhooed first year player, what was his name again?

it will definitely be a fun atomosphere. the press in charleston are already covering the event and the ground should be full. there should be a decent contingent of united fans, and knowing those who will be there, they will make themselves heard.

    ... No Flames :: No Trolls ...

Mod's Addition :: I'll post the usual information about time, place, radio etc. later in the week. Also, please take a look at the updated guidelines. If you didn't notice there's a new draft charter/faq up. Comments and suggestions about how to handle match threads are welcome.

Freddy will be their(here). He is flying in on Friday from Florida and he is on the traveling roster for United.

Charleston started spring training a couple days ago but most the players will be match fit. Unfortunately for us, there won't be alot of time to build up the team cohesivness. We have a match on March 17 agains the College of Charleston but that about it.

We will have an experienced back line though and the Battery has always been stingy in giving up goals, and I would expect some fast counter attacks from Charleston and they might just sneak in one or two.

The Battery players will be looking to impress on our Coach that they deserve a starting spot.

Im looking foward to these preseason matches.

By the way, all the Battery matches will be webcasted live via the Charleston Battery website www.charlestonbattery.com. Pregame usually starts about 10 mins before the match. The DC/Crew match will webcast via the folks at matchtracker.com

I'll go out on a limb here and say that we will probably score between 0 and 1 goal, inclusive, in this game. Feeling reckless, I am.

United score late goal to drain the Coffee Cup 2-1. United fans in attendance drink too much, have too much fun, fall in love with shrimp and grits, lowcountry girls and switch allegiances for the 2004 season.

    Welcome aboard.

GrillMaster made a point to let the guys who were at the SE annual meeting know that we were going to take that game very seriously, and asked that they did as well. Kevin then went into some more details about the alleged coffee pot incident (and let something out about Eddie Pope destroying a bicycle in Guatemala). He alledged it was Eddie at first, but either added (or corrected himself) Goose and Eric Denton (clap-clap). He also mentioned that Tom Presthus "removed" some shower heads from the wall. And he very much enjoyed telling a story of how (the following year) Marco punched one of their players and knocked him out of the game for kicking Jaime the year before (since it was during a free kick near the goal, no one saw it, no foul).
Later last evening I told Brian Namoff that fans had a good quantity of beer riding on the game and he replied "Well, then I guess we can't disappoint".
Kevin feels we will score alot of goals when Bobby is back with the team.

I believe him. The Paynes have seen Bobby score more than the rest of us have.

is watson still with charleston? he could prove a hazzard to the always fragile health of our squad.

one of you charleston boys--what formation do you guys expect to see? who should we watch out for?

Yes, Watson is still in Chucktown and yes, he is hazzardous to opposing players. He definitely hasn't mellowed with age.

    English coach = 4-4-2 formation.

We've had our normal 50% turnover, so, I'll just mention the returning starters, the rest will be news to us as we well.

In goal will be Dusty Hudock, returning for his 6th year. Been league GK of the Year a couple of times. Very good, could probably earn a spot in MLS if he wanted to leave Charleston.

Mark Watson - Center back, most people have heard of him.

Linval "Rudi" Dixon (if he returns) - Center back, Jamaican international. Very experience but not the fastest, also, sometimes, a little too mellow.

Outside backs - Don't know. Terry Phelan retired, Johnny Wilson signed with Rochester and Andrew Lewis retired. So, 2 new faces there for sure. We've signed 2 youngsters from Denmark, Michael Green from the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, Nick Downing from the Portland Timbers and Nigel Henry from Montreal. Take your pick.

Left wing - Ted Chronopolous. You should know him, very steady, one of our best players.

Center mid - Steve Klein. Very steady, no flash, but few mistakes, just a hard working ball winner.

Center mid - Justin Evans. Played a little in MLS, played for us a couple of years ago, left to play in his hometown of Pittsburgh and has now returened to us. A taller version of Richie Williams. A huge pest & somewhat fiery.

Right wing - Ryan Trout has left for Rochester and so we might see Chris Goos. One of our best young players. He'll probably be starting, either here or up top.

Forward - Paul Conway. The old man of the league, just keeps scoring goals. Our all time leading scorer and leader in number of games played. Played in 2 Wembley finals in the mid 90's before coming to us. His dad was an Irish International and is currently an assistant coach for the Timbers. No speed, no flash, but wins every high ball and is always in the right place. Look up "poacher" in the dictionary and there's a picture of Conway. Also, very dangerous on set pieces.

Forward - I would normally say Josh Henderson and even though he's still listed on our roster, I hear rumors he's retired. So, if it's not him, maybe Chris Bagley, a great young player who was loaned to the Revs for their playoff run last year after we won the championship. Or look for Aleksey Korol, a new signing for us.

We only started training on Friday, so 3 games in a week is going to strain some legs. I'll expect to see everyone in a Battery shirt get some PT during the tournament.

here's a piece i wrote for A-league.com about the Carolina Challenge Cup.

    http://www.a-league.com/features/2004/fea,2004,0010.shtml

    Good Summary from Bribetaker.

Word is Both the Danes are very technicial players. one is listed as 6'4 and a very aggressive Defender.

the other is supposed to have good ball skills.

Nick Downing is another name you might be familiar with. comes to us from Portland and was with the Revs the year before that I think

nowak spoke a lot recently about that he isn't all that big on formations but rather letting the players and flow of the game determine the formation. he wants to get his best 11 out there.

i also know that he thinks in a very tactical sense and i wouldn't suprise me if the line up wasn't very fluid in terms of both personnel and formation. i could see him attempting to find favorable match ups and using a lot of players to do so.

it also sounded to me that form is going to dictate most player choices.

i think this is a good strategy to use when you have a small roster. i think one of the thing that killed ray's style was our inability to consistently put the same line up on the field--its very hard to build the sort of free-flowing understanding ray sought if you don't play the same guys/same way all the time.
nowak's system i think is to build around tactical advantages he can find based on what personnel are available. it should--in theory at least--make us less dependent on particular players.

i'll be very curious to see stokes, caroll and this dude gros. i am frankly more interested to see them than adu at this point.

i'd sure like to see us play with stewart, convey, olsen and dema (with or without a 5th mid) at the same time.

this is where several of us shall be. i used one of the links in mikey's personal thread and found a kickass rate for us. mike got a great rate for the larger group as well.

i guess it ain't that far from the stadium, though i am figuring i am gonna cab or something, i'd prefer not to drive after drinkin those boys' beer.

hey guys... i'm from charleston, but living in dc for 7 years and season tix to united for 6... great excuse for a trip home this weekend.

quick tip: taxis in charleston are not like taxis in d.c. they're few and far between, and can be a little sketchy. it's not that they're not safe, but everyone has a car there and public transportation is what 'other' people use... taxis are not a way of life for anyone other than tourists going from the airport to downtown. don't count on finding one after the game (i could be wrong, but i don't think so).

also, do yourselves a favor and check out the Wild Wing Cafe... downtown and mt. pleasant -- my favorite restaurant in the world.

btw, there's a poll going on the battery homepage that we're not winning... i'm very disappointed in all of you:

wild wings is a good time they opened one in North Charleston a few months ago but it caught on fire so it is undergoing remodeling

Taxi aren't common but you can call one. i haven't ever had a problem with them. Its about $20 from Downtown to my house in North Charleston (around 10 miles)

Hope you all enjoy your trip and see you on Sat.!

    Here's another heads up.

Mt. Pleasant, where I live, is a bedroom community next to Daniel Island. It's got some nice nightlife on Shem Creek and other places and you may find yourself there or passing through town. How you handle your drinking and your getting around is up to you.

However, be forewarned. We have a police force the size of New York City and no crime to speak of. Which means every cop is out on the road lurking. Do not speed, do not roll through a stop sign, do not go through a yellow traffic light, do not weave, do not make any sudden lane changes. Pretend your parents are in the car and the car behind you is a cop (because it probably is).

Downtown Charleston is not so risky because of the tourists and college students driving around and also because they have real crime to keep the cops busy.

Me, I'm hoping to maybe sneak a trip to Sticky Fingers, but I'll probably just end up eating at Shem Creek, the seafood is just too good. Or just some oyster bar near The Market.
Is there any place to eat at midnight Friday when we get in, near the stadium?
