Are three things I have noticed: 1 - This started to change (to me) sometime during the pandemic. I think he mentioned a job loss, or change of job to a place not close to home. 2 - At the same time, his posting of twitter seemed to increase as well (and I'm thinking doom-scrolling here). 3 - There is a bunch of stuff not just questioning, but saying, his personal beliefs are wrong from many posters. For many people, that will make them more defensive. I'm sure there might be other things as well, but I have seen much of the same change.
The debate is long settled. Christianity has long been intertwined with politics in practically every nation where it has been practiced, even for those denominations that choose to be politically avoidant. Everything else is just tit for tat and me sexualizing posts to piss off @soccernutter because of my anti buddhist bigotry
Here’s an article about Leonard Leo, whose last name reminds me that my sister went to school with identical triplets names Leo, Leon, and Leonard. And the mom dressed them alike. You just know the teacher who had them had to hate the mom every day at roll call. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/18/...e_code=1.Lk4.lIdt.D8hj7idXAH8Z&smid=url-share if that doesn’t work because of 5e paywall a gift link can be found below https://www.lawyersgunsmoneyblog.co...-major-threat-to-liberal-democracy-in-america It’s mostly about the money..how he raises money, the different entities and strategies. In about the middle the writer discusses how Leo has been able to make himself rich. The article discusses the legality of what he does, and why the Senate hasn’t investigated at all. What comes through in The article is Leo’s worldview. He comes across a) as sincerely believing Catholicism is under attack but also b) he’s really, really Catholic. He seems less like someone who shares the vision of Protestant evangelicals, and more like what the Know Nothings ranted against in the 1840s.
Pick any of the really old threads still vibrant, or any necrobumped threads. Compare the posts from 15 years ago to what’s here now. If you don’t see how low the quality is now, well, we will just have to agree to disagree.
Should we close the thread then? EDIT https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/n...gions-role-in-politics.2127451/#post-41686617
Long ago... https://t.co/WZYqvX4h42 pic.twitter.com/E9lF3JgxIz— Roxy (@RoxyTall) September 18, 2024 This is largely the current state of political Christianity, in the US, at least. Leo is a zealot, along with a lot of Protestant leaders, they crave power and wealth and have use faith and faith culture to obtain both - corrupting government, political discourse and faith all at the same time. We are reaching a peak of the influence of all three on each other, as we have in the past, and this usually ends with a reset that causes a huge reset and cultural shift. I will not miss political Christianity
Quagmire - that's the word I was looking for instead of morass... Now, back to your regularly scheduled sniping
Case in Point - The Obstructionist Wing of Protestant Christianity already prepaing for a Harris / Walz Administraiton as it is God's punishment on America... Misogynistic Christian nationalist pastor Joel Webbon says being ruled by a woman is punishment from God and so a Kamala Harris presidency will be God's judgment on America for being a wicked, rebellious, apostate nation. https://t.co/crXOteurne pic.twitter.com/kijSPUjVuY— Right Wing Watch (@RightWingWatch) September 18, 2024
Yawn. Something bad happens to people you hate: it's god punishment for them doing or being the things you hate. Something bad happens to you: It's god's punishment for not doing more to persecute the people you hate. Rinse, repeat. It's never god's punishment for hating people after he told you not to. Or punishment for pretending to know god's will. Or anything else that might make one have to reconsider one's choices.
Interesting discussion of Sarah Huckabee and her self-proclaimed "Christian" identity despite being a documented liar. Mind you, I found one of the podcasters comments about childless people running for office extremely offensive and ignorant.
See, that's the tack I've been taking when I slide into a new church or some bigot uses their faith to justify racism and homophobia - it's suprisingly effective
Y'mean people saying things like they couldn't imagine a worser(TM) president than George W. Bush, and that we've hit the lowest point ever with such an idiot in charge? But at least he knew how to correctly pronounce the name of the legendary Kansas City Wizards Midfielder Refik Šabanadžović. Of course, he thought he was the President of Poland....
A discussion of the changing focus and approach of evangelicals from the grassroots movement of change in the 1980s to a top-down revolutionary movement today.
Interesting piece in The Bulwark about America’s views on eschatology (end times.). It started out as optimistic, but the Civil War ushered in an era of pessimism, which meant that Americans who worried about the end times increasingly retreated from the world. The writer says that’s changing back a bit. The key political point is that these optimists like Trump because he has helped them make progress on achieving worldly power, on fulfilling the Seven Mountains Mandate. https://www.thebulwark.com/p/how-left-behind-got-left-behind The writer of the article wrote this book https://icjs.org/the-violent-take-it-by-force/ I don’t like this style of essay, where the author makes a series of assertions, but in order to evaluate them, you have to go to a link within the essay. IOW, the writer doesn’t include any details supporting the assertion in the article itself. You have to go to a link. But I will say that I see a lot fewer references to The Rapture than I used to, now that he mentions it.
