I got this info from Oliver's site: Univision Communications (NYSE: UVN) holds US Spanish-language TV rights to the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup. Matches will air on Univision, Galavision, and/or Telefutura. FIFA was unable to sell US English-language TV rights to any network or promoter. This Sucks big time!...OH well thank God i have univision...
That's fine - I'll buy it. I just want to see it - don't care much how. But in English preferably or Ty Keoughese.
I'd watch it in ancient Greek if there were a choice between that language and whatever Ty does to English.
Why would any promoter want to buy PPV rights to something that Univision/Telefutura/Galavision will air? The Confed Cup is a relatively minor tournament.
This sucks big time. I guess it will be text message games for me since I refuse to buy PPV. Oh well.
I wanna know when those spanish stations will start using the SAP option on TVs and broadcast soccer games in English.
Archilochus calls a pretty good match, but Homer is a terrible color commentator, for obvious reasons.
The US wasn't in the 2001 Confed Cup. I'd expect to see PPV this time around as their was in '99 when the US took part in the tournament...
Demosthenes is the best announcer in all of ancient Attica but he would more likely than not be biased and start to name-call the team he doesn't like. Also Anacreon would be perfect for the official cheerleader in the stands. Perfect guy to get the crowd to cheer loudly.
I hope it isn't on PPV. I won't be able to watch it if it is. As for language, I really don't care. Once I can identify all the players, I have no use for the commentary.
According to Oliver's site the game against Brazil is on Telefutura. How do you get this channel?I have the Spanish language packages for Dish and Direct TV and neither one carry this channel.Hopefully this game is on ppv.
Telefutura is OTA. If your market has Galavision and Univision, you may have Telefutura. Try a pair of bunny ears.
Bunny Ears? OTA? So are you saying you can pick up Telefutura with an antenna? There's got to be a better way. How agonizing. I guess I need to start checking the spanish restaurant tv circuit.
Isn't this something the much ballyhooed SUM should be involved in? By the way, what have they done after purchasing the World Cup coverage? I thought they were to be the promoter and source for most of the soccer coverage in the US.
Because SUM paid a dirt-cheap $40 million to FIFA for US English-language TV rights to WC 2002, WWC 2003, and WC 2006, SUM didn't get the other FIFA properties, which weren't going to make money for SUM anyway. Univision got US Spanish-language TV rights ALL FIFA properties excluding the World Club Championship from 2001 through 2006 because Univision paid $150 million.
I suspect this is the issue. When you consider all of the other US games they show, you would expect that ESPN would be willing and able to show the US games from this tournament, especially if SUM was involved in acquiring the rights. But if buying those rights means they have to give air time to all 16 games, including ones such as Cameroon-Turkey and New Zealand-Colombia, it just isn't going to happen outside of the World Cup.
Right. And there's also the case of what ESPN would do should the US advance to the semifinal or final. They'd have to bump whatever is usually slotted for those times, and you can bet that they and their sponsors wouldn't be too happy about that.
