definately Prinz or else the thing is rigged.....sun wen....what the hell? and mia hamm, came of the bench, she had a good past few games, but definately not enough to win POTY....out of these three Prinz should definately win it.....

i think aly wagner should have at least been nominated, along with abby wambach, and then Prinz.

What about Sinclair? She had a rather strong year with the women's national team and U19 squad...

Okay. They should have four people for this award. Mia, Birgit, Marinette Pichon and Tiffeny Milbrett. Mia is back and faster. She was the catalyst for the Freedom along with Abby Wambach. She is doing just fine for the National team. Birgit won two league championships(seasonal) and two "cups" this season. She has also led her national team to the World Cup. Marinette was the leading goal scorer, a force to be reckoned with. Despite the reservations of those who don't know she is not the only good player on her national team but she did more than her share to it to the World Cup. Tiffeny, poor Tiffeny, despite having another great year in the WUSA(including two goals in three minutes) and scoring for the National team, she continues to play for a club team that doesn't win games. This will hurt her but it shouldn't. Sinclair should get the young player's award if they had one. She will win this in a couple of years' time.

Is the basis for decision supposed to be country only or club and country?

I'm lazy, so I'll post what I said in the USA forum:

FIFA is dumb. Wasn't Mia Hamm injured for most of the WUSA season? How in the hell can she be nominated for world player of the year if she's missed most of it?

It's really just a popularity contest anyway. I'm surprised they haven't turned it into a beauty contest and nominate Heather Mitts.

Both your club and country play are supposed to figure in. It does for the men's winner, at least. I would guess it's the same for the women.

Pichon should wins this hands down if Sun (4G, 0 assists with the Beat) did not get nominated ahead of her for reasons I can only infer from the air being a little light in Zurich. Hell, Zhao Lihong and Homare Sawa had better seasons if they were going for the token Asian. Anyways...

Kelly Smith goes down and Pichon is the Charge offense - she scores 14 goals in 18 games in a 4-5-1 formation. She missed the others because she was in France nearly singlehandedly qualifying her team for the World Cup for the first time.

She scored half the goals for France in qualifying while Prinz is surrounded by a lot better talent.

Prinz won a lot of medals but FFC Frankfurt was so much better than the rest of the league and she had a great team there to support her. Umea was missing their best player in the Euro Cup final.

Admittedly, 12 goals in 15 games is impressive for Prinz, and her size and speed is unmatched by anyone.

Milbrett may have lit up powerhouse Costa Rica, but she did not not score a goal at home this season for the Power.

Mia was unconscious in the second half of the season, and she singlehandedly took the Freedom to the playoffs, but Prinz and Pichon had much better years. Mia was good for a couple of months.

Hell yeah, thyey could have the top ten in a pageant with a swimsuit and fitness competition. Hold it down in Cabo Wabo and get Waldo, Chinaglia, and Stoner to judge.

Yes I do watch women's soccer and i agree that Sun Wen should always have her name written on top! And I won't be surprise if Sunny wins the PoY next week!

Exactly what has Sun Wen done on the club and international level in 2002 to earn this award let alone a nomination?

Prinz hands down DESERVES this award.

Sun Wen was top goalscorer at the FIFA Women's World Cup USA 1999. She also helped her country to a silver medal in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics,
followed that up with the prize for highest goalscorer at the Sydney Olympics in 2000,

Since debuting in 1991, Sunny has scored more than 50 international goals in well over a century of appearances

Despite lingering injuries, it is no surprise that the best results of her club, Atlanta, have coincided with Sunny’s starting appearances for the Beat

You haven't answered my question...what has she done IN 2002 both on the club level and the international level?

    She hasn't done much.

    We're talking 2002, not career.

In 2002 or years to come there's no other player in Asia that has accomplish what sun Wen has done. And she represents Asia continent as the top player this year just as Prinz represents Europe and Mia represents American continent this year.

I truly don't think these buffoons watch the women's game. Sinclair's name should be in there. She won the Golden boot at the FIFA u19 WWC in August.

    quote from the article
"Sinclair finished the year with 26 total goals, running her 2002 playoff goal total to 10, and her career total to 14 – one behind the career record of Mia Hamm (15). Sinclair now holds or ties NCAA playoff records for goals and points in a game (3 goals, 1 assist vs. Richmond), goals in tournament (10), and points in a tournament (21)".

Then she shared the golden boot honours at the Gold Cup with Millie and Charmaine (in November).

That's quite ridiculous. She missed most of the season due to an injury and granted she played well when she did play, but IMHO that's not enough to garner POTY honours. The women's FIFA POTY award still comes off looking like a popularity contest and not one of skill.

Okay, having looked at the coaches picks I can say that some of those coaches really do know their stuff, but honestly who's the buffoon who picked Akers? She doesn't play anymore. Kind of like picking Pele for the men's 2002 POTY... Well, except that Pele's been retired for a few more years, but still........
