I hope he plays, but I don't think they will.

Theres a reason why they're so high up in the Championship table. They've done well in the league and they're probably going to stick with their players. If I were Sheffield United, I wouldn't play him until someone in the midfield gets injured.

Don't forget he's only there for 3 months. He has very little time to prove himself worthy.

There was no way Du was staying, it was impossible. Celtic might have been willing to keep Du on a loan for another 5 months, but after his horrid performance, there's no way their putting money down on him. It would indeed benefit Du to stay at Celtic and he'd probably return to Shenhua a better player. However, Shenhua can't chance it, because it would mean not only Du would miss the start of the season, but most importantly, Shenhua would have no guarantee that after 5 months Du would return and therefore they would be unsure if they need to make a new signing in the transfer market or not.

Oh well, at the end of the day, you can't blame anyone (short of Du himself for his performance) for the fact Du's returning. Despite his crapness, Celtic was willing to keep him on and you can't blame Shenhua for not wanting to, potentially, be screwed.

    Now, hope lays in Zhang.

I blame Referee Clark for allowing the 1st goal, which was offsides. I blame Stephen McManus for missing the long ball and forcing Du Wei into a professional foul. I blame Paul Telfer, who cleared the corner kick to the Clyde goalscorer Edward Malone, for the 2nd goal.

if the entire team performed like crap, why is it Du Wei's fault?

Celtic is not making a good decision here. 700000 pounds means nothing if you compare the TV revenues Celtic could get from China. All they had to do was to let Du Wei sit on the bench and sub him in 20 minutes when they are up by 2 goals and the Chinese fans would start to watch them. The TV contract they would get from Chinese sports channels is huge.

A crapy defender these days cost more than 1 million pound. Celtic is not making a smart decision on this.

Celtic is quite poor. Also, Gordon Strachan isn't in a strong enough managerial position to take risks.

Got eliminated from Champions League and Europe= no money for transfers
China= big market, but did Everton gain a huge market when Li Tie started playing? No. Did Hao Haidong's signing and a Chinese sponsor give Sheffield United more air time in China? No.

I think you overrate the Chinese market a lot. There is certainly a lot of potential in the Chinese market, but neither Li Tie or Du Wei are really stars. They're solid players, but they're more likely to create a yawn than true excitement. They are no Shinsuke Nakamuras or Ali Karimis or Park Ji Sungs, people you can truly say are stars. These guys are more complementary players. You never saw much coverage of Koji Nakata's move to Marseille...just an example.

If Dong lives up to his potential and makes it big in Europe, expect China to take notice. Right now, Yao Ming has more star power than all these players combined.

I don't have the official numbers, but I think Everton and Manchester City gets paid for broadcasting their games in China. There's TV contract but I just don't know how much they got paid.

It is very tricky to determine the official numbers. The Chinese TV stations probably negotiated the contract with the marketing company that owns EPL's Asia broadcasting rights. Also, the EPL, not individual teams, negotiates the media contract. Everton and City probably got some additional funds indirectly.

Du Wei's situation is different, as 上海体育 only broadcasted Celtic matches not the SPL. Perhaps in Dalian all Sun Jihai matches are televised. Then the club may get the money directly.

Li Tie went over to Europe as a star (at least inside China) and a big story. Hertha's forgetting a bit, when Li went to Everton, it created a lot of excitement around China and in Liverpool as well. With time, that's all worn out though. Also, like I said in my thread on the Chinese market, these teams aren't going to sell jerseys in China. Did you start to see a lot of Everton jerseys in the stores that sold soccer jerseys in the big cities? Yes. Did you see a lot of people walking around wearing those jerseys? No.

I think part of it is that the Chinese players playing in the top leagues aren't attacking players, they aren't the types who are going to get a lot of glory (Hao is, but to be called a player, you need to actually play!). In this respect, right now Dong is the only hope. Sun Jihai hustling all over the field but having little obvious impact on the game isn't cause for excitement.

I doubt Celtic would get very much money from tv rights, as X points out, the English teams who have Chinese players ultimately have to share that money with everyone else, not sure if the SPL has a tv rights sharing arrangement, but even if they don't, I'm sure it wouldn't be that lucrative.

Most importantly, it made absolutely no business sense for Celtic to buy Du. Whatever money tv rights brought in, its doubtful it would cover the transfer fee. Celtic just plunked down an ungodly amount of money by SPL standards, even for the Old Firm teams, for Krapo (sorry, Keano) and have realized that they still need more players. Nobody is blaming Du for the loss, but he played badly, no way a team would shell out that kind of money for him after that performance. If he'd have stayed on another 5 months, he probably would've gotten more opportunities and maybe then, Celtic would be willing to pay the fee, but that won't work for Shanghai.

My uncle pointed out that Kejian basically shoved him down Everton's mouth. :)

No, no, no...That's not the case! It was Datou that was shoved down Everton's mouth. Everton and Li Tie were on the verge of signing an agreement, while at the same time Everton was in talks with Kejian as a shirt sponsor. Originally, they were going to announce the Li Tie signing first, however as talks progressed with Kejian, they forced Everton to retract their first announcements about signing Li Tie. Then when they made the agreement for shirt sponsorship, they also gave them Datou (as Shenzhen was then owned by Keijian) and wanted to make a big deal of that. After that was over with, then Everton was allowed to announce the more important signing of Li Tie.

Li Tie was indeed a star player. One of the key players on the 2002 NT squad that could make his presence felt. I blame his unfortunate situation now on that meaningless call up that got him seriously injured.

Basically, Li Tie was the one they wanted, Li Weifeng was there for a long trial because of the Kejian deal.
