Just to play devil's advocate here for a sec, if the missile is untested, how does George Tenet know it's capable of reaching the U.S. west coast?

They've also developed an "untested" cloaking
    device.
    More on this story later.

    Settle down, Beavis.

Now I'll admit that I've delighted in pointing out Irish's circular logic and fact-wonting arguments in the past, but he's merely reporting what's on CNN.com right now.

    Don't shoot the messenger.

    Maybe I don't like the wording. I don't know.

I mean, I could say, based on my physical characteristics, lean body percentage, etc., I'm capable of running a marathon in under 3 hours. Anybody who knows me realizes this statement uses false logic (for lack of a better phrase) because a) I don't run and b) I'm not sure I could drive a car 26 miles in under 3 hours, much less run it.

But they want to say that based on the design, it's capable?

The news here is how CNN wants people to be in a state of catatonic paranoia so that they spend all day watching CNN and being ready recipients for the commercials.

There is nothing new about this missile. There is no current development of this missile (unless something happened in the last month and CNN didn't say that). The chance of this missile actually working are close to zero. It is basically a SCUD on top of another SCUD on top of a bunch of SCUDs tied together.

If you've seen the way people react to 4-way stop signs here, you'd know this isn't really newsworthy.

You'd also be less shocked that people couldn't understand the "butterfly" ballot.

I like how people make themselves feel better by writing off all foreign ballistic missiles as lowly Scuds.or in this case, Scuds on other Scuds. had you actually studied up here, this is the papramount of the NK missile program. The Taepo-Dong 2 is an advanced multi stage missile, that as i have said before, poses a threat to the US. It may be a very distant descendant of the Scud, but it has advanced in nearly every phase. The tied up scud(super scud) which you refer to was theoretically being developed by the Iraqis to hit distant targets. The Taepo Dong is completely seperate from that idea. It can go farther, and hit its target more accurately with a larger payload then the Super Scud.So go ahead, write it off as a piece of crap. I surely don't want to risk getting shot at with one of those.

My question is why is this a big news story today? The fact that N.Korea could hit the West Coast has been know for awhile. Does Tenet repeating that really matter? This should only be a news story if Tenet said that they now thought the missile could not hit the West Coast.

    Tomorrow CNN's headlines:
People's bodies perform better with exercise and good nutrition says the Surgeon General!

The Sun will appear to set but will rise again says Naval Observatory chief scientist!

President Bush favors the wealthy says Sen Daschle!

Studies show that women enjoy sex claims noted Psychologist!

    And so on.....

It's notable in that it's the first time a government official has publicly stated that they have this capability.

Though again, I note that they're saying that an untested missile could do this. Last time I checked, there was a reason they equated hard stuff with rocket science.

Getting back to the original topic...

Is it just me, or does anyone else find the thought of an outlaw regime like the PRK actually losing any sleep at night worrying about whether or not their nuclear facilities meeting international safety standards somewhat...I don't know...

    ...laughable?

If anyone in the international community actually thinks taking this to the UNSC is going to cause the North Koreans to suddenly get religion and ask for a copy of the OSHA handbook, I've got a great ski condo in Tampa I'll sell them for a nominal fee...

I mean, golly gee, we all know how much teeth those Security Council resolutions have, don't we Mr. Hussein?

The only mystery here is how the Secruity Council will manage to weave its mandated-by-the-Charter condemnation of Israel into the text...;)

If you want to get technical about it, NK has yet to test any nukes, let alone this delivery system. So, by this logic, the US has nothing to worry about, eh?

Heck, anyone care to guess how many nukes in the US arsenal will actually work as planned?

Fear factor aside, this is all about the balance of power in the region and not so much about the protection of the continential USofA.

Yea, but as the Russians learned, accidents do happen.

There has to be way for the USA to "blow up" their plant and make it look like a meltdown and to hell with the envrionment!

There is a point to it. SCUDs are not exactly built to be the top or mid stages of multi-stage rockets. Such missiles are inefficient and unreliable.

The Taepo-Dong 2 is cobled-together mish-mash of technologies, has not been tested, and is unlikely to reach the US with any sort of military payload. It, like the Taepo-Dong 1, is probably just a technology testbed on the way to an actually useful missile which is a decade or more away, even if North Korea and Iran continue to have the resources and will power to do it all that time, which is certainly questionable.

    > I surely don't want to risk getting shot at with
    > one of those

Then don't do anything to piss North Korea off. We've had plenty of much more reliable, accurate, and deadly rockets aimed at us for decades, and we are still here.

The Taepo-Dong-2 has a first stage that looks very much like the Chinese designed DF-3 and a Nodong upper stage (SCUD-variant).

To say this thing has no chance of working is just wishful thinking. That was what they were saying just before N. Korea launched a missile right over Japan several years ago.

But it does bring up an interesting point. How can such a poor country create such missle technology, and be so far along in developing nuclear weapons? It is quite likely they are getting clandestine help from China. Rather than that country helping to contain N. Korea's weapons programs they are likely quietly helping to create them.

SpaceDaily estimates they could have that missle working by 2005, and another source incidates that they could test it this year.

We should be asking tough question of our politicians like Sen. Feinstein, about why that don't ask obvious questions like: "Why does that bottom stage of the N. Korean missle look like a Chinese DF-3?", or "Why is China selling N. Korea the chemicals needed to reprocess Plutonium from spent nuclear rods into weapons grade material?" Why are we trading with a country that is supporting N. Korea instead of containing them?
