Worth reading if but for no other reason than to compare and contrast against the Revs: http://bostonherald.com/sports/other_sports/general/view.bg?articleid=1061155134
They have an average attendance this year of 9,908. They probably got a bit of a championship bounce, but not like it was a 50% increase as last year they were at 8,661 per game. Revs on the other hand are around 12,900, down from last year's 13,200. Now, the Cannons represent one of the marquee MLL franchises in a league that averages around 5,500 fans a game I believe. The Revs on the other hand are one of the bottom feeders in a league that averages about 18,800 per game currently. While the Revs have been mostly mediocre/terrible in their on-field existence, with a blip of success (but no MLS Cups) in the mid-2000s, the Cannons have pretty much always been title contenders and finally won the league last year. The Revs have gone from being a top draw in the league's early days to seeing their attendance bounce around between 11,700 and 17,500 averages since moving to Gillette, with attendance numbers regularly skewed by the success or failure of whatever doubleheader they managed to schedule. The Cannons have pretty much consistently grown in attendance numbers as they have moved from one location to another. Which ownership group has more to be proud of? Dwyer and the Cannons, or Kraft and the Revs?
Yes, but the Revolution will have to schedule regular double-headers with the Cannons in order to get up to those numbers on a consistent basis.
The Cannons are moving to Baltimore too?? I think one thing to consider is that, to the best of my knowledge, Lacrosse isn't a multi-bazillion dollar hundred year old world wide phenomenon like soccer, so the incentive to buy local is much higher for someone who likes Lacrosse, as opposed to ye generic football fan, who can turn on Fox Soccer and watch the team his forefathers supported, playing the game at its tip top level. The international competition is not nearly as overwhelming. Cannons fans are much less likely to leave a game with a bad taste in their mouths. Very interesting article though. Great ground up look at the roots & history of the club & league. An energetic owner certainly helps...
