I clicked on nytimes.com and expected to see front page news of the "big" protest at the Masters by Martha Burk. This has a been a pet story for months at the NY Times (spiking stories not favorable to their viewpoint was the most unsettling part of this whole fiasco). Turns out about 40 people showed up and Burk was being constantly booed & ridiculed by the locals. Doesn't make for good copy on the front page. They went with a story on Tiger Woods' comeback in the 3rd round in the sports section instead. NOW's still stuck in a time warp too - "I Am Woman" was playing from the loudspeakers.

It's pretty ironic that she was attempting to help women when her protest scared away corporate sponsors. Women in the hospitality industry in and around Augusta were DIRECTLY hurt by her self-centered "protest." The avg. person is not too upset that Suzy Bigshot can't play a round with Warren Buffet and Bill Gates to talk business deals. She had as much sympathy from the general public as a sports agent for Barry Bonds looking to get another multi-million dollar contract. Should Augusta be open to women? Definitely. Should a PRIVATE club have to cave in to a woman under tremendous pressure and intimidation? Nope.

They'll admit women one day soon and maybe Martha Burk has nudged some of the fogies in Augusta to get with the times. But her tactics & demeanor are suspect and there's no huge groundswell of public support for this cause when more pressing issues are facing this country. If anything it illustrates how out-of-touch the women's movement is with today's issues.
