I don't know about the seacolts.

But the 40k stadium in Cancun seems really nice. :) IF it happens of course.

Now Atlante will have fans at the game for a change, they should have done that a while ago.

    Now Baja needs a team.

This is great!, I hope they have the common sense of building the stadium next to the beachfront, that would look awesome on tv, especially being the Cancun crystal clear beachfront!

    support for oneself.
Now, if only they could change the name of the team...

Necaxa was able to do a great transition to Aguascalientes mainly because it had solidly perform for several years and it was a pity that such a good team hardly had any fans in D.F..
Atlante is a different story, though.

That's a good move. Finally some futbol in the area. Even though Cancun is a big Baseball spot in Mexico.

Doesn't Tijuana have a soccer team??? I could swear that it's one of Chivas' lower div. teams.

Im not an Atlante fan but I'd be pissed off if that were to happen. Atlante de Cancun would be the ideal name IMO.

The team will have the longest name in the history of Futbol Mexicano:
Los Potros De Hierro Del Atlante De Quintanaroo.

It would have been better if the had moved here to Cuernavaca, as its only about an hour away from D.F and the fanbase in Mexico would have no problem coming here.

All 50 of them showed up to protest the impending move. They can mobilize.

a 40K stadium in Cancun would do wonders for a 2018 world cup bid.

The article said that they were going to "remodel" the Andrés Quintana Roo stadium (7K) to make it into a 20K. Then later on they'll increase the stadium's capacity to 40K.

I think it would be better to build one close to the ocean that would be great. But I doubt they'll do it. These directivos just wanna make money quick, I don't think they'll invest in a new stadium.

I couldn't agree with you more. a 40k stadium in cancun would help mexico attract not just the world cup, but the world club championship. Let's see... tokyo or cancun in december, hmmm. It would also attract the euro teams that look for nice places to train for pre-season as well. How about a nice little cuadrangular between america, atlante, real madrid and inter? They will make their money back if they do it right.

    waaaaaaayyyyyyy over your head noob.

    world cup club in cancun?

it would have to be a state of the art stadium for that - it would have to blow the other stadiums out of the water.

what would probably happen is that the teams get there and think that's the training pitch.

I think you know I have a mate in Playa Del Carmen, and we've been thinking about this a lot. It is a much better idea, I think, than a move to somewhere like Cuernavaca. I have mentioned elsewhere that I think it is important for Mexico that football gets a strong presence in regions where it is not traditional.

Cancun is now a city of over a million people. I believe around 500 + go to see Cancun regularly (2nd division), rising to 1,500 for big games. There are plenty of fans of other teams, who will at least turn up when they come to town. In addition as the only top flight team in the entire region (jaguares next nearest, I think:- 12 hours away), they could build a strong support base.

Lets be realistic:- if they only get a four figure crowd, that's all they get here in DF:- However, if they commit themselves to the region they will be building a fan base for the future, which they aren't doing here.

People need to be convinced that its not just another stopping point for this frequently re-locating team. They need to stay in top flight AT LEAST next five years, obviously the longer the better. Also need to convince people in a traditionally non-footballing region that footy is where its at - the timing of the games will be critical. You probably won't get fanatical support to start with, but kids being born now will grow up with them there, and be the natural team to support, hopefully. This is very long term.

Although there are a lot of yanks there, there are also many many European visitors as well, the club will need to make sure they make it easy for them to come:- despite being one of the top three leagues this side of the atlantic it is not well known in Europe. Obviously this is only passing trade, but the sort which will go to one game and fill their boots with merchandise.

I do believe that if people there feel the club are committed to keeping top flight football in Quintana Roo, then it will be a success, as I say, even if they only getting 4-5 thousand they are breaking even, and breaking into a new region:- a captive market.
