D'Avilla always looks like he's going to get caught in possession. He games the metrics in the manner of Calvo & Gaston, but is getting better every game.
I thought he held onto the ball in traffic for zero reason leaving to turnovers, never turned and drove upfield like he did in past games, he killed our last chance of an attack with a poor giveaway, amongst other giveaways. He was really upset with himself after getting subbed out, he knew he had a bad outing. Edit: just looked at Fotmob and he was our lowest rated player.
To me in the moment it was 100% Teran foul but the stop action post you fellas have been sharing on here certainly looks the opposite as if Teran got a poke tackle in. Maybe it will be on one of those PRO videos this week? But on this video you can see Son taps it and Teran lunges and misses it taking out the body of Son.
I think on the field the ref saw the ball moved right after Teran made the tackle and rightfully was not a PK. I think the bad camera angle replays without real close-ups are kind of an optical illusion that don't notice the Teran touch after the Son touch, and again it does not matter that Son touched it first because Teran tackled it away either way. I sure hope to see the PRO video on this, I'm certain they did not notice the Teran touch.
Overall I thought Teran had a great game this particular moment aside. He did have another frightening but excellent slide tackle in the box and overall had an excellent defensive game and a goal off a corner to boot. Sometimes when a center back gives up a penalty like that I'd get a little miffed but Son was through and had Teran not given the lunge it was most probably a certain goal anyway. Dean also with an amazing last ditch slide tackle, several timely blocks by the Fire and a couple amazing Brady saves combined with Fire missed chances means I feel pretty ok with the draw.
The big problem I see is that we’re celebrating three slide tackles in the box. That’s basically celebrating three mistakes.
Whelp, after watching the slo mo for the 30th time…I’m now of the belief it was indeed a foul. Teran’s impressive athletic ability allowed him to get side by side, extend beyond him for a play on the ball, and impressively charge Son off the ball. BUT his trialing foot gets into Son’s legs and trips him. Touching the ball first, or at all, does not matter! Maybe it could be argued Son was already going down from the hip to hip charge, but for me this does add to the play a ‘careless’ trip. Really close to a world class tackle…and it would not surprise me to see this not called as a foul in many leagues, the ref didn’t call it in the moment, but VAR, slo mo and a thousand looks provides a different view than a live view.
Conversely, the light push on Cuypers’ back didn’t look strong enough to bring him down but he falls like he took contact to the legs similarly to Son. If so, clearly that too should be a PK.
It was impressive Teran was able to (nearly) catch him. Son has been considered one of the fastest players, although he may have slowed a little.
I knew someone would say the 2hands to the back was soft Thing is, a) Cuypers is not a flopper, he regularly fights through ‘light’ contact, b) it doesn’t matter if he goes to ground or not….he was in clear position to receive the ball and take a shot on goal and received a push in the back knocking him off his attacking position. Had that not happened the ball would clearly have been put on frame. I remain of the belief that should have been called a foul and a PK
Looking at the other very close play that impacted the game… The LAFC keeper had done a notably good job making himself big and closing down the angles…plus the two defenders made for a very narrow window to hit. Guti did well to hit the window but was an inch left from the game winner So very close!
Nah, he had stopped moving towards goal after being pushed and the ball rolled by. He would have easily had a ‘pass it into the net’ shot.
For the record (is anyone taking this down?) I wasn't celebrating last ditch slide tackles, I was stating the Fire were pretty lucky to get the draw. Guti missed one that could have been 3-1 but also Brady with several big saves and some slide tackles mean it could have been a 5-2 loss had it not happened.
So the VAR didn't see Teran make contact with the ball, that was the reason a penalty was awarded. The camera angles were bad, but Greg Barkey in this review correctly states that Teran actually did make contact with the ball, but it does not change direction, so penalty . This is also not true, the camera from behind shows the ball shift right. So, VAR was wrong for the reason they intervened. Maybe they accidentally stumbled into the right call but the call on the field should have not been overturned based on VARs reasoning.
Unfortunately, no one pays attention to “clear and obvious” except maybe England who make a point to ignore it.
