Jim Rooney Tapped as Boca Raton FC Head Coach
    December 14, 2017
Boca Raton FC is proud to announce the hiring of Jim Rooney, whose extensive appearance in American and South Florida soccer makes him a natural fit for the organization. Rooney will lead Boca Raton FC during the 2018 season.

Operating as a central midfielder or deep-lying playmaker, Rooney captained the Major League Soccer’s (MLS) Miami Fusion from 1999 to 2001, leading the Fusion to the Supporters Shield crown in 2001 and the US Open Cup Final in 2000. Rooney was an MLS All-Star in 2001 and in total scored 21 times and notched 22 assists in an MLS career that spanned six seasons and playing for the MetroStars, Miami Fusion, and the New England Revolution.

“Jim’s unique profile is exactly what we have been looking for at Boca Raton FC,” said president Douglas Heizer. “As a player, he captained a local MLS team and as a coach, he coached a local NASL team.”

As a coach, Rooney has played a key role in helping guide the Fort Lauderdale Strikers to the NASL Championship Series in 2011. Following his stint with the Strikers, he worked with the US Soccer U-17 Men’s National Team at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, where he coached a number of big-name players, including the 2017 U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year, Christian Pulisic.

After that, Rooney joined the coaching staff with the Jacksonville Armada of NASL.

“I’m looking forward to this opportunity,” said Rooney. “It’s a very rare to be able to coach in your hometown for your hometown club.”

Rooney’s extensive national and international pedigree between all levels of soccer will be paramount as Boca Raton FC builds towards the future.

“To coach my local club it’s something I’ve been wanting to do for years,” explained Rooney. “After meeting Douglas and the ownership group I felt this was a great fit and I’m looking forward to starting this project together with them.”

“Jim’s extensive contact list will be instrumental in helping our players make the next step in their careers,” added Heizer. “His perspectives on the game in not only South Florida, but the United States, makes him a great fit for Boca Raton FC as we look towards the future.”

I wish the RB2 didn't reinvent themselves every year, but I guess they need to keep slots open for players they really want to develop. Woly has in many ways been a victim of his own success. Players like Bezecourt and Valot were finds that he helped develop into MLS players.

Tyler Adams has just sent RBL to the Champions League semi-finals.
Perhaps the biggest goal ever scored by an American in European club football since Clint Dempsey's winner for Fulham in the 2010 Europa League v Juventus.

Anatole Abang played 19 games for the Red Bulls in 2015, 8 in 2016, and 16 for Red Bulls 2 in 2015, 2016, and 2018 combined. He now plays for Sheriff Tiraspol, who dominates Moldova. They won 10 consecutive titles, ended the streak, and won 8 of 9 to make 18 of 20. Today they played in UEFA Champions League Qualifying Round 2. Because of coronavirus, there was just one leg, and they were at Qarabag of Azerbaijan. While down 1-0, Abang got a straight red in the 37th minute. Qarabag went up 2-0, Sheriff Tiraspol scored in the 76th minute while down a man, and they lost 2-1. There are three qualifying rounds and a Playoff Round, so they would have needed to advance today and two more rounds to make the Group Stage. They haven't reached the Playoff Round since they lost to Basel of Switzerland 3-0 and 1-0 in 2010-2011. The last time they were in the Europa League Group Stage was 2017-2018.
