A friend saw Colombia Spain on saturday and told me that Spain spent, of course, a lot of energy to came back from 2 goals down, it was almost 3-0, fought for their lifes and looked exhausted at the end of the game. On the other hand, I was at the 1/4 France-Brazil. Brazil showed nothing, but were barely threatened. And all the time wasting , Brazilians must have been barely tired
Is someone here that can teach me how to understand football? Because I can't. Is the magic of the sport I Suppose.
That was amazingly amateurish from the Spaniards. Looking at the semifinals, you can't help but think this has been a missed opportunity for Japan. Well, on to AFC 2026 then.
IKEDA Futoshi, Head Coach of Nadeshiko Japan (Japan Women's National Team) It's a shame the players' hard work didn't pay off, but I'm glad they fought on to the end. I thought it was a great team. The USA had played with almost the same players in the group stage, so we told the team they were likely to slow down in the second half. Our vision was to fight for the whole game and win it at the end. I thought we did a good job of eliminating their strengths, but we need to do a better job of creating attacking threats after we win the ball. There are many ways to play the game, but we need to diversify our strategy to have more options both in attack and defence. This Olympics has been a great opportunity for each player to grow and really work as a team towards a common goal. DF #4 KUMAGAI Saki (AS Roma/Italy) To be honest, I am very disappointed. We were able to execute our game plan of denying our opponents' chances and creating chances for ourselves on the counterattack. The fact that we were able to keep the game scoreless for 90 minutes shows that our approach was effective. We were looking for chances to score, but we were also prepared to play through extra time and penalties. Our priority was to win the game at the end. However, they converted their big chance while we failed to do so. That is the way it is. I am truly gutted. DF #13 KITAGAWA Hikaru (INAC Kobe Leonessa) I knew the player I was marking was their key player. There were times when I was beaten, but as a team we were able to contain them. But I was completely beaten in that one play. It was tough going into extra time, but that could be said of everyone on the pitch, so I am really sorry that I gave her the space to capitalise. We've all worked together for a long time now and I'm disappointed that we didn't achieve our goal of winning a medal, especially as I haven't been able to help the team for a long time due to injury. The Olympic Games were my dream and the biggest stage of my career. It made me want to get stronger as a player. MF #14 HASEGAWA Yui (Manchester City/England) We were able to defend the way we wanted to and create chances at the same time. As a team, we understood that if we can get one or two passes together after winning the ball, we can get some breathing space. It was really frustrating because we conceded from that one chance. It really reminded us of how difficult it is to get to the semi-finals. The intensity they showed at the end and how they capitalised on their few chances was the difference today. We were focused and defended well throughout the game. We had enough cover even when we conceded the goal. I think it is more important to look at how we got to that point than to focus on that one moment. We need to use this bitter experience to become stronger. I want to concentrate on becoming a player who can make a difference for the team.
I guess I misinterpreted the previous result between Spain and Colombia, but I had a feeling that Spain would hit a wall somewhere. Gotta say that the shenanigans involving their former FA president didn't help in the last 12 months.
The more time passes the more I realize how battered this team was. The injuries before and during the tournament. Miyazawa was fit to play but I don’t think she played enough football after her injury to be considered “in form”. Kitagawa and Fujino were in no condition to play the amount of minutes they played. Koga had a fever during the game vs Nigeria, Tanikawa had just come back from injury and was sick while Japan played the USA. Shimizu obviously a big miss. That’s at most only 16 players that were fully fit during the tournament. And that’s excluding Naomoto and Jun Endo who would’ve been in this squad if not for their knee injuries. I think it says a lot about the depth of the team that they were still competitive against the teams they played in this condition. Look at the Matildas, they had less injuries than us (albeit one of them was Sam Kerr) and their tournament was a disaster. I look forward the next World Cup. Momiki, Takarada, Miura, Matsukubo, Sugita, etc and some stand out WE league players all in consideration until then. We never know how the next cycle will pan out but there’s not much to be pessimistic about yet.
Speaking of the WWC, JFA president Miyamoto Tsuneyasu met FIFA president Gianni Infantino and expressed JFA’s intent to host the tournament in 2031. https://www.soccer-king.jp/news/japan/national/20240806/1920561.html Quote from Miyamoto ““(The chairman) asked me about Japanese soccer, the current issues we are facing, and what needs to be improved. I talked about the number of registered players. We need to increase that number, and I discussed when and how we can achieve that. To help increase the number of players, I expressed our desire to host the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Of course, there are competing countries, but he said he would like to support making it a reality. That was the main topic of today’s discussion.” Also, Omiya Ardija has officially been bought by Red Bull. Not much information yet on how or when the club will change. https://www.ardija.co.jp/news/?id=42856
Very good post refreshing my memory blurred with massive disappointment of Olympic exit. The team was decimated and still fought bravely to end competition by slightest of margin and in top eight of the world.

Kobuta - Kubota I was a little surprised when I read this. I wondered if the surname of Kobuta really exists because I have met unfamiliar and very funny Japanese names many times. By the way, Kobuta means a child pig.
They were indeed from 'Iorino Imabari' My old brain again, sends the wrong messages to the fingers or the right messages and the fingers ignore them. Thanks for the correction...again So would Kobuta be related to Nobuta? I recall a TV series 'Nobuta Wo Produce'. In 1 or 2 episodes they made pig keychains.
46th Kanto Women's Football Championship and Empress' Cup Qualifying Tournament. I translated what I could using image translate but 2 teams near the bottom were too small and blurred to read. The original is below the translation. Edit. Should add. 7 to qualify to the national tournament.
Kobuta is 子豚, and Nobuta (野豚) means a wild pig, but the drama's one is kind of a joke or a mere slander.
Great news. She will definitely see playing time. At the same time very worrying not to have any updates on Shimizu's condition. I assume she is still in Manchester..?
