I believe 10 women are on the panel. All of them work in the NWSL (in order to have their fifa badges). But only a handful can pass the men’s fitness to work in MLS. I know Nesbit and Mariscal did last year. And tori penso had a whistle too.
Does Nesbitt work NWSL any more? I thought she was exclusive to MLS, but I could be wrong (or the pecularities of 2020 might have made that true but only temporarily?).
I think it's been years since either Nesbitt or Felisha Mariscal worked an NWSL game, but I could be wrong. I'm attempting to consult fbref.
Does PRO still require women to meet the men's FIFA physical standards? I thought I heard that now they only have to pass the women's FIFA physical. ???
The question is oddly phrased because there’s no PRO-wide requirement. It’s based on what matches you’re doing. You have to pass the men’s test to do first division men’s matches. So women have to pass the men’s test to do MLS. Your question would imply, to a less-informed person, that women have or previously had to meet the men’s standard to do NWSL or USL matches, which fall under PRO’s auspices. That’s not true. MLS is the only domestic completion where this matters.
tbh I don’t think she has since 2019 I thought I saw Nesbitt on a few women’s matches in 2019 via PRO. It might’ve been a typo? My understanding was that she went from doing Men’s matches to having to change pace for the women’s matches for WWC19. I thought they gave her a few tune-up games. http://proreferees.com/2019/05/14/2019-nwsl-assignments-week-6/ regardless she’s good enough to be in MLS.
Yeah I misread what I was looking at. Her last season with multiple games was 2014. One each in 2018 and 2019.

Billeter had a pretty questionable call, calling back a WAS goal. She gave the signal to wait for a whistle on a ceremonial restart, but did not verbally state "wait" (according to the 4th official via the head coach, so grain of salt). WAS takes a quick free kick and proceeds to score. What is weird is that Billeter initially allows the quick kick to proceed (I can't find video but she starts running after registering that the ball was moving) and only after the goal was scored calls it back to say it needed a whistle. The issue here, for me, being that she waited too long to whistle the play dead, causing controversy. It almost seems like AR1 reminded her that it was supposed to be ceremonial.
If a goal was already scored, I would count it. The offense was not disadvantaged by the defender failing to keep distance (if that is what turned the free kick into a ceremonial one), so the goal should stand (assuming the offense does not do anything to void the goal).
Except that is not what the referees are directed to do. Once they have engaged the defenders or indicated in any way that it is on the whistle, their hands are tied.
But the defense was unfairly disadvantaged by paying attention to the R indicating it was ceremonial. Once the R indicates to wait for the whistle, the whistle must be used before play starts.
Looking at the video, she used the spray, which automatically means it is ceremonial. She stood off to the right of the ball. She got ready to move and attackers took a quick touch that got them into space and around the wall.
Yeah, I agree it was a ceremonial kick. What I don't understand is why she initially appears to let the play proceed and then retroactively take it back.
Possibly it's nothing more than that pause--we can't un-blow the whistle--to process what was happening.
I thought about this exact same call because I made it something similar in my first HS playoff a few hours ago.... (Varsity girls). Game ended 5-1. Here's what happened. 1. I whistle for free-kick and clearly, loudly instruct "Wait for my whistle." to attackers. 2. They kick anyway and miss (for goalkick). 3. I whistle for re-take 4. I ceremoniously restart by blowing whistle. 5. They score a beautiful free-kick. Defending coach not happy but I explained it... they didn't wait for the whistle. Play is dead until I whistle for restart via whistle.
