Did a nice 30 minute easy run today. God it was nice. Perfect weather...low 70s, slight breeze, soem cloud cover. I love it when the weather is good cuz alot of hot women are running on the Greenbelt as well!
Congrats. Finally stopped raining here and I had a nice run outside and will be off to see the Freedom shortly.
Hi! I'm new to this thread... Fear said I should meander over here and he was right. I'm just starting to run again after being a bum for a few months. I get really easily discouraged because I don't get in shape as quickly as I used to, and I feel like I'm not improving. If everyone will put up with me, if I post my results on here, I can actually have a record and see my improvement, not to mention get a few much-needed kicks in the butt to run and some positive feedback. I need to remember not to take it too fast, and to vary my runs a bit so I don't get bored. I tend to get into a habit and then the idea of running the same place gets to be unmotivating. I'm also looking to add in a lot of speed training this time around, so I'll do drills/plyometrics some days. I just have to keep going now that I've started! I'm working on getting a running partner but I think she's way more advanced that I am right now. Of course, getting my butt kicked regularly by an 18-year-old 5'2" girl will motivate me like no one's business! I ran/walked for about 35 minutes today. Mostly walking...about a 65/35 walk/run split. I am much more out of shape than I thought I was. I only got about 2 1/2 minutes of running in at the start before I really tied up and I never worked the stitch out completely. I ate long enough prior that probably wasn't the issue, and I'm well hydrated so that wasn't it either. I'll chalk it up as a reminder I'm not made out of steel and see how I feel tomorrow. I've run Stanford and along the Wilamette, too--awesome. You MUST run the Marin Headlands sometime when you're here. You and everyone else will be there, but it's worth it. I haven't run over the Golden Gate Bridge, but it's on my list of to-dos. I think I'm somewhat jaded about it, since I know I can go and do it any time, and it becomes one of those "next week" things. This is where I'm running (when I'm running on pavement and not grass) these days: Sawyer Camp Trail in San Mateo. Those pictures don't do it justice--I'll have to bring my little digital camera along someday and take some of my own. I've just started going there because I can get there from where I work before it gets too crowded on weekdays. I'm still trying to find a reasonably uncrowded dirt/grass trail to run near where I live to try and spare my knees. I could use the track at the local high school, but the very idea bores me to tears. Anyone on here know some good trail runs on the San Francisco peninsula?
On a semi-related note...Does anyone here have recommendations about heart-rate monitors? I don't want to have to pay a ton for one, but I do want one that actually works decently.
I use a Polar A3. It's very simplistic but it does the job. Unless you are an elite level athelete you don't need a fancy schmancy one. They are neat but overkill if you are just a weekend warrior. I probably use mine about 1/2 the time I am doing cardio (running, biking, aerobics, whatever). Go back to the REI in San Carlos and see if hot REI chick knows anything about heart rate monitors and buy one off of her. Speaking of...tonight I bought melbrown the Polar A1.
You have no idea how big THAT made me smile. Good idea. I guess REI has a decent collection of heart rate monitors? I didn't know if I'd be better of somewhere like REI or a fitness store of some kind.
Re: Hi! I'm new to this thread... More than likely you started out too fast for the condition you are in. Just take it easy for the first five mins or so. Once you are properly warmed up go for a brisk walk during the first couple of minutes. Once you feel you are good to go then start jogging but take it easy. No need to think you are the next Marion Jones (minus baby ). If the side stitch comes back then cease the running and make sure you are breathing from your belly. When I was in college my running coach taught us this method of running/breathing that would help alleviate those dreaded stitches. It had to do with exhaling and inhaling when you hit the ground with one of your feets during the running motion. I never quite got the hang of it. BTW thanks for that one link you provided. I bookmarked the Bay Area Hikes page or whatever it was called. Too bad I can't afford to live there or in San Diego.
Keep in mind that if you are an REI member and you buy that heart rate monitor at full price you'll eventually get 10% or so of that back early next year as part of your 2003 dividend. Or if you can find a running store with a hot chick working then you might as well go for that. BTW...I don't have the A3. I have the A5. I'm looking at the box right now on my desk.
Well I finished the half in 1 hour 51 minutes. That's an 8:30 pace. That is about what I thought I could do but after 10 miles was hoping for a bit faster. The last 3 miles were very tough and I slowed down a good bit. Still a great time and I am starting the plans to see if I can get trained for the Baltimore Marathon in October.
Great job GoDC! Last week was not a good week for me and running and working out. The only run I got in was a quickie 30 minute run on Tuesday and then climbed for two hours afterwards. Hopefully this week turns out better but I have a feeling it won't. Oh yeah and I just got two brand new trail running shoes from Vasque late last week. One is a lot more beefier than the other with a very sticky outsole (it's Stealth rubber...the same rubber that 5.10 uses in their climbing shoes). The one I used over the weekend for my roadtrip was the lighter one. I like that one alot!
I've got a 5K Saturday morning...Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure..it's to benefit breast cancer research. I will actually be part of a team...Ladybug Soapworks . We all have to wear ladybug hats. LOL I'm gonna take it real easy in this one. I haven't run on a regular basis all of last month.
Good Luck Fear. I had forgotten to post here in a while. I am signed up for the October 18th Baltimore Marathon. I have a training program worked out starting June 15th abd hopefully will be able to work through that and give this a decent run.
Well....I did OK but not as well as I had hoped. Uhhh well it didn't help that the night before I was stuffing junk food in my mouth at 1am and only got four hours of sleep. But all in all a very fun way to start off a Saturday. Throughout the week the weather was suppose to be crappy but it has turned out to be a FANTABULOUS day!
Have we all gotten lazy and decided not to run now!?!?!? I must admit I have taken some time off since I ran in that 5K race last month. But I have been active...doing both hiking and rockclimbing. Tonight will be different though...I'm running for about 45 mins and then hitting the weights for another hour or so. I need to cleanse away this crappy feeling I have from sitting on my ass in the office today.
Is no one running now!? Well I'll admit too that my running has slacked off in recent weeks. Ugh. Did a nice 50 minute run last night in the heat. Probably in the mid 90s at 8pm. On the out leg of my run the air was really heavy, but it wasn't overly muggy. Just thick. On the way back it was OK. Did not have a good stretching session afterwards though. I know I know...I suck. Later this evening I am going to go on a 10 mile ride. Nothing too hard. Just need to get out there.
I did the Stockholm Marathon in June, since then, I've done squat. I'm down to only running like 3 hours a week...I got lucky and was able to get out for a 2 hour run on Sunday. This time last year my dog and I did a six mile run for 88 straight days. Do you guys feel it (mentally) when you don't run. I ger really down if I go a couple of days...I'm a running junkie.
Got a new pair of trail running shoes...Montrail Vitesse...uhhh I'm gonna have to break those mofos in before I run in them. I was gonna run in them tonight but I put them on and something just didn't feel right.
Hey GoDC --- How many months in advance did you train for the half? A half-marathon bug flew up my arse at lunch today and I am seriously contemplating running a half this fall...there are actually two of them I can choose from...one on 11/1 and another one on 11/2. Stupid of the organizers to compete with one another but whatever. Am I ready to run 13.1 miles? I don't know. I think after 10K I'd be knackered and crying for my mom. I haven't participated in a race since...hell...this past spring. What do I do?
Don't do it unless you have adequate time to train, Fear. And with that said, I think you would do well.
Just did a 45 minute easy run. Very nice outside. Temps in the 70s. Slight breeze. Sunny. Great late summer weather! And unfortunately I am not gonna do the half marathon in November. I just don't think I'm physically ready for something like that. Maybe I'll shoot for one next year.
I used for the half (and am using for the marathon) Hal Higdon's training guide. www.halhigdon.com 12 weeks for the half but could surely be accelerated for someone already in decent shape. Try a 10 mile training run this week and see how it goes.
Just got done with a 46:06 minute run. Ahhhh very nice! The second day of fall and the weather was spectacular. Temps in the 70s. Calm. I live in orchard country and in season were peaches, apples, and pears so it was just a very sweet smelling run. Ran in my Vasque Velocity trail running shoes. Nice. Chose not to run with the heart rate monitor. It was a very leisurely run.
Ehhhh....just got back from a 50 minute run. Not one of my best outings. Kinda struggled with the lungs and my legs were achy. Caca. Oh well...better than nothing. Gonna ice my knees soon.
