I thought Notsuda might start this time, wasn't counting on Hirata also. That means both Sanfrecce Youth in the squad started the game.

They were playing against U20 I see. It's not so disappointing to see them lose so, age differencial plays a huge factor.

Today they are playing against Deportivo Toluca's senior side. Then they play Mexico U17 again.

Japan U17 lost 0-1 to Deportivo Toluca U20. Apparently the JFA have decided it was the U20 team after not mentioning that for the past week. They need to beat Mexico U17 to avoid a whitewash.

Japan will never do anything at U17 level, I've said it a million times.

I'm not too concerned. The U17s always go to Mexico and usually they tend to narrowly beat us. They've got good youth teams there. Reason why Japan always travels there.

Still excited to see how Ueda & Iwanami develop. Seem much better defensively than the previous U17 generation we had. But on attack its not so good. Is Horigome good? I remember hearing his name a while back as one to watch.

They are the ones travelling anyway, it's not like they were going to sweep Mexico at home.
This team has some good talents in it, mostly on defense (and Minamino).

U-18's beat Club Sport Cartagines of Costa Rica 3-1 in the Dallas Cup.

They play FC Barcelona tomorrow. (who actually lost to some American team)

I can't wait. This generation may not be as good as the previous but unknown talents could blossom.
And, of course, I want to see how Minamino fares against international opponents.

I get the feeling that after the 2009 U17 FWC fiasco (as subsequent evidence after the 2008 Olympics too) the JFA have decided to try integrate the taller CB's at youth level more and actually scout them out. First we had the 3 lads in the U17 side Ueda, Iwanami & that 15 year old and now these two kids.

Bloody hell 65 & 67kg? They could do with a little gym work.

64 kilos at 14 is decent ... That's my current weight. I'm not overly excited about these tall players because quality will always prevail. If they are here because they're good, fine, but if it's because they're tall, they won't do anything when they'll turn pro. And the main objective is to create good footballers for the future, not winning all the youth competitions.

    True....all of it.

But there are certain parameters of a centre-back that can't be tested as much in Japan. One of which is defensive set pieces. Whether its liked or not, its part of the game but in the Japanese youth teams that part of the game might not be tested as much, thus some shorter CB's with good ability don't have that part of their game exposed as much or tested. So therefore the overall assessment may not be completely accurate necessarily.

I'm sure those tall kids are good, but I wouldn't be surprised if maybe one of them was picked over a seemingly slightly better alternative because of his height. As a result of analysis of the last U17 FWC.

What are your expectations for this tournament? Any special players for me to look for? Don't really know the U17 team so well.

Obvious ones would be Minamino in attack.
Plus Ueda & Iwanami at CB (big kids).
