Rodolfo Hernández admits he doesn’t know the country well, but doesn’t think it matters. Neither, it seems, do his supporters. https://t.co/6uFZuj70tR— The Washington Post (@washingtonpost) June 7, 2022
who do you guys think is less dangerous? I mean this trump guy seems pretty bad and is just saying wacky things. Kind of funny he going to win because of Tik toc maybe Elon is setting up presidents now
In case you were wondering how elections were going in Colombia- this guy very well might win Surreal pic.twitter.com/sypYQaz5gt— Joshua Collins (@InvisiblesMuros) June 13, 2022
Salgan a votar, @petrogustavo es el presidente que Colombia necesita. Ustedes lo saben. pic.twitter.com/Pg0Zel3tbc— Martha Peralta Epieyú (@marthaperaltae) June 19, 2022
This is remarkable. Everything I'd read on Petro speculated that he had exhausted the limits of his coalition turnout in Rd1. To increase his turn out by ~20% is wild. Con 99,99% de mesas: Petro: 11'281.002 (+2'753.234 con respecto a primera vuelta). Rodolfo: 10'580.399. En primera vuelta hizo 5'953-209 y Fico 5'058010 = 11'011.219 (-430.820 que perdió Hernández solo). Mayoría votos Fajardo (888.585) llegaron a Petro. Voto femenino, clave. https://t.co/Ho0p2EJbs3— Gabriel Meluk (@MelukLeCuenta) June 20, 2022 About half from Fajardo, but he has probably brought out folks that have never voted before. Now the hard part starts.
As expected, unheard of turnout being attributed in typically under represented areas: COLOMBIA:Turnout in economically depressed departments of Pacific coast region was off the charts- and swept by Petro.Voter turnout comparison (2022 vs 2014)Choco 81% in 22, 35% 2014)Valle 63% in 22, 42% 2014)Cauca 79% in 22, 50% in 2014)Nariño 80% in 22, 51% in 2014) https://t.co/FoRhKifj9k— Gabriel Elizondo (@elizondogabriel) June 20, 2022
Well Rodolfo really was an extremely bad candidate. He also said some very disparaging things about women.
My dad keeps texting me to get him out of Colombia. EVERY Colombian I know in real life isn't happy....and BOY was this election very close! Now I am not gonna comment much on this but it's pretty damn clear how Colombia feels as if they get real shitty options for candidates; all I ever hear is complaining and complaining no matter who is in charge and who can become. It's depressing.
Colombia making history- it got ex-rebel fighter, first leftist president and it has its first black vice president, who was the first black person to run for president in the country (potentially good for the peace agreement & more inclusive system) https://t.co/OqMcVHpx9r— Solomon Dersso, PhD (@SolomonADersso) June 20, 2022
Some reasons that @petrogustavo's victory today in #Colombia is historic. 🧵 These are not normative judgments, but realities after a half century of conflict and all that it entailed. 1. Fear & stigmatization of the political left is no longer a winning campaign strategy.— Elizabeth Dickinson (@dickinsonbeth) June 19, 2022
Fascinating to read a journo from The Economist (not a left wing rag), writing with such insight on a campaign/candidate that seems to terrify so much of the populace (my fam was completely divided like so many others).
