My condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. I know a lot of us enjoyed him for the passion he brought to the game.
I'm still in shock. He was a great sportcaster and his partnering with Cantor was as good as any. Definetely would be miss and I'm super sad of the loss especially for his family and friends. Descanse en paz, Sr. Longo.
That's sad news. Longo could be irritating at times as he constantly harped on the refs during a game but he was an intelligent and at times humorous analyst. One of my favorite lines of his was when he said about a player who looked lost out on the field, "he looks as lost as a feather in a river." Or even better in a game where an obviously better team and it's inferior opponent aren't having much success. "Those who want to do it, can't and those who can, don't want to!" Longo did bring a different side of broadcasting to a game as he was one of the few, if any, broadcasters who'd talk about the philosophy of a match and how a team's play could be affected by that. It's no surprise now that I see in his bio that he had a degree in philosophy. This past World Cup was the first one I'd seen since 1982 where he wasn't the analyst. It seemed a bit strange without him. It'll be even more so now that he's gone. QEPD
I would get goosebumps when Mr Longo would give his pre game analysis and then say "Vamos Andres" i knew i was in for a treat as Cantor would start doing the play by play. He will be missed... QDEP
ditto that. My Spanish is definitely not tip-top but his partnership with Cantor was consistently my favorite game calling combo in either English or Spanish in any sport. His calm, measured delivery was the perfect complement to the excitable Cantor. He will definitely be missed. Que Descanse En Paz
Today in Telemundo in the Necaxa vs Atlante game, Cantor never mentioned Longo. Then in halftime Jesse Losada talked about him and looked really emotional. The game continued and no mention. Then as the game endend Cantor was promoting the Titulares and said " Saludos de todos con Norberto Longo incluido" and his voice broke and he looked as if he was going to cry and it looked as if he did started to cry but they endend the broadcast and then you knew that he didn't mention anything because he knew he would have lost it right there if he did. That broke my heart.
Cantor mentioned Longo before the game started. His voice broke and he started to cry a bit. Needless to say it was very sad segment.
I didn't catch before the game started. I hope they do something in Titulares and that Jesse and Cantor are there because they've been the trio since Univision. Did anybody see if they did any mentions in Univision?
no mention on univision- at least last nite, did not watch republica deportiva with rosana la boba. I did watch titulares deportivos las nite, the new guy, gave 12 minutes of talk and bio data on Longo's carreer. He also point to the left empty chair (reserved for longo) Andres was not around, I wonder what his web site has today on that matter (nothing last nite was posted)
Im sure they did. Last night I caught the tail end of the Telemundo news and I read Norberto Longo (1942-2003). I thought to myself that can't be, I must have read wrong. I happened to be on the internet at the time and did a search to confirm but found no mention of it. When I switched over to Telefutura (owned by Univison) to watch Contacto Deportivo, they mentioned it at the end of the telecast. This is when it hit me hard. Do you have a link to that site? Thanks in advance.
I found this on the Foros Telemundo El senor Norberto Longo nos ha dejado, pero no nos ha abandonado.
No more "Vamos Andres". My deepest condolences to Norberto Longo's family and friends, Andres Cantor, Jesse Losada and those who knew and love him at Univision and Telemundo. Rest in Peace Mr. Longo.
Today in Titulares it was even sadder. At the end Cantor and Lossada said their impressions of him. An just as they endend Cantor said " Se te extrañara Norberto y te quiero decir que otra vez perdio Chaca " and he started to cry. It was so sad because he and Cantor had that rivalry because Andres was from Boca and Norberto from Chacarita Juniors. Then the next segment they showed the empty seats and then gave clips with the song cuando se va un amigo. Then in the end they showed clips of him saying goodbye on TV programs and that is always sad and eerie (Phil Hartman and Chris Farley with Phil singing goodbye always comes to mind). That was really sad. His "Vamos Andres" prior to a game from Mexico was the best opening for a game. Its a big loss and the end of the best trio on soccer TV.
Yes, during Saturday's Toluca match on their Telefutura branch, which is where I first heard the the news, they mentioned the loss, talked about their dear colleague and friend, and then during the half time break repeated the news and showed his picture (an old one holding a Univision Mike) as they slowly faded to the commercial.
