Welcome to MLS's current and future schedule now that MLS will be taking a month off in order to add a WC style competition with LigaMX. Can't touch that 34 game schedule to ease congestion for the players.
Think the most NWSL had was like 5 games in two weeks with NWSL games as well as the ICC friendly tournaments along with Women’s Cup in Louisville.
It’s going to be hard to ignore in Portland with the Riveters calling for Wilkinson´s firing all game long.
Rescheduling of matches: https://www.nwslsoccer.com/news/nwsl-announces-date-and-time-changes-of-postponed-matches Cliveworshipper and/or cpthomas, I don't see the Portland vs OL Reign on the reschedule list. Do you guys know anything about this?
Disagree. Rapinoe stuck her neck out when nobody else would over black lives and it cost her almost a year of her national team career. She changed league policy and peoples perceptions about just turning a blind eye to police violence. And she stood down the bully in the White House who himself bragged about sexually abusing women.
I think you two are talking about different things. MRAD12 is talking about Morgan's advocacy for her fellow players. You're taking about political activism in general.
CLUB STATEMENT:Effectively immediately, Portland Thorns FC have placed general manager/president of soccer Gavin Wilkinson on administrative leave from Thorns duties pending the results of the outside independent investigation, which is ongoing.— Portland Thorns FC (@ThornsFC) October 7, 2021
Correct; saw Jeff Carlisle confirm on Twitter that GW is still on with his Timbers duties. So a pretty darn weak motion by the organization.
His removal from the Timbers should have happened long ago and he never should have been the GM for the Thorns..
It seemed as if Morgan was silent about the recent investigation at Cal even though she had been vocal in the past about the Cal coach. It is great the the NWSL players have come together to demand better treatment, but it would be nice if they also supported the NCAA players.
“He’s actually the majority owner of the team as well. I have a significant percentage now that I’ve accrued with time of ownership interest in the Timbers and the Thorns. But all decisions ultimately go through him. I don’t think that probably gets talked about that much. And he’s an unbelievable soccer fan, he and my mom. They don’t miss any games. And that’s been an interesting process as well. Early on it was a lot more about the business stuff, and now what he cares about is winning more than anything else. He was an All-American football player and wrestler, and all he watches is soccer now.” -Merrit Paulson speaking about his father, Hank Paulson, on April 12, 2018. https://www.si.com/soccer/2018/04/1...rs-thorns-owner-mls-nwsl-promotion-relegation I hadn't heard anybody speak to this yet, so I thought I'd throw it into the mix.
It now is three and a half years later. Since Merritt appears to be accruing an ownership share over time, the relative ownership percentages probably have changed. At this point, we do not know who has the majority interest.
Just read on official OL Reign twitter that their game with Portland is October 13, 7:30pm local time so for me its 9:30 central time.
In the ongoing saga of the dumpster fire that is Steve Baldwin: https://theathletic.com/2877569/202...ded-sale-offer-to-y-michele-kang-sources-say/ TL;DR - he gave Kang a sale offer, which was already likely more expensive than the Spirit was worth, especially since the Spirit is currently running a deficit over twice a normal season - and then rescinded that offer. Now he and Lynch are looking for other buyers, despite Kang being *right there*, and at least one of the other interested parties could move the team away from DC.
Don't forget that MLS didn't start its season until mid-April this year. When it goes back to starting around March 1, that could ease things a bit. That said, I'm not a fan of taking a month off to play friendlies.
Well, to be fair, they're not friendlies any more - they qualify multiple teams to the continental club competition. And per @Yoshou 's original post, MLS like to complain about schedule congestion, but they still usually play fewer games than most UEFA teams. X-D Assuming the NWSLPA can get another notable boost in the minimum salary, I kinda expect the season to extend a week or two while still staying at 24 games + Challenge Cup. NWSL's schedule isn't that crammed, at least comparatively speaking, when it comes down to it.
It’s not very comparable tho. For one, the amount of travel MLS teams do adds a lot of strain to players that UEFA clubs don’t have. UEFA clubs complain about the impact of the travel they have to do as part of continental competitions, for MLS teams, they do those trips and longer as part of their regular season games. For two, UEFA rosters are significantly deeper than MLS teams, especially the ones that have more games than MLS teams do. As a result, they can have an entire second team play in the early rounds of their non-league matches. That’s also true for league matches where the quality level within the league is large enough that UEFA teams can rest their starters during league matches they are virtually guaranteed to win, or lose. That’s not a luxury that MLS teams have. Running out a second team means the team has the very real chance of losing that match. And, finally, UEFA seasons are longer. UEFA leagues generally last 9-10 months, with a 2-3 month offseason. MLS’s season is only 7 months long, with a one month long playoff. So even tho UEFA teams may play more games, those games are played over a much longer time frame and, as a result, they play less games per week than MLS teams do.
