Thanks for your updates on the Topserien, Nordby :) I don't speak Norge but your translation really helps a lot. Keep it up!

    Toppserien Round 15

You're very welcome for the updates tiej, but keep in mind that my translations from Norwegian to English are usually very rough unless I have received help from someone fluent in Norwegian like Bauser. ;)

In Round 15 action yesterday Trondheims-Ørn clinched another Norwegian league title with their 4-1 victory over Røa. When I saw this picture of Gøril Kringen, it made me wonder again why she wasn't on Norway's WC squad??

    Gøril Kringen Celebrates

Bente had a relatively easy day yesterday as Kolbotn scored six first half goals in their 9-1 road win over Larvik on a field covered with snow. Nine different players scored goals for Kolbotn including super-sub Natalia Galvez who actually started and played all 90 minutes of the match filling in for the injured Trine Rønning. With the victory Kolbotn moved into a tie with idle Asker for second place with two matches remaining.

I'd like to see Gøril back on the squad too. She, Knudsen, and Sandaune were a tough back line. Anne Tønnesen was a good defender as well, from what I remember.

Congrats to the Eagles on their league title!!

    Anne Tønnessen

"tusen takk" for posting the nice picture of Gøril and "Britney." :)

After Norway's match against South Korea I had a chance to ask Coach Knutsen about the lack of playing time for Anne Tønnessen in this World Cup and he responded by saying that Anne has been injured and was not in her best form yet while the two other central defenders (Knudsen & Stangeland) were playing better than Tønnessen.

Here is the link to the interview we had on "Inside Soccer" with Hans Knutsen:

    Silver Medal For Bente

Katrin Jonsdottir, Tonje Hansen, and Solveig Gulbrandsen scored goals in stoppage time and Bente Nordby posted a shutout as Kolbotn edged out Asker today for second place in Norway's "Toppserien" with a 6-0 victory over Røa at home.

Kolbotn needed all six goals to finish ahead of Asker on goal differential 35 to 34. Asker defeated league champions Trondheims-Ørn 3-1 today and finished tied with Kolbotn at 39 points.

It is interesting to note that Kolbotn's match was played simultaneously with Asker's directly across the Oslofjord. Asker scored their final goal against Ørn in the 53rd minute on an own-goal scored by Trondheim defender Gunhild Følstad. At that time Kolbotn led 3-0 against Røa and trailed Asker on goal differential 34-32. The final three goals were scored by Kolbotn after Røa's National Team goalkeeper Silje Vesterbekkmo was replaced by seldom used keeper Ane Sigernes in the 87th minute.

Links to Articles that Discuss Bente Nordby's World Cup 2003 Performance

Since I didn't think it was appropriate to turn the Algarve Cup thread into a discussion about Bente Nordby's performance during WC '03 I thought I would post the links to some WC '03 articles here in this thread instead:

As long as she stays healthy Bente Nordby will be Norway's #1 goalkeeper. It seems like Bente is determined to play for the Norwegian National Team at least through the European Championships this summer.

Disagree strongly if Nordby is good enough to be the #1 keeper. Agree if she's hanging on as the #3. Sounds like the former is true though.

That's ridiculous. A 'younger player' can be the sub GK and develop that way; no team gives up the best GK in the country for charity reasons. And 29 is hardly old. She should be in her prime.

I agree with everything in your post except for the part about Bente being 29 years old. I'm sure Bente would have liked to have stayed 29 for a few more birthdays, but believe it or not she actually did turn 30 last summer.

Kind of hard to believe too that Bente's first appearance for the Norwegian National Team was just a little over a month after her 17th birthday. In case anyone is interested, this match was against the U.S. in New Britain, Conn. and Norway won 1-0 with Bente starting and playing all 90 minutes.

    Birthday Greetings for Bente Nordby!

This Saturday Bente will celebrate her 31st birthday while she is taking a much deserved summer break from "fotball."

If anyone has a birthday greeting they would like to pass along to Bente, please post it here and I will make sure that she receives it. :)

    Convincing Bente to Continue Playing

Here's the link to an article I somehow missed seeing while I was in Norway last month.

It is worth taking a look at this article just to see the picture of Bente celebrating Norway's silver medal performance in the European Championships :) :

Gjør alt for å overtale Bente

The article says that Coach Bjarne Berntsen wants to do everything he can to convince Bente to continue playing for the National Team.

It was nice to read that Bente said that "it has been a long time since she has had so much fun playing for the National Team," however, she also won't guaranty that she will continue playing any more after having reached 147 (caps).

Coach Berntsen knows he has an important job to do convincing Bente to continue playing for the National Team. Norway has some good young keepers with a lot of potential, but they lack the experience and quality of Bente.

Thanks, Nordby1, I'll be PMing you something for Bente!

By the way, do you read Norwegian to be able to translate that last article you posted? Or do you know generally what it says?

    Gratulerer Med Dagen Bente Nordby!

"Tusen takk" (1,000 thanks!) for your very nice birthday greeting for Bente. I will go ahead and forward that along to her today before I leave for the "Inside Soccer" studio this afternoon.

Unfortunately there won't be much time in the schedule of today's "Inside Soccer" show to talk about Norwegian women's fotball, but hopefully I'll have an opportunity to wish Bente "Happy Birthday!" in Norwegian (Gratulerer Med Dagen!) on the air some time before midnight Norwegian time. :)

Today's show will also give me a good excuse to wear my autographed "Nordby #1" Norwegian National Team jersey  for the first time since I was last with Bente after Asker's 3-1 cup victory over Fart.

I'm far from being fluent in Norwegian, but I can read Norwegian much better than I can understand spoken Norwegian. Eventually with the help of a good "norsk ordbok" (Norwegian dictionary) I can manage to understand most Norwegian "fotball" articles, but it does take me a very long time to do the translations by myself.

    Information About Bente Nordby

I've received several PMs from fans of Bente Nordby who would like more information about her. Instead of me corresponding privately, I think it would be a better idea to post your questions here in the International Forum.

There are a lot of others who occasionally post here who actually live in Norway, speak Norwegian fluently, and are also much more knowledgeable about Norwegian women's fotball than I am and might be able to answer questions that I can't.

    Huge Road Victory For Asker!

Today Bente Nordby's club Asker advanced to the quarterfinals of the Norgesmester (NM) Cup with an impressive 4-1 victory over one of Norway's toughest first division clubs, Amazon Grimstad. Besides having a very cool name, Amazon also has some very good players on their roster including former National team star Margunn Haugenes who played for Norway when they won the gold medal in the 2000 Olympics. Amazon is coached by Margunn's husband, Gaute Haugenes, who was the head coach of Fulham when they had the only fully professional women's club in England.

SV: Huge Road Victory For Asker!

From the match report it sounds like Asker played a solid match against a very good Amazon squad. Lindy Melissa Wiik opened the scoring for Asker after receiving a nice pass from Euro2005 star Lise Klaveness in the 34th minute. Margunn Haugenes equalized for Amazon when she converted on a PK in the 50th minute.

The match stayed 1-1 until Kristin Stundal scored a goal in the 64th minute. The scoring for Asker was again set up by the play of Lise Klaveness who made a nice pass to Kjersti Thun who then found Stundal open from 11 meters out and Kristin buried the shot to give Asker the lead for good. Lindy Melissa Wiik added two more goals in the 73rd and 88th minutes to put the match out of reach and send Asker on their way to the NM cup quarterfinals.

    Amazon loses 1-4 to Asker

The local Grimstad newspaper Adressetidende had a short report about yesterday's cup match on their website:

Had a chance for a cup bombshell

(Rough translation) In spite of it being on the whole a good match with many chances created by Amazon, it was clear that they would not receive the full reward. Much of this had to do with bad luck and a very good Asker goalkeeper by the name of Bente Nordby. :)

So far so good for Coach Berntsen. Since Norway won the silver medal at the European Championships there has been no serious discussion at all about Nordby retiring from the National Team and yesterday Coach Berntsen named Bente as one of only two goalkeepers to his first post Euro2005 squad.

I found Berntsen's decision to leave backup keeper Christine Columbo Nilsen off of his 20 player squad and instead replace her with Trondheims-Ørn defender Ann Iren Mørkved a little bit surprising. I'm not sure how much one can read into Berntsen using only two goalkeepers at this time, but I have a feeling that if there was any significant doubt about Bente's future with the National Team, he might have instead named three keepers to his squad.

    More Good News From Åråsen

    http://fotball.adressa.no/nyhetsarkiv/article.jhtml?articleID=84609

(Rough translation - as always, any help I receive would be most welcome ;) )

Bjarne Berntsen hopes she continues. Lise Klaveness is certain about what she is going to do. Bente Nordby herself believes that she will play in the World Cup in China in two years.

    Bente Nordby Interview

Three weeks ago while I was having the time of my life on vacation in Montréal, Inside Soccer aired some excerpts from the interview I did last May with Bente Nordby at the Hankø Fjordhotel:
