Paul Holocher update in today's SF Chronicle Sports...(note, if you click the link, the blurb is about halfway down the page, but the numbnuts formatters for SFGate forgot to bold the headline...). Title bound? by Dwight Chapin
i have spent years watching Paul work, as my club trains on the same field as UCSC and the Class A teams he works with... he has a well organized bunch that play within a possession system...the defense is solid with Tozier on the right solidifing the back four... Aaron Lanes in the middle is a solid ball hawk that wins almost every challenge...he gets a little heady sometimes and picks up foolish yellows but is a very impressive central midfielder... Bryan Baird may be one of the best forwards playing att he college level...deft touches, a big body, acute awareness of those around him... add a very solid bench and "Petey" in goal, and the Slugs should bring home thier first championship... good onya, Paul....
I played on the UC Davis JV team back in '85 and '86. We killed the Banana Slugs in '85, something like 7-0. Then in '86 we played in Santa Cruz and lost 2-0 comprehensively, as we played like utter crap. One of the worst memories I had playing was all the hippy fans around the field chanting "Slugs!" This article brought back that dreadful day. Hard for me to support the Slugs...
The one name I recognize immediately there is Steve Wondolowski, who was an outstanding player for Gay La Salle, which almost always fields an excellent team in any sport.
Slugs are up against it, giving up 3 goals in the first half... suprising for a side that only gave up 5 goals in the regular season...
a good question, and one that I am probably not qualified to answer as I did not see all of thier matches... but seeing how organized Paul had the boys, I would say...maybe
