Man - I make a bunch of joke picks (IIRC I picked the West team each game) and am still trying to live it down one year later. Ouch.

It makes me almost want to take it seriously this year.

A little wishful thinking, a long-standing bias against a couple of teams, and a sick child keeping me from sleeping. (By the way, I've notice quite a few have picked Creighton to lose to Northwestern in the 2nd round. Is this because you think CU is overrated, or that Northwestern is a surprise waiting to happen?)

Sorry all but i need to amend my picks. Where ever you see UNC i meant UNCG. I have North Carolina winning first game but then losing to VCU. I have UNCG going to semis and then losing to ODU. Sorry about the confusion.

The scoring change was just a suggestion. God forbid we change a 'tradition'.

My GUESS is everyone who has won in the past - picked the champion. If that is the point of the contest - just have a "Pick the Champion" contest and forget all the rest of the picks because basically they are irrelevant. I know last year's eventual winner was mired in the middle of the pack until end (no disrespect to Fatman).

As an alternative, I will try to keep score with my proposed scoring system and crown an 'unoffiical' winner. It should be interesting to compare....(I hope I have time).

Northwestern would only be a surprise if Creighton fans haven't been paying attention this year. Maybe in other years this would be an upset, but Creighton's not scaring anyone and Northwestern has been consistent. It would be a good matchup if NU makes it there.

Here we go, with my annual exercise in futility.

FIRST ROUND WINNERS: Florida International, North Carolina, San Francisco, College of Charleston, Memphis, Coastal Carolina, Washington, American, Seton Hall, Northwestern, Boston University, Cal State Northridge, Santa Clara, Michigan State, Connecticut, Michigan

SECOND ROUND WINNERS: Wake Forest, Virginia Commonwealth, UC Santa Barbara, UNC-Greensboro, Notre Dame, Coastal Carolina, New Mexico, Virginia, Maryland, Northwestern, St. John's, UCLA, Southern Methodist, Tulsa, Boston College, Indiana

THIRD ROUND WINNERS: Wake Forest, UC Santa Barbara, Notre Dame, Virginia, Maryland, UCLA, Southern Methodist, Boston College

THE FINAL FOUR: UC Santa Barbara, Notre Dame, Maryland, Boston College

SEMI FINAL WINNERS: Notre Dame, Maryland

2005 NCAA DIVISION-I MEN'S SOCCER CHAMPION: Notre Dame

They say defense wins championships and Notre Dame has the best defense in the country so they're my pick. Somewhere, Bobby Clark is swearing because I just doomed the Irish to an early round exit!

Because so few games are televised, this is a much harder pool to predict than March Madness. But, the parity this year makes this year's tournament especially difficult as there are about 10 teams that could win it all and about 20 who could make the Final Four.

As I stated, I will be using an 'experimental' scoring system (and will keep score). After having my supercomputer grind out multiple point scoring scenarios for the last few days, the following point system will be used for the Unofficial NCAA Soccer Tournament Pool (UNSTP):

    First Round: 1 point
    Second Round: 2 points
    Third Round: 4 points
    Fourth Round: 6 points
    Semis: 10 points
    Champion: 15 points

There still is a bonus for picking the Champ - but not as much as the official contest.
