The NHL team that Disney started was the Anaheim Mighty Ducks. When Disney sold the team, they dropped the "Mighty".

If Red Bull ever sells New York, they could just drop the "Red". Just plain Bulls seems to have done fine for that Chicago basketball team.

That is a perfectly acceptable position.

honestly, that's most of our positions... the main guys...
I honestly have more to worry about than what the ESC thinks of me.
That's not a shot at the ESC, that's just the truth.
Like it or not, we're trying to do good for New York in bringing
the idea of supporting soccer on all levels.
Whether or not we get a MLS team is not really relevant anymore,
our agenda is bigger than that now.

After the last news about Miami expansion is it possible this scenario ?

    2010 : Philly and Miami
    2011 : Vancouver
2012 : NYC and 1 among Montreal, St Louis or Portland

    Keep dreaming.

No way MLS adds teams the year after the teams from this next round get chosen.

Nope, he just sits in the NYC boards and waits for someone to say something optimistic.. and then tries to shoot it straight to hell..

My bad, I forgot I was on the Fantasy FC boards.

    Let me amend my reply.

napolisoccer: I think your scenario will happen. Maybe not Vancouver, but we'll see. Certainly NYC will get a team (in Queens of course), and they'll play in a $1 billion stadium in Queens that will have 60,000 screaming fans whenever the team plays at whatever they call the stadium.

After all, no league can survive without a team in NYC.

Yes, MLS has said they would pause at 18 teams for a bit, and no, St. Wilpon did not make a bid for this round of expansion, and no, there aren't any concrete plans for anything, but that will certainly be overcome.

    Everyone happy now?

You gunna really buy this? Your better than that! Maybe not 2012 but 2013 dude there will be more expansion. Garber is saying that to keep the investors intersted in this tough economy. Dont believe EVERYTHING he says - just ask Sport Billy!

And if Wilpon turns around and says Garber - I want to do this and I want to do this now - guess what Garber is going to do - deny it all you want but everyone knows it! Your smarter than that - your a troll but your smarter than that!

Now that Miami is out and that the Vancouver and Portland are the 2 favourite candidate cities for the 2011 expansion, surely in the next expansion round ( I think and I hope that it will be in 2012 ) the MLS will go to East Coast and if Wilpon is truly still interesting, NYC will be the main candidate.

    2011 : Portland and Vancouver
    2012 : NYCFC and Montreal

yea - if port and vancouver are in - then thats 3 straight teams on the west coast - they would have to go back east/cental - i agree!

    2009 - Seattle
    2010 - Philadelphia

That would 2 straight teams to west coast if they had Portland and Vancouver in 2011.

And if you add Toronto to the expansion mix, that would be 2 for the West Coast and 2 for the East Coast in the more recent expansions.

And I don't know with the current economic situation if there will be any teams added in 2012 or 2013....unless something changes or someone with ALOT, I mean ALOT of cash all of a sudden wants in.

Yea - thats right - forgot about philly - geez - kill me! End of the world!

My point was Seattle, Vanc - Portland (IF THEY ARE IN) would be a lot of expansion in the NW - if they expand again I think it will be in the east!

I think 2013 would be the next - i think by then we will be out of this rut. If we are not - Expansion is the least of the MLS worries!

i think that is a huge point. the economic situation is a major factor right now.
if you go to espn's page 2, the sports guy has a great article about the NBA and the impact the economy is having on the league. a number of the points are basketball specific but many are applicable to many of the american organizations.
the MLS is going to be going through a rough patch in the next few years and with the investment required to get a team, the MLS may need to look at consolidating and growing with the teams it has rather than expanding.

I think the NBA might be the worst suited for this recession but i have to check that article out.

I agree with Kirwin that the economy is a major factor for sure! When we get out of it will def determine the next expansion! I just dont think we are looking at 2015 and past! Lets say for arguments sake we get out of this rut in 2010 as many people say (WHO KNOWS THOUGH) I think by 2013 the league could ahve investors with money willing to go again!

I dont know - i never had that kind of money so I dont know what the mentality is! lol

Question I have is - and im curious to see what everyone thinks - even in this economy - if an investor has the money - can get the stadium built (which might be easier for job creation purposes) in a city they deem would be a successful one - do they turn away? TO me - I dont see how they can!

I think that every sport is going to be hurting pretty badly. News comes that the NFL laid off 15% of staff and certain teams like the Jets in NJ had to ask non-football staff to take unpaid time off to avoid laying off workers.
I think the MLS has to worry about surviving first and foremost. There is talk that teams in the NBA will have to move, teams in the NHL might have trouble surviving. Just seems like the MLS could be vulnerable depending upon what happens in the next year or two economically....

Oh yea - but i have seen stories and heard interviews saying that MLS (becaue of the low salaries and lower ticket prices) might be the best suited for it. Im not saying they are not going to take a hit - because of course they will - but maybe fans will say - why spend 75 bucks for a basketball game when i can spend 25 bucks and catch an MLS game. I mean people still love sports - broke or not! It for sure is going to be interesting.

On the flip side - I find this funny - the economy can actually save the islanders. If they approve that lighthouse it seems the driving force behind it is job creation (Im not sure the Town of Hempstead wants it) - think of that - this economic state might save the Islanders and keep them in NY! huh - go figure.

As for purposes of this thread - we are in a "waiting game" i guess because yes - until this works out - yea - they will not expand! I know Napoli does not want to hear this but we right now are looking at 2013 - at the earliest - My opinion of course!

OH well - gunna be interesting to see how sports gets affected through all this! As a HUGE sports fan - I hope they all survive!
