Hong Kong First Division League club Kitchee admits their Spanish coach Josep Gombau is in talks to become the coach of Adelaide United. If the talks are successful then Gombau will leave Kitchee after the AFC Cup last 16 match on 14 May.

During his four years at Kitchee, Josep Gombau introduced the Barcelona football style to the club and helped the club secure two league titles. He is 36 years-old.

A friend of mine knows Gombau personally and said that he's not a bad coach, a nice guy and has a good amount of praise from players in Hong Kong. He's very likely to bring a Spanish player or two to the club, though just looking at the Kitchee teamsheet or some of his recent quotes in regards to bringing his philosophy to Adelaide will clearly show that.

From the things I've heard about him, it's a promising sign. The fact that he has a two year contract is quite smart, as it could very well take a full season to ensure the players he has understands the system and he's chopped/changed what he needs for it to take full effect. Players like Dario Vidosic could fit well into the system, but means they're going to have to put in a lot more effort when they don't have the ball; that's going to be the biggest challenge. (As one coach said about him [paraphrasing a little], "He can press the ball well all day when he wants, but that's only some of the time.")

I'm going to wait and see what happens. It's not an easy task, regardless of the stature of the incoming coach. The first season will easily be the hardest, especially with the restless fans that often come to Hindmarsh with a defeatist mentality.

Josep Gombau leaves as HC of Adelaide Utd. A bit confused as to whether the club wanted this, or him.

Looks like it was Gombau who wanted out. The rumours here in Aus are that he is headed for a role at New York City FC.

One of the best things to happen to the A-league from a coaching perspective. For me, he is up there with Ange. I just think he would have needed more time to learn a few things about Australian football to help him reach the next level (win titles with his football).
