Now Ray is supposedly interested in JoeMax??!!
Heard from an agent yesterday that DC would be acquiring JoeMax? Take for what it's worth. Who knows these days. JoeMax is a max salary player and will probably require a small allocation.

Goff reported the interest a week or two ago.

Joe Max would certainly require an allocation as ALL US NATs do when they sign with the league. As I understand it, United gas two major allocations right now (theirs and NY's). NY has the only minor allocation (for Diallo). Not sure on this. Only difference between the two is the amount of transfer funds you have. As JMM is "free", a minor would be good enough.

Before Bergin's site went down he had mentioned that the only international besides Grimandi that he had heard conversation about was Nunez. This is slightly OT for this thread but makes sense to link it to the allocation talk.

Just a few items to pass along.....

---DCU still quite interested in Moore, but nothing imminent
---Osorio no longer under consideration (money)
---Kucharsky, Tyson Nunez and Bulgarian defender remain in the mix
---Two Spanish players could be scouted soon
---Several teams interested in DC's fifth overall pick
---Stoitchkov still possible, but wouldn't happen for a while

Well, you can always count on Joe Max to work hard...

Steve -- thanks for the update. You're one of the best at keeping us all in the loop in the mysterious world of MLS.

Thanks for the update Steven. I think Moore would be a good partner for Quaranta, but I would still prefer Nunez. As far as the #5 pick goes I say we keep it and hope Clark is still around at #5 to fill our d-mid spot.

    Thanks Steven!

Ray must have turned up a few new names on his tour of Europe. It will be interesting to see if the two spanish players are quality and signable. Hmmm, 5th pick is valuable...

How do we project the top 4? That may shed some light on why the 5th pick is tempting other teams.

Not knowing that much about Clark, is he someone who could step onto an MLS starting eleven and contribute right away?

These are some of the names being tossed around for the possible top picks. Based on this list I don't see Clark falling down to the #5 pick:

    Alecko Eskandarian, Virginia, Jr., F
    Nate Jaqua, Portland, Jr., F
    Pat Noonan, Indiana, Sr., F
    Ricardo Clark, Furman, So., M
    Roger Levesque, Stanford, Sr., F
Brian Carroll, Wake Forest, Jr., M
David Stokes, North Carolina, Jr., D

    With this draft order:

    Round One
    1. D.C. United
    2. MetroStars
    3. Kansas City Wizards
    4. Dallas Burn (from CHI)
    5. D.C. United (From MetroStars) (from DAL)
    6. San Jose Earthquakes
    7. Columbus Crew
    8. Los Angeles Galaxy (from COL)
    9. New England Revolution
    10. Los Angeles Galaxy

Moore would be a great partner, tutor for Quaranta...showing him all the tricks/savvy/workrate/professionalism he's learned over the years..

He may no longer be Premiership quality, but he still is one of the best strikers/attacking mids US has ever produced, and he is better than most MLS strikers stilll...

I hope for Quaranta's sake Moore is signed

If the Josh Wolff to KC rumor comes true, that would shake up the top five a bit, but it would still be a stretch to see Clark at #5.

or slick marketing ploy for people to constantly check to see if the site is back up and running.

Anyway, I could live with Moore coming to DC.

    Thanks Steven for the details.

Okay--a couple of reactions. JMM is under contract from Everton until the end of the season. That means several things I think...
--he doesn't have to hook on with a team right away. He can afford to wait for the right situation. He will likely (I guess) explore options at getting another team in England (b/c of the work permit deal he can't renew with Everton but would easily get renewal with another club). So he isn't desperate to sign with a club. He'll probably milk the transfer window for all it's worth, guage any interest in him. But b/c he's under contract with Everton, that might also mean (depending upon the contract details) he could afford to sign for less than the max for THIS year if it was the right situation--I don't know this for a fact, only speculating.
--Kucharsky still seems to stay in the mix. I'd guess he's the fallback or contingency if things don't work out--b/c we've been hearing his name since October but there has always been someone else (Nunez, Osario, LaPaglia) ahead of him. This says to me that Kucharsky wants to be here and the numbers fit, but Ray is trolling around for someone who might be more dynamic as a striker.

Also, a "lot of interest" in the #5 pick doesn't mean many teams are trying to get it. It may just mean that a team without a first round pick (like Chicago) is viewing this as a key way to be competitive--get a good player who's cap exempt. So it may just mean there are 1 or 2 teams who are really pushing us trying to get that pick.

All of this seems pretty consistent with Kasper's comment of being done for a while. I'd guess that Ray will continue to scout around, he'll look for a gem to fall out of no-where. We'll wait until the Superdraft to see what deals materalize (and who signs up as a P-40 or goes overseas). And teams that might have dodged a cap bullet this time around will surely be faced to account in a month or so.

I could be wrong, but "lot of interest in #5" also suggests that either DC has already made a deal with #1 or has no plans to. Otherwise there would certainly be interest.

Re: Re: Now What? JoeMax Moore to DC rumor

To me, the thinking here is that other teams need and want that #5 pick (Chicago is most likely) and have a salary cap player waiting (Chris Armas perhaps?) to be shipped here in exchange for what will in all likelyhood be a salary cap exempt player..

Bulgarian defender in the mix is not good news for Brandon Prideaux, unless said player is here to cover for Nelsen whilst he is away in France..

Nunez and Kucharsky still being wooed is good news to hear as well as a possible JMM signing...

I think Osario was a longshot at best....
