sadly for us, this is the crux of the matter. our only hope is for this team to be sold to someone with winning aspirations. I wish it wasn't so painfully obvious.
27th of December and no announcement yet on the new GM....... doesn't the transfer window open up in the next week or so? just when I think this organization can't get anymore inept, they somehow do.
There was no end of the year deadline and in fact they said it may take longer, and our transfer window is longer then the European one. I'm not going to be surprised if we don't announce our GM until January 10th. Anything after that and Ill wonder what the hell is going on though.
I think they want to bring back Wynne for depth (right back, fullback). It is a long season and you need at least 8 good defenders with injuries, suspensions...

If it really is Tab Ramos that is to be named GM, will they really have needed to spend time and money on an International Agency in England to find him? All they had to do was get his former USMNT buddy Dom Kinnear or anyone else in the MLS offices to dial his number.
Meanwhile, last season's US Open winner and Supporter's Shield winner has added its 7th player (including 3 HGP's). I guess if there is no new news, there is nothing to get one's hopes up?

Nah, I doubt it. You know how eager (not!) Dom is to play young players. He will ride his veteran players into the sunset of mediocrity.
it was interesting to listen to David's MLSFix podcast of Marvel Wynne. Marvel hopes he transition to CB, where he doesn't have to be as fast, and therefore play until he is 35-36.
Well, unfortunately, he is not getting taller either . My theory on Wynne is that he is not all that fast in very short sprints, i.e. his first few steps are not very fast - he takes a while to get going, especially at this stage of his career, and that gets a little worse every year. When he gets going into a full sprint he is still fast. But in the CB position you often have to make those short bursts. He would however come in handy chasing after through balls if the line is high. But his height is also not ideal for CB. So bottom line, I don't think he is starting quality at either RB or CB anymore. CB for the reasons I mentioned, and RB because he doesn't contribute enough to the attack. I know that may not be a popular opinion. Would still be useful as depth for the right price.
He should be a CB since he's simply better there than he is at right back. I'm convinced it's the reason he was brought in to San Jose in the first place. He had significant experience as a center back before, but the Quakes had two of the best center backs in the league already so they used him where they needed a smart defender. Sure enough, Goodson couldn't continue through 2016 and Wynne stepped in and did a good job alongside Bernardez, over Imperiale even. It's easy to see Bernardez getting fewer games this year than in years previous. He's older, they'll want him fit for big matches and the life of a CB can be risky in general. If that's the case, having Wynne will be an important piece to maintaining a stingy defense.
I think Wynne does reasonably well at CB but I think he is somewhat weak in the air just due to the fact that he is often going against guys that are 3-5 inches taller than he is. I don't have the numbers to prove it, but seems that the Quakes gave up more goals in the air and became more susceptible to getting scored on in set pieces with Wynne at CB. There was one game in particular (against NE?) where there was a along diagonal cross into the box and Wynne jumped but the ball went like an inch over his head and an opposing player got on the end for an easy goal. Yes, even if you're a tall guy, the ball is still bound to go just over your head occasionally, but this was a ball that I think would normally be cleared by a CB.
I agree, I'm not a big fan of Wynne at CB, imo his decision making is the thing that slows him down the most...I'm hoping he is depth at RB.
Yeah and to be clear I would be happy if they can re-sign him to a deal that hits the cap at a reasonable amount given where he is in his career. But at the same time, if he is still starting regularly I don't think the team is really improving.
The evidence suggests that Wynne is, at the very least, above average at CB. I don't think his height is hurting him any, either. There aren't that many forwards at 6'2" and there aren't that many center backs driving into the box on a routine basis. If the Quakes suffered more set piece goals it's more likely because they fouled teams more often there than in previous years. Alashe alone put many teams in good positions to score with his haphazard play. Overall, the suffered goal totals are too good to make a strong case that Wynne is an issue in the center back spot. You may think he is better at right back, which he isn't, but how many center backs in the league are better? I would argue there are probably less than 10, one of which he plays alongside. If he is re-signed, I find it hard to see him starting on the bench. He might start at right back, but Imperiale took a long while to work himself back into the lineup despite being the de facto third center back. There's a reason for that.

Height is overrated. Towards the highlight of my "career" I played CB on a coed team. I am 5'10" and in one game played against a 6'6" forward. I won every high ball that came to my area -- I just had the sorest gluteus maximi the next day from spending 90 minutes imitating a jackrabbit!
