congrats on the race Go... road races are always fun... cool t-shirt, refreshments afterward and shooting the ************ with people there hell, some of the ones back home would have kegs going for the adults... always nice to see your parents getting sloshed when you're heading up to the awards stand and it's 8 in the morning
Man - you guys put me to shame. I ran cross-country/ track in HS (Grad 1986). Best 5K time 17:50, mile time 5:04 (though I ran faster in practices) In season in HS, I would run 40 - 60 miles a week. I ran the White Rock Marathon in 1993 and it was a disaster. I finished around 4:00 with a stress fracture and sever cramping muscles. I dueled it out over the last 6 miles with a 60 year old granmda who beat me. I almost gave up running forever. By 1999 I ballooned up to 205 pounds before I said "enough of that." I am 5' 1" and now weigh 170. I run 3-4 times a week, 4-5 miles each. Lift weights twice a week and play soccer on Sundays. The Ripped Fuel helps too. I ran 41:09 for a 5 miler yesterday during lunch. There is an Runway 5K at the airport here in Austin Nov 24 so I figure I can try and break 21 minutes on that course since it should be pretty darn flat. I don't run with headphones since my HS track coach woudn't let us and said that was for recreational runners - even though that is what I now am. No dog. I have run in Ireland, Indonesia and around a small island in the Java sea - boy was it humid. Toying around with running another marathon. Anyway, that's my like story. Sorry. You know what I woudl really liek to do - one of those ultra-marathons, 100 miles over land and wilderness. That sounds like a challenge.
A link from _Chachi's link: http://www.coachweber.com/ultramarathoncalendar.htm a list of all the races from 2002, with a couple for 2003. If I didn't know any better, I'd think some of those races (like the 50 K in Vancouver and the one at Red Rocks) were specifically for runners like me. I'll take it as a compliment next time someone yells that at me, assuming that they see my potential on the Ultra circuit.
welcome northside... doesn't matter what you do for times or anything... just that you do it i've only done over 10 miles a few times... i think one of those times was 18 miles... we didn't push and it felt pretty damn good... if i were to take training easy, i think i could handle a marathon halfway decent... mainly because my light frame would take a lot less pounding than most would be dealing with damn, i need to start hitting the asphalt again... this thread is getting me close... the cold weather is another side bonus... at least for me it is
Good links - thanks. I may have to stop just talking about doing one of these and actually give it a shot.
increase your base... starting trying to work in one and then 2 long runs a week... remember to give yourself appropriate recovery time... once you get your long runs up there in mileage... you might want to use the next day as a rest day, then a couple of easy days with medium miles
4:18.40 Went well until mile 22. At that point I was going easy at a 3:45 pace, but I started to tighten up and had to really ease up and walk out some of the kinks. At mile 24, I got it back together and ran it in 'till the finish. My days of running under 3 hours are long, long gone. The course is pretty tough-lots of small hills and several ramps up to the bridges. The only thing that is a negative is the streets really aren't wide enough in many parts to fit 30K runners. At many of the water stations you have to come to a complete stop, and sometimes run up behind another runner. You also use up a lot of energy navigating, darting, and avoiding "stuff." Still, I'm glad I did it.
Congratulations as well. So, two questions: what's the sorest part of your body right now, and what did/will you next training run look like?
Just my knees and quads-I did very minimal training for this, with long runs over 2 hours just the last 3 weeks before the race-also no weight training, which in the past seems to have helped alot during and after. If I ever run another, I think I might train harder. I feel kind of a let down now, wondering how fast I could run. But on the other hand, I'm not motivated like I was in my 20' when I used to run 80-100 miles a week. I'll probably do an easy 3-4 mile jog Wed or Thurs. Or I might not do a damn thing but watch footy and drink beer
What kind of shoes is everyone running in right now? I hate to admit this but I haven't done any cardio work on a regular basis in the past 2 weeks. Just got busy with my other job and other thing . I did manage to get in a run this past Friday though. I wore my Nike Air Max Triax for that. This week is looking good though...I only have to work tonight and Thursday night so that leave me with Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to get some cardio work in.
I am wearing Nike TR9000 Trail Shoes these days. Despite the added stability I seem to have a case of Plantar Faciitis (sp??). I tried to bump my milegae too quickly and am paying the price. Old age sucks. Have had to cut down to running every other day and doing a whole bunch of stretching. Bike rides are not really an option except on weekends due to it being dark when i get home. I bought a jump rope today to try to do a bit more. Stretching my foot/calves all day long here at work and icing at night. I also bought some sports inserts today and we will see if they help at all. Hope to be back ASAP but I will try to be patient with it.
i am running in my first ever race on thanksgiving morning. the 5k of the troy turkey trot in picturesque troy, ny. of course, i'll be wearing metro colors. i casually jog every so often, but since i registered for this race, i've been training regularly (intervals, hills, longer easy pace runs, etc). however, i'm a little nervous about embarassing myself out there. a 15 year old chick leaving me in the dust comes to mind here. anyway, i'll let everyone know how i did.
Have fun with it chachi. If you have done any running at all then there is no way you will come in anywhere near last and when kids try to pass you, just trip them.
Good luck _chachi! You'll have a blast. And don't worry about who finishes in front of you. Just get out there and enjoy it!!!
personal experience has told me to never worry about 15 year old chicks... i use to run with one that would break 5 minutes in the mile worry only about enjoying the run, how you feel, and the hot chicks... and don't forget about the refreshments after the race never ever worry about your time... don't even wear a watch when you run... time is beyond being even a secondary concern
one of the most popular events that morning is an un-official race known as the turkey leg. it's where the people running the 5k quit at the 1 mile marker, which happens to be the location of the troy pub and brewery.
i've heard of races where you stop every so often to hit a designated bar and drink a beer it's damn cool idea, at least interesting to watch
Whats up everyone, I just joined the Marine Corps running group in my ROTC unit...mandatory for Marine Options, but Navy Options who happen to be masochists are also welcome to join. Anyway we don't do 300-mile runs like you guys do, usually about 4 or 5, but have any of you guys ever run in cammie pants and combat boots before? Alex
Man, this thing almost disappeared in the crash!! I am planning on running a Christmas themed 5K this weekend. I think I will wear my running tights with Christmas boxer shorts over them!!
