Is it me, or is the NWSL going to become a youth league? Like the Eredivisie.

With the Rodman contract issue, it is very clear she wants to stay. But, beyond that, there are a lot of non-youth level players playing, not to mention that a lot of those younger players are very good.

I don't think the Rodman contract issue makes it clear she wants to stay. It makes it clear she wants to be paid a lot and if she can get enough in the NWSL, she will stay. It might be that she actually wants to stay, but the contract issue doesn't show that.

My guess is that the contract issue simply is part of the negotiating process, not just Rodman's process but also the NWSLPA/NWSL process. I think there are issues there to think about such as, if I read the info correctly, that Rodman's pay, if her proposal is approved, would have her receiving 1/4 of the Spirit salary cap. Is that really the way to go? It could be, but it also could have negative ramifications.

(If healthy, I think she is a premier player at the world class level.)

The NWSL is the best paying league in the world. Don't let Rodman's agent twist the facts. Berman said they would clearly approve a contract for 1 million per year. Rodman's agent wants very little paid in the first two years and then a hugely backloaded contract, which Kang will buy out at the time in comes up, and it will never hit the cap. That is the issue the league is having with it - not the total value.

Kang doesn't want to manage her cap like everyone else is.

If she doesn't want to stay, why sign the contract and have her agent do the PR rounds? And her consideration for wanting to stay is likely more than just a paycheck.

The contract seems to be iffy, and I think they are banking on a significant salary cap raise when the new TV deal comes around. That said, I don't like that one person can declare the contract void.

She was one of the few remaining stars in a Roma team that in the last two years saw most of their best players go (Saki Kumagai, Valentina Giacinti, Moeka Minami, Elena Linari) and it showed during the current Champions' League's campaign. If she leaves too, Roma will need a complete refoundation.
Although I am not sure whose player exactly you're talking about: Giugliano's first name is Manuela, not Lucia; Lucia Di Guglielmo is another high-profile Roma's player, a Full-Back (while Giugliano is a MF): who's the rumour about, exactly? :cautious:

Anyway, happy for either if she finds a place in the NWSL: how good San Diego Wave are these days? :coffee:

From Facebook’s Soccerdonna rumor mill(which usually turns out to be 80% correct) it’s Lucia D

    The source material

    https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/47268486/nwsl-voting-extra-funds-pay-stars-rodman

The basic framework of the new mechanism is that each team would have a set amount of money beyond the current salary cap to spend on star players who meet certain criteria, and that those funds could be used on multiple players. A version of the proposal is currently out for a vote with the league's board and could be approved ahead of next week's scheduled board meeting.

Not sure where I land on this.

I think that if it keeps Rodman playing here, then I am in full support.

Yeah, but then what next? Do they change the rules to keep Wilson? Or Moultrie? I'm not sure where I land on change the rules, but I'm fine with the original contract.

let’s be honest, Wilson will not leave the US anytime soon. She has a family and a husband that will hold her back

It's a step in the right direction but having eligibility criteria seems like overmanaging it. Just give the teams DP spots and let them decide how they want to use them.

While you are probably correct I know many people that after the first child wanted to leave the baby at home with the spouse and then be anywhere else. It is not a case of neglecting the child but rather saving the sanity of the parents. In many many cases the biggest stressor in a marriage is the children. And that has nothing to do with the "love" felt between husband and wife and children.
Of course a lot of the stress will be relieved by the available money and the dozens of "aunts" that are available for help.

Did not Joy Faucet often bring some of her children to practices and even matches after she stated popping them out?

Joke. A league built on individuals over teams, where the cartel defines what makes a "star". Such a slippery slope. This is closer to pro wrestling than organic sports.

I guess you are Player FC. I am a Club bigger than any player guy. I must be the minority Hate to compare, but Barca let Messi go. So did PSG. Both Clubs will survive just fine. It's not like fans stopped attending.

At least it makes it easier to stop watching the NWSL

We can only assume things, but I don't think Sophia is the type of person to leave her kid and husband behind to go to Europe.

totally respect your opinion...and once the league is on a solid footing (which I think that it now is) I am definitely for the players. Without players, there is no league.

Clubs should be allowed to decide what value any player brings. Not some set of rules/criteria established by the League. If, to be on that stable footing, they decide a player is no longer worth the cost, move on.

If the salary cap is too low, then raise it, and allow the Clubs to decide how they spend it. If the salary cap is about right, as in it protects the cartel margins, then accept it puts some players out of reach.

Very slippery slope to start changing the rules for specific players.

You also need to raise the floor salary cap. You have to keep it banalced.

Interesting how some form of socialism replaces capitalism in US sports.
