The Williamsburgh Bridge has been shut down as 3 men have climbed columns with packages. Rumor #1 - Middle easterners with explosives. Rumor #2 - Massachusetts men who drank too much. As of now, they've been arrested and taken into custody. Whoever they are is not the point of this thread. New Yorkers are very much in tuned to what is going on around them. 2 years ago, when the first plane hit tower #1, alot of us thought it was an accident. 2 years later, our first thought is that it is a terrorist attack. Our lives have changed. For now, we go back to work and we'll wait to hear the official word later today.
Story here. Someone needs to post that "Way to go, jackass" picture of Hasselhoff and Gary Coleman here.
Yeah but this is the best part: In the week since U.S.-led military troops invaded Iraq, the NYPD's new counterterror role has been more visible than ever. Officers are protecting television stations to prevent a terrorist takeover. Armed with high-tech detection equipment, they're sweeping the city for radiological, chemical and biological weapons. Checkpoints are up at bridges, tunnels and highway exits. Bomb dogs are riding subway cars. Ferry boats have armed escorts to ward off suicide bomb attacks. All that, and three drunks end up in a position to blow the bridge anyway!!! They need to stop acting like these measures do anything other than make the fearful less fearful...so that they will go out and buy stuff. What was the very first ad Rudy and Pataki did for the city? "Go out and Buy Stuff."
Wait, I thought we had to rush off to war right now because Saddam was shipping all his baby nukes and other WMDs to the terrorists so they could do stuff like, well, blow up a bridge perhaps. Or was that all a bunch of hooey?
