NWSL Bay FC sells out Oracle Park, smashing attendance record An overall view of a game between Washington Spirit and Bay FC at Oracle Park, the San Francisco baseball park. (Photo: Elysia Su/ISI Photos) Bay FC set an attendance record for a standalone NWSL match when it drew a sellout crowd of 40,081 fans at San Francisco's Oracle Park, home of the baseball Giants, for its 3-2 loss to Washington. The previous record was set last season at another baseball park when 35,038 fans watched the Chicago Stars against Bay FC at Wrigley Field. “The players deserve it," Bay FC coach Albertin Montoya said about the crowd. "They've worked so hard and this league has come such a long way, and when you get football like that, I think every person who watched this game can say, ‘Hey, I’d do this again’.” Montoya goes back with women's pro soccer in the Bay Area to FC Gold Pride. When he coached it to the 2010 WPS title, its largest crowd of the season was 4,003 fans for the final against Philadelphia.
They may have "sold out" but there were a lot of empty seats, and the team looked terrible during the first half. Plus lines for merch and food were endless (people reported standing in them for 45 minutes, only to find everything sold out) and the sightlines are of course, terrible. We ended up leaving our seats and going to the (shaded) top of the bottom section where we could actually watch the game. So, woohoo. As a season ticket holder, I would say "hey, I never ever want to do this again."
I saw US vs. Japan there I believe in 2006- a cold February and I met Drew Cary. Site lines are not that good in many sections, but I understand the attempt to get more public eyes on this team and league. Maybe a game at Stanford , Levis or even Oakland in the future as a one off each year (?)
I was at that US vs Japan game at then-SBC Park, and also the Quakes game there in 2012 when it was AT&T Park. I don't remember the hassles that we encountered yesterday, especially having to make our way through too many people squashed into a concourse to get to our section. Maybe football fields are mostly too narrow for a Goodsport-approved soccer pitch, but I'd rather watch a game at a football stadium any day.
Reno to get Pro Soccer Team as USL and Reno Pro Soccer announce stadium project In the coming months, Reno Pro Soccer will gather community input to help shape the club’s identity, including team name, brand colors, crest, and matchday experience. Fans can get involved by visiting renoprosoccer.com to sign up for updates.
======== Hopefully this gets done properly. (financially- stadium etc) Wonder what league they will shoot for (USL-c or USL-1) unless I missed that somewhere. Reno is in a pretty good geographical location regardless of what league for travel purposes With USL-1 you have Eugene, Spokane, Boise (big rival ?), maybe Santa Rosa or Modesto if they go USL- 1 Sac & Vegas (of course) OAK, Monterey Bay (some could almost be bus rather than air)
Surprised to see John Doyle as part of the ownership group . May give Ian Russel the inside track to the coaching job if he wants to coach in USL .
Doyle may have more of an advisory role than a financial one. Ian certainly deserves a shot at the coaching job with his success at Reno previously. I thought I remembered that we hired Ian to do something this year, and I looked it up - he's "Head Scout" - head of our "scouting department". He may have had a role in us acquiring Vieira. Not many other acquisitions this year that don't have FoB all over them.
I like Ian. He exudes an air of quiet competence - so utterly different than some of the windbag coaches I've had to deal with. I believe he deserves a crack at a head coaching job.
Yeah, very high signal to noise ratio. When they had him on the postgame / Aftershock, it was like he was talking to assistant coaches or something. There was no defensiveness, no artifice, just the facts and honest assessment.
I think he may have the same label/stigma that Albertin Montoya has gotten "great developing young players, not really a fit for the pros" But yes, a truly nice guy and a caring, competent coach.
Wow, I didn’t realize Doyle would be involved…. Former USMNT defender John Doyle is a part of the group bringing professional soccer back to northern Nevada. Earlier today, the USL and Reno Pro Soccer announced plans for a new team and a soccer-specific stadium in Reno, Nevada. On September 8, Reno Pro Soccer closed on the former Jones West Ford site at Kietzke Lane with plans to transform this vacant parcel into a new sports and entertainment district— which will feature a soccer stadium. Doyle, who played for the USMNT in the 1990 World Cup and 1988 Olympics, is a part of Reno Pro Soccer group. He earned 53 caps for the USMNT and since his retirement, he worked as GM for San Jose Earthquakes— where he oversaw the development of the Earthquakes’ Avaya Stadium and launching of the club’s youth academy. The USL is growing rapidly with new expansion teams and new stadiums underway in multiple markets across the U.S. It has plans to launch a new Division One professional men’s league in 2028 and become the first league to have promotion and relegation in American sports.
Wait a minute, why would the Roots succeed where Kaval failed to build the new A’s stadium? That sounds suspiciously like it can’t be true. And what does that say about the Roots’ plan for the Coliseum?
The Roots have no plan for the Coliseum. They were going to build a strange triangle shaped soccer stadium in the corner of the parking lot but once the Coliseum became vacant they gave up on the idea of spending money on a soccer stadium in favor of spending money to rent the Coliseum even though it's terrible for soccer and has way too many seats. Dumb decision. But bottom line is they're just renting, which requires no long term plan. At least until the Coliseum is torn down. Will the Roots get new ownership that can afford to build a legit multi-hundred-million to billion dollar soccer stadium at Howard terminal? Because I doubt the current ownership can. Remember they were raising money online not too long ago, to build the weird triangle stadium they're no longer building (don't expect a refund). Will any such stadium require a move to the first division, either MLS or the new USL first division? Because otherwise like their current Coliseum situation that will be way too big.

Remember fifteen years ago when MLS stadiums looked nothing like their initial designs... all the beautiful stadium renderings look like the top version but how much more likely is the final stadium to look like the second version? https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.c...kland-roots-soul-sports-club-howard-terminal/
If you’re the Oakland port authority, do you award the bid to the sports club that’s never done this before, or do you go with the established real estate group, who may build a stadium there? Maybe there were only 2 bidders? It would be a nice little-engine-that-could story, but doesn’t seem like the Roots have any chance. Hey, maybe Kaval is working for that RE group?! Or maybe he’s working for the Port?!
