OK, I'm closing the 2008 Roster thread since we're getting to the 30 page mark ... and the 08 season's over. I've copied over NateP's good analysis of where our contract situation may stand to start off this one.

I'm confused by the Larentowicz situation.

The reason I believe he's out of contract is that he's still making $30K. If he had received a salary bump when he was promoted to the senior roster, I'd expect him to be under contract to us longer.

We know the Revs are, ah, thrifty, but they are not stupid or mean-spirited. I have to believe they offered JL a raise and he turned it down. There's not a ton of precedent in MLS for guys playing out a small contract and parlaying it into a big one. That leads me to believe he must have overseas ambitions.

Or am I over thinking this?

MLS player contracts are ordinarily for 3 years with an additional option year. Understanding he was signed in 2005 then he would have just completed his option year. Jeff was promoted to the senior roster in 2007, although I'm not sure if that involved a reworking and extension of his contract.

That is part of my confusion as well. The $30K is I believe the senior roster minimum, as opposed to the $12K & $17K Developmental deals. The question is whether the initial MLS contracts allow players to be promoted to the senior roster, with the subsequent bump to the $30K rate or if being promoted to the senior roster means signing a new 4 year contract with MLS. I'm leaning toward the first option. I just wish MLS/MLSPA/Teams would be more forthcoming with this kind of info.

I'm fairly certain that MLS developmental contracts have a mechanism that allows for simple promotion to the senior team without renegotiating the entire thing.

It would be logical from a league standpoint and I've never heard of extensions or renegotiations w/in the context of a Dev-Sr promotion. If someone can show me otherwise I'd appreciate it.

By the way, our normal Draft Strategy of "Best Available Demon Deacon" wouldn't be such a bad idea this year. This year's Wake Forest team is about as good as I've ever seen on the collegiate level.

Sam Cronin sounds exactly like the sort of player Nicol likes.

Chris Brown is Adin Brown's 'little' brother at 6-5, 225lbs.

Big thanks for the lists. Besides the England U18, which of these guys could be prospects for playing abroad?

Good chance Brito gets invited to the combine
Priestly could possible head back home
To me if they are available in the later rounds or supplimental draft they are worth a shot.

    Revs draft last four years

    2008
    Valentino - TBD
    Videira - gone
    Germanese - TBD
    Britner - gone
    Wadsworth - gone

    2007
Thompson - decent rookie year, poor second season. decent squad guy
Igwe - still young, but yet to prove much
    Solle - gone
    Byrne - gone
    Cristman - decent squad guy
    Helton - gone

    2006
    De Oliveira - gone
    Sims - gone
    Brown - gone

    2005
    Parkhurst - great MLS defender
    Riley - gone
    Lockhead - gone

So, other than Parkhurst the Revs have not drafted a quality player in 4 years. To me that says more about the effectiveness of the MLS "Super"draft, than it does of their drafting ability. They have been able to plug a few decent squad guys like Cristman, Thompson, Igwe (so far), but have not found an impact player in the draft in years.

For those of us hoping that the Revs will fill needs in the draft, I suggest they don't hold their breath. This squad may lack depth, but it is the quality of depth in which they lack. I don't believe the draft will be able to provide them with the quality depth that they so desperatly need. The MLS draft is becoming less and less relevant every season with more and more American players going overseas at younger ages, and the development of club youth acadamies.

Unless the Revs can move into the top 4 or 5 picks this season, I don't see them drafting anyone that will help them for the foreseable future. I hope they can move up and grab a player like Soumare, Movsysian, Klejstan etc...Otherwise they need to look to the transfer market, and free transfers to fill their rosters needs. The time of being frugal is at an end. You can't survive in this league anymore by the draft alone.

I currently attend Central Connecticut State and I can confidently say that after watching them both Tyrie and Klukowski would be good additions to the revs.

Yes, it's flippin' early ... but the first mock draft is out! :) Gives us something to talk about ...

I believe these are our picks:
    1st Round (Revs)
    1st Round (Crew, for Noonan)
    2nd Round (LA, for Franchino)
    2nd Round (Revs)
    3rd Round (Revs)
    4th Round (Revs)

So according to the site (which doesn't show the extra picks) they've got the following people at our draft spots:

#12 New England Revolution Def Liam Parrington 6'0" 170 Sr. Hartwick
#15 Columbus Crew Def Yohance Marshall 6'2" 170 Sr. South Florida
#18 Los Angeles Galaxy GK Zack Simmons 6'2" 185 Sr. UMass
#27 New England Revolution Mid Kevon Neaves 6'0" 175 Sr. South Florida
#42 New England Revolution Mid Joshua Boateng 5'9" 160 Sr. Liberty
#57 New England Revolution Mid Patrick Figueiredo 6'0" 155 Sr. Adelphi

So early! But so appreciated too. Any idea who is behind this?

Was Zack Simmons the UMAss GK who was working out with the Revs?

    Pass the methadone

While I completely appreciate the idea of a mock draft in November, Revs actually draft higher than was described; we will draft ahead of both NYRB and RSL. :)

Is the Bruno Guarda they predict drafted at #4 by FC Dallas the same Bruno Guarda who already plays for Dallas? Hmm

    Re: Pass the methadone

    Very true.

Here's the draft order as currently set (in reality):
    R1 -- Revs #10
R1 -- Revs #14 (Crew loses) or #15 (Crew wins)
    R2 -- Revs #24 (LA)
    R2 -- Revs #25
    R3 -- Revs #40
    R4 -- Revs #55

I'm not sure about that, but Simmons would make a lot of sense as a late first round pick. He could take the backup GK spot from Warren immediately, and serve as an understudy to Matt Reis for a couple of years.

I was thinking this as well when I saw the mock draft.

Anyway, I've decided that KAGs are right. We have the talent, and next year they'll all play up to their abilities so we don't even need to add anyone. Works for me! And think about our salary cap situation!

Doesn't matter. No offense to Warren but he seems eminently replaceable. So let Warren, Knighton and Simmons compete for the number two and three spots. If either of Knighton or Simmons can beat him out then we can free up some more cap space and let Warren go and carry to Dev keepers.

Agreed. I like Doug, but as Matt gets older (but not balder), we need to have someone behind him that can be trusted fully to cover for a month or two.
