Sail a couple of nuclear subs off the coast. Tell CHina that we will have to install nuclear missiles in korea if there isn't a peaceful settlement. THen we'll begin negotiations.
The China gambit is clearly the key here. If they are with us, then all is well. If they are against us, this could make Vietnam look like a walk in the park.
How many of you at this point are quite a bit more concerned about N Korea than you are about Iraq? I know I am.
It's not North Korea per se I'm worried about. It's China. As someone said earlier, if China says "don't touch NK", there's not much we can do about them.
Reconfirming my view that everything any needs to know can be learned in the godfather................... Its like the time in the movie where they are getting ready to go to war. Clemenza just says to Al Pacino's character...... eh don't worry about it so much, this type of thing is necessary every so often.
Can someone explain to me why we still have troops in South Korea? SK has enough resources to defend themselves and the bark-eaters up north shouldn't be that much of a threat. Except if you're an appeaser, which SK seems inclined to be. I say, let 'em all eat bark if they want to.
The Korean war never ended and it was a UN mission which allows the US to be there. The US likes it cause they have a very large military presence in Asia.
This is all part of North Korea's crafty plan to win this competition: http://www.theonion.com/onion3412/enemytryouts.html
I dunno, it's hard to really get too fearful of this guy http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/Parliament/8058/ He looks like he was a loser in Bozo tryouts
Not me. North Korea doesn't scare me at all. They toss a nuke in the direction of our troops and they will be obliterated overnight, no questions asked.
Definitely. One thing that really worries me is the possibility that they will sell a nuke. I wouldn't put it past them.
Good point, but IMHO China has a bit more reason and common sense than North Korea. And they seem to have a better understanding of the dire consequences of ANYONE getting ready to use a nuclear warhead. Therefore, I think they'll try to talk sense into N Korea as well.
I'd love to blame the Bush Administration's weakness on this issue, or tunnel-vision on Iraq, for not facing up to this much more real threat. But SK is in total appeasement mode right now, so doing anything about NK is pretty problematic. I suppose Dubya could send a couple of cruise missiles into the reactor before it's completed, and tell South Korea "You'll thank us for it later." China has to feed and oppress over a billion people - putting any kind of army in the field would send that house of cards straight down. China's military right now consists of General Tso's Chicken (brown rice, please, not white).
Why do we automatically assume we have to attack NK? NK is interested in nuclear missiles because they are a source of hard currency (it's the reason they proliferate with other weapons) and because they want attention and a way to protect itself from the US (if you were on a list of three and the US was already about to go after the first, you'd want a way to protect yourself as well). All the NK have asked for so far is discussions and a promise that the US won't attack them. We can talk with them. In the last week or so, the situation has continued to deteroriate because the US has decided to completely ignore NK. In response, NK has increased the level of crisis, removing IAEA inspectors and monitors and we have to start to worry about the 50 plutonium rods they have in canasters. We can continue to ignore the issue and issue threats and NK will continue to increase the level of crisis. What are we waiting for, for NK to develop a nuclear weapon? One reason we're dealing with Iraq is because we didn't want to deal with them after they have nuke. Why wait for NK to develop one before we deal with NK? Any military conflict, with or without nuclear weapons will result in 1 million deaths. So I would be careful about using that option. Eventually, the US would win, but SK mght not exist any more. We need to talk to NK. Only the US can provide their security (by promising not to destroy them), so working through allies isn't going to work. Talk to them and work to step back from this building crisis. We shouldn't (and don't) trust them, but we can verify their activities. We should also punish them for their violations of the Agreed Framework (continue to deny the transfer of oil) but we need to recognize this problem and deal with it. Not ignore it as we are now.
> NK is interested in nuclear missiles because they > are a source of hard currency (it's the reason > they proliferate with other weapons) Other weapons are cheap to produce and design. Nuclear weapons are way too expensive and way to hard to ship to be profitable. > All the NK have asked for so far is discussions > and a promise that the US won't attack them. I think this is important. North Korea is very scared because it has a far more powerful nation on its border and a superpower only an ocean away. The last breakthroughs in getting North Korea to do what we want were all the result of the US issuing a statement that we do not desire the destruction of North Korea. Ever since the "axis of evil" bit, the good will we built up in the 90's has gone away. But I think we can get it back quick. N. Korea is very quick to change directions.
"Pyongyang has issued a series of threats, including one to "destroy the earth" When I was a kid playing two hand touch pointy in the streets up in harlem. The traffic would wait until we ran a play then they would go. One guy let's call him North Korea was bitching while we were running a play. So one of us told him to shut his mouth and wait. Then North Korea said I am going home and get my gun. When we heard North korea's threat we pulled him out of his car, and ran him over with it. We were not going to give North Korea a chance to go home and get his gun. The moral to this story is we should bomb that nuclear plant of theirs now today. Clinton should have bombed that plant when he was in. We can not afford to wait for North Korea to be able to use his gun. But since I truely believe we don't have the will (balls) to do this. I am sure that things with Korea will only get a lot worse then they are right now.
> The moral to this story is we should bomb that > nuclear plant of theirs now today. To have this response shows you don't know how the game is played.
A nuclear North Korea is not in the best interests of China. Their economy is moving along nicely, and don't forget the PLA owns many corporations. However, I wonder how much influence they have with the whack jobs in Pyongyang. For the short term, Japan, SK and China will have to carry the ball. Long term, regime change is clearly in order. All in good time.
I think all this media hype (thanks Ari) has been done to justify just this. Is there any other alternative really? Not my alternate world, but the reality Bush (and any persident) lives in today. Cruise Missile Diplomacy is all the rage. At the very least and all real consequences aside, we are doing something! Why we didn't bomb that site yet is a huge question for me. Milk factory? Nah, this is a possible (and proven) threat. Rumsfeld is an idiot. If you look at photos, yea the North has little electrical power and to dismiss the nuclear usages is stupid. What natural resources do thay have?
