We claimed O'Brien off of waivers? I thought we got him from the Sounders. In fact, didn't we have to play a game with them up there as part of the deal?

he previously played in MLS (a few years ago), so MLS seems to make teams use waiver spot picks to sign players who used to be in MLS. has more to do with "MLS player rights" than anything to do with actual contracts or rights as viewed by any outside team in USL/international

Take a look at all of our draft picks (college and expansion).

How many are already gone from RSL?

I believe the answer is two. Palmer and Brenes. Are there any supplemental draftees who are no longer with us?

-In addition to Brenes, Erik Scott also left after being picked in Expansion draft. At least we sort of got compensation for Brenes (we got a 2 rounder from Chivas in 2006 I believe)

-Ara was also picked in the Expansion Draft but later dropped before the season started.

-Whitfield was picked up via giving Fire future draft picks then dropped by RSL for Washington :urrr:

-Our first supplemental draft pick Steven Rhyne was released before the season started.

-Palmer was our third pick in the Supplemental draft.

Oh I forgot one of my favorites:

-Jim Stewart from Chivas USA (who got him from CRapids via the Expansion Draft) for a 2005 draft pick. He is now essentially retired. Never played, never even practiced with RSL.

    - I am sure there are more.

I believe that was actually for Sequerias (or however you spell it) and we just used that pick to get Broome. But Sequerias may have come to us as a result of Brenes in the first place, so you are probably right in saying that it was because of him.

    He's not very good anyway.

Then again, in my book, Ellinger is still starting the wrong goalie for you guys most of the time. I think Nolly is going to be stellar when he gets some regular time.

    JEFF Stewart

    and Sequeira (for Aero :))

anyways, with Countess and Nolly both about 23, there's not point in having 3 GK's that age on the roster. 1 of these 2 seems likely to be a good GK for 10+ years. Both need to play (one MLS, one reserves) so there wasn't much point wasting a reserve spot on a 3rd GK that age.

How could I forget JEFF Stewart, he was such a pillar of strength for the 0 appearances he had for RSL. :D

Yes, Brenes was traded back to Costa Rica, Sequeira was sent to RSL in exchange. RSL then sent Sequeira to Chivas in exchance for Chivas's 2nd round pick in 2007.
Broome was traded from LA to RSL and RSL gave LA the Chivas 2nd round 2007 pick.

Have you watched DJ play? He is great. So is Nolly, but Countess has a little advantage of experience (I mean if you were the GK for the Dallas 2003 team you would have tons of experience on ppl trying to score on you too).

    Yes, I have.

    I disagree.

Yes, he's been on losing teams and has seen little to no growth in his game over that time from what I've seen. For someone who came into the league when he did, and got put into a starting position for much of his time in Dallas, he should be head and shoulders above where he is now in my opinion.

I don't think that the difference right now between Nolly and Countess is huge (although I do think Jay has the upper hand in talent and DJ in experience) but I think that in the next few years, with playing time, Nolly will be signifcantly better than DJ.

Not to try to take a potshot at RSL (after all, it's tough being an expansion team) but it's not like the team is trying to hold onto first place or in the playoffs and it's certainly not like DJ is the only reason you guys have any success. Is Nolly going to lose games that you guys are winning or drawing? Doubt it.

I'd just like to see Jay get some more time is all, pretty much.

DJ Countess has played, realistically, one year in this league. He played, as a rookie, the entire 2003 season as GK for the worse team in MLS history. He was behind the worse defense in MLS history. Let's see how any good GK handles that (welcome to the club Guzan!).
DJ was traded to the Fire for 2004, where he was the backup and he had barely any playing time. And yes, dispite the fact that DJ didn't play, the Fire sucked last year too.
If you had watched the RSL games thus far this year, you would see that DJ is the only reason why some of RSL's games weren't 10-0 blowouts.
Is Nolly good? Heck yes. He will be a great GK in this League when his time comes. But when you compare both of them in the talent department, they are about even. Only DJ's "experience" gives him the edge.

The big difference between Nolly and Countess is their agressivness and willingness to come off of their lines. Countess has always been, and has become moreso since the injury he suffered in the Chivas game, timid. He doesn't command the box like Nolly can and does. Countess also tends to distribute poorly/slowly, especially on counter opportunities, sometimes because he bobbles or drops balls that he should control and distribute more quickly. But we haven't seen Nolly enough to see how much of an improvement he would be. Countess is a shot stopper/line keeper, while Nolly is definately more aggressive off his line and a more comanding presence in his area.

That said, talentwise, I'd say that they are at least even. This is why I'd like to see Nolly get more minutes to begin evening up the experience gap. Open Cup, maybe.

Right now, Countess is still my #1. But Nolly is better than a #2. (A #1.5?!)

This, of course, is great for the team. As competetion at all positions pushes the level in the right direction. I have no doubt that Nolly will be a great keeper in this league, but, if he can't get minutes in Salt Lake, I hope RSL holds on just long enough to get something good for him and send him on the way with a thank you and well wishes.

I think it's terrific to have two good goalies back there fighting for the position.

I've seen DJ make a couple of errors but he's made plenty of spectacular saves... The real trick will be keeping Nolly interested and willing to keep fighting for the position. He will get a chance at RSL - players get hurt, DJ may go through a slump, whatever.

The real shame is that MLS teams couldn't have a tad bit more money to keep a few more players around in terms of the reserves/development - all in good time, I guess.

I want to add (and it is *gasp* on-topic), that Noah Palmer was a good college GK too. He played for Maryland I believe and played well in the NCAA tourney.
I hope he recovers and someone picks him up soon.

Well, at the risk of sounding like Nolly's brother (I'm not) I don't really agree with this either.

Palmer was the weak link that cost Maryland in a lot of the games they lost, considering the quality players he had in front of him. I've seen him give up some goals that rival Pat Onstad's opening MLS disaster, and he was at fault at two PKs in two seperate Final Four games that knocked them out of the tournament.

At least this was was more on topic for me.

Did you actually watch the Maryland Tournament games? Palmer saved them time after time.

But alas, Palmer is gone. RIP ie good luck with another MLS team.

Yeah. I saw him absolutely gift SLU two incredibly soft goals in a freezing doubleheader at UMD a couple seasons back. It should have been a blowout for the Terps, but Noah kept it close for the Billikens.

As you said though, he's gone. I think you guys aren't losing a thing, but the point is really moot.

I wish, then maybe I could get some free tickets. :)

I am making certain to be at the DC/RSL game but it's in part to see someone else from your team I know.
