Not trolling, as you both probably know, but I have a potentially annoying question: Doesn't a coach need to establish some kind of track record of success to warrant the fans taking up arms and joining his/her army? Seriously, is it simply a matter of whoever is put at the helm is our Patton? Or it more of a Braveheart, prove your worth as a leader type thing? How is this handled in Europe/England (from whence, I assume, this practice began.) Jesus. This is such a goofy question. I can't help it, I've always been curious.
i am sure this varies person to person (and i know nothing of how english groups handle it) but my loyalty is to the club in its broadest sense--players, technical staff, youth program, office staff, fans, etc.--and transcends any individuals and the opinions i have of them. i would sing the "army" song behind whomever the manager was. its not my role at the club to hire the trainer, its my role to be a fan and during the match, root for my club. it doesn't preclude being critical, it just means for 90 minutes i really try to be with the club and be only a positive force, despite the bleakness of the situation.
well seeing as we havent really had a coach long enough to let him establish himself too well, we kind of had to give up procrastinating and just enlist. my answer to the poll question: "we all are the nowak army...."
Gotta go with Peter's Army. Peter is a name that most Americans can get with. With a name like Peter, even the casual fan at a DCU game can join in on chants. Otherise they might just sit there quietly and wonder, "What's a Nowak and what does it have to do with soccer?" Plus Peter or just Pete is a lot easier to ryhme. Just my two cents.
well the whole damn song is usually slurred, more than sung by a drunken mob. though that isn't limited to just "(fill in the blank)'s army"
Maybe we should dump the controversial 'army' tag and go for something more DCish like "We're all part of Pete's Committee."
this should probably go in business and media or something, but its related to this and not a huge deal so I'll post it here, because this was the first Nowak thread I saw. I just saw "DC United hires Peter Nowak as Coach" scroll across the news ticker on MSNBC... neat, I wonder how many people who saw that knew what the heck it was talking about.
Perhaps the line should be: "We're all part of Peter's non-confrontational yet fanatical supporters..."
This is what concerns me - I sit in the front row, and people shouting "We're all PPart of PPeter's Army.." makes me think I'm gonna get wet ... ewwww.
Screw the casual fan. Songs aren't sung for them or for their benefit; they're sung for United. With that said, give me "Nowak's Army". "Peter's Army" sounds too pornographic for me.
Nowak's Army in the old country, we only use the first name if we're very friendly or very familiar with the person now, this being the US of A, it does not matter... but i still like Nowak's Army better
Wow! this vote is getting really close! We're going to have to recount all the chads... and Chicos, Grill Masters, and Red&Blacks for that matter!
Gotta be "Nowak's Army." Regardless of how it sounds, I think the coach should be known by his last name ALWAYS. I mean, do you want Tino--given his lax attitude--saying "Yes, I AM ready to bust my ass at practice today, Coach," or "Hey, Pete!" first thing in the morning?
