Hello everyone, My sister Allison(boots15) is taking a teaching position in Cascais, Portugal. This will be a very big and challenging move for her, and I want to see her do well. I've started this thread as a resource for her to get questions answered about Portugal, and even football in Portgual. It is my hope that she will learn a lot more about Portugal, and maybe even establish some contacts over there. She is a HUGE football fan, and is very excited at the idea of being so close to Lisbon and within a train ride of Porto. She will also be posting questions here and we both very much appreciate every piece of information you all are willing to share. Please feel free to post any bit of info you feel may be helpful! I'll start it off with an easy one: How many teams are fairly close to Cascais? I believe Lisbon is with a 30 minute train ride and obivously Sporting is located there. What other teams are nearby? Thanks so much in advance! Matt
she will be leaving on a beautiful city, the home of the ladies national champion 1. de Dezembro club
The closest Superliga team to Caiscais is in Estoril, which is right beside it (they may have even amalgamated into 1 city). Other than that there are all the Lisbon clubs: Benfica, Sporting, and Beleneses and Vitoria Setubal is not far off as well.
wow....she is one very lucky person....Cascais is beautiful!!! I used to work in Amadora She should definetly take the time to travel all over Portugal....fantastic place with great people. I particulalry liked Coimbra The Vinho verde from Ponte da Lima is amazing! Sagres beer! peixe espada. Pasteis de belem! And though I have lived in many coffee producing places, for some reason I think Portugal has the best coffee anywhere I look forward to following this thread and reminiscing about Portugal. One very fortunate woman
you are in the money, but don't forget to visit the city of Aveiro, the Venice of Portugal and the home of my Beira-Mar team, let's not forget the Ovos moles
I think she need's the whole map of portugal, from North to South, from East to West, just be careful not to swim up north of Portugal, its easier in the South area
Depending on when Allison's moving, she should also know that Estoril might be relegated this year. However, Estrela Amadora is on track to be promoted. BTW, I think I may have met Allison. Is she Bethany's friend? I noticed you gave me her username in your PM.
I think you mean Ponte de Barca they're right beside each other so maybe Ponte de Lima makes wine too, but not as good as Barca. Either way they both get their grapes from "O Pariso" Arcos de Valdevez.
She is friends with Bethany, and we all went to MLS Cup together when the Fire lost to SJ. I messed up her BS name and put Bethanys in my PM to you! She's a tallish blonde with freckles...is she going to stand out in Portugal? I'm making her a T-Shirt as a going away present but I haven't decided what will go on front. It will either be a picture of JOB scoring the first goal or LD celebrating with Figo looking pissed in the foreground.
naw she wont stand out portugals infested with germans and english in the summer they love goin there on holiday.
Thanks so much for the response already guys! Where can I find an updated Portuguese table? And on that note, how many spots go to the Champions League and how many to the UEFA Cup?
Here is the table: http://www.lpfp.pt/default.aspx?SqlPage=classificacaoSL we get 2 direct into the CL (top two in the league), 1 (3rd in league) has to beat another team to gain entry if not they would join our 3 teams in UEFA So as it stands right now: Benfica nad Sporting would go directly into the CL Braga would play home and away aginst another euro squad to join Benfica and Sporting Porto, Boavista and Guimaraes would all be in the UEFA cup.
My brother is so good to me. I'm Allison (I go by Ali) and it still hasn't hit me that I am being given such an amazing opportunity to teach in Cascais. I will be moving there August 15th. I will be working at St. Dominics International School in Cascais. As I find out more I will have many more questions to ask. Thanks already for all the information!
for the first time, its mandatory 58,000 portuguese students U 10 years old will be taken english as a second language, its a new law under the new Portuguese Socialist party
Cascais its a fantastic place to live, in fact several football stars from Benfica and Sporting live there, the weather is fine, the landscape great, well you will see all the rest with your own eyes.
There is a great restaurant minutes from Cascais, in Alcabideche called Casa do Vitor right in the center of this tiny town. My cousin owns it. This is probably one of the best areas in Europe to live. You have so much going on there with Praia do Gincho great surfing there. The Estoril race track, this weekend holding the mototcyling GP. While there you have to go to Sintra, old resort town of the monarch's. Boy I could keep going on, and on.
CONGRATULATIONS ALI!! Matt just told me a couple days ago, how exciting and what an oppurunity. Somehow you managed to find a place that could be even better than San Diego, a nearly impossible task. Hopefully you'll love living and teaching there and get to travel and see plenty of the amazing places in Europe too. You will be missed back home!
If you choose your portuguese team to support as well you choose the places you work on, I'm sure you will suport BENFICA Anyway, I live beside Cascais (Oeiras), known city to be a place where were european kings fled during the WW's. Actually, in Cascais is where influent and rich expads live and the majority of lisbon soccer players hang on. If you need any help, I'll be glad to help. GoodLuck, and next year, I hope you can post here your impressions about our league. ps. While you are here, learn how to Surf.
I heard San Diego is a really nice and unique place, different from other California cities any truth to it's uniqueness?
I've heard San Diego is one of America's best and most beautiful cities, with great weather all year around and beautiful ocean views.
hello there stogey, nice name. i visited portugal last year and had an awesome time in cascais. it is an awesome place! so what is your story?
San Diego is wonderfully beautiful and I have been very blessed to live here. I can't tell you how blessed I feel to have the opportunity to go to Cascais. A question: I won't have a car in Portugal. Will I be able to get around sufficiently in Cascais? Thanks again to everyone who has wished me well and provided me with great information on Portugal. Keep it coming. Maybe certain customs or cultural things I should be aware of?
