this game is unwatchable. never again should a game be played on a surface where the players can't control the ball because it is bouncing all over. Horrible.
I disagree this game is pretty exciting to be scoreless this long, actually its a good thing the Ball is Flowing like that, makes them work harder for the ball.. good crowd too. still miss the sound wave band.... People are too judgementalon field turf.... oh well i guesss nothing satisfies them.
Turf is absolutely awful. It's a shame that Seattle and Toronto FC, the two best atmospheres in MLS, have to both use it.
I think BMO is getting kentucky blue too. We're getting grass for sure though. I guess that just leaves Qwest and Gillette if I'm not mistaken.
I agree, turf changes the dynamic of the game too much. It has no place in futbol let alone in a final.
I find this so funny this is the Championship, so many of yall complain about a decnt play turf, o god I guess yall want a golden spoon too????? again nothing wrong with the surface...
Yep, the game is on turf, little Billy will never walk again, and Millicent will never get her pony. In other words, waaaaahhhh.
Im sure to a english men we american have a fake accent to them... if any body trying to sound british i throw Whelock under the Bus... LOLOL
Funny, I've watched the whole game and it hasn't been so bad. It would be better if it were grass, but its far from unwatchable.
Right there with you. I would prefer grass but it is what it is. I wonder if the turf had anything to Morales knee injury. I mean it is obvious that the brunt came from Beckham's challenge, but it looked in the replay as if the cleat grabbed the turf and there was no give. Anybody else see what I saw?
if it's unwatchable, it's because of the lack of talent on the field, not the field itself. besides, beckham, donovan, findley, and beckerman, most of the players are very, um, talentless. nothing against rsl or la because they fought to get here, and deserve to be here, but to be honest, neither of these teams are truely the 2 best teams in the mls. and in my many years of playing, i've found people who complain about the pitch the most, are the ones with the least amount of talent. sure, grass would be awesome, but fieldturf is not nearly as bad as most of the crybabies want to pretend that it is.
The turf is brand new this year. It's only truly awful after 2-3 years. The teams played 4 games on turf this year and had practice time at Qwest. It really didn't make that huge a difference. That being said if anyone wants to pay for grass I won't complain.
What was wrong with the turf: 1. Did you see how many times players on both sides slipped and either fell or lost their balance? 2. There were numerous passes that didn't have the proper weight on them and went blasting past the intended target 3. The surface is too hard, causing an unusual degree of bounce If it had rained, OMG! With an open roof, why can't they consider grass in Qwest? If TFC can do it, so can the Sounders.
I saw the same thing. On grass Morales' foot would have just slipped and it wouldn't have hyperextended the knee. Gonzales also looked like he caught his cleats in the turf before his injury as well. It's hard to see exactly what happened to Ricketts, but it's possible the turf contributed to his injury as well, as both Ricketts and Findley were riding the slip-and-slide with serious momentum. Fifa has already shown a 50% increase in non-contact related injuries on turf (from 14% to 22%). Given what Beckham and Ljungberg have said publicly, I can imagine that the increasing number of turf stadia in MLS and their accompanying increase in injuries is an inhibitor to bringing some of the world's best, especially if they are later in a career and still competing for a national team spot (a la Beckham and Blanco).
Actually that injury can be completely attributed to the rookie of the year Gonzalez. He came in recklessly and his cleat landed right on Ricketts hand. They showed it a bunch of times in the stadium, Findley and Ricketts didn't even touch.
it's their first mls year. give them time. i don't think it'll happen right away, but in 4 or 5 years, maybe.
Ricketts' injury had absolutely nothing to do with the turf, as someone else has also stated. It had everything to do with him being way-laid by his own teammate.
All of these are also problems with grass, except #2 which is generally "Didn't have the proper weight and stopped well short of the player". Grass also has the added problem of "the ball hit a clump of grass, or a divot and bounced off in an unpredictable direction. All that being said, grass definitely better than turf since most problems with it are the result of poor field maintenance, so a proper maintained grass field will always be superior to even the best turf fields.
This affected an important Sounders match in 2002. The Quakes visited Seattle for a US Open Cup match at Interbay. The game was tied 3-3, after Ronnie Ekelund scored on a late PK to tie it up. Before the end of regulation, Darren Sawatzy was open all alone on a breakaway in the area and received a simple pass from Brian Ching to his feet that he could have easily one-timed into the goal. However, the ball hit a huge divot and bounced up which made it hard to control, and by the time he got a handle on it the opportunity was wasted. The game went into extra time, which we entered a man down after Ryan Edwards was ejected for his second yellow. Ariel Graziani eventually scored the golden goal winner in the second period of extra time, preventing PK's. I still want grass at Qwest Field.
