I'll be the guy wearing the Rapids jersey. If for some reason there are two of us wearing them, I'll have the black Beer.com baseball cap on, possibly at a rakish angle.

If you ever do get to that point Bonji, don't buy the lifetime Tivo service. If you do, you can only use the service with that box. If you ever want to upgrade or the box breaks, you are out of luck. Just pay for the service monthly. Just my $.02.

Not an issue for us ReplayTV owners.

Little known fact: whether TiVo, ReplayTV, UltimateTV or even your DirecTV/Dish/Comcast channel guide... they all get their programming information from the same group of servers.

If you Google about the web a bit, you can find ways to hack your TiVo to never have to worry about paying for the program guide ever again.

 

Greenie, you seem to understand all this. Why hasn't anyone developed a PVR without the monthly service? I program my VCR to watch games I don't know why it'd be so hard to do the same with a PVR.

Sorry to take this too far a field. Back on topic. Brats (The sausages not the kids) would be a good addition to Buck-a-bud, it should Buck a brat and beer, or 3B or something like that.

 

Just a sidenote on the Tivo thing: I think it takes just under or just about 2 years for the "lifetime" (which yes, is sadly, lifetime of that particular box) Tivo service to break even - but I have been told by others who have Tivo that if you call Tivo after the box breaks (if it breaks in less than two years), and gripe to them enough (in a friendly nice way), they will usually cut you a deal/give you a credit on future service.

I assumed for me that it was a Murphy's Law thing - if I got the month to month service, the Tivo would last forever. If I bought the lifetime (of the box) it would break in less than 2 years.

Naturally, I bought the lifetime, and assume that with my griping skills, I can gripe with the best of them

But for soccer (or any television), Tivo is really one of the best things around.

 

Remember in the past when they had the thing where you got both a taco and a Bud for a buck?

My Tivo unit just bit the dust. I got a "refurbished but better than I had" unit for 49$, if I agreed to another year of service. Right now, there isn't anything I consider to be better for my needs, so I went with it. Just a reminder to those who don't consider it, while you can choose an event and ask Tivo to record it, if the event goes over the alotted time, it stops at the time the schedule says. I now record events manually, and add 15 minutes to it so that I don't end up missing the very end of a match. That happened several times last year, especially with overtimes.

 

You silly Tivo users. I've actually got UltimateTV, which auto-records an extra 1/2 hour on sports events.

Of course, with soccer not having overtime anymore, it's hard to see how that's useful for anything except filling up my hard drive.

On the other hand, when my dang relatives are in town, I have to record Cubs games, and they run over well past 1/2 hour, so the in-laws are pissed they missed the 42 inning of a 1-1 thriller at Fenway or whatever.

My biggest problem remains, I can only record 2 items at once, so when they show 5 soccer games at the same time, sacrifices must be made. And then they don't even bother to air one repeat of the games later! Sheesh, that hurts.

To answer somebody's question earlier about "free" Tivo and what not, there is free software that allows you to use any computer to act as a DVR (digital video recorder). So, there ya go. Just plug in and tune out.

I've been lucky with mine I guess - it's going on 3 years. I 've replaced the VCR and cable box in the mean time. I'm thinking about upgrading the box if it should go.

With Tivo you can set up extra recording time in the season pass feature (recording options). The only problem I have with the season pass is it tries to record the Dutch-team-I-don't-care-about vs. the-Italian-team-I-don't-care-about UEFA game 4 times.

We need a Buck-a-Newcastle night, running along with the Buck-a-taxi-ride-home promo.

 

I never understand the big deal about gamey-day parking lot promotions; why not just BYO and tailgate? Then every night can be Buck-a-Broon night.

Now, if we had Buck-a-Bud or Buck-a-Brat inside the stadium during a game -- as they do in Columbus -- then that's something to get excited about!

 

Two Tivos here (yes, different rooms), both with the lifetime. We've never had hardware trouble and I figure that's what warranties are for. Granted, we got both of these before the price increase last spring. UltimateTV? ReplayTV? Are these guys even in business any longer?

I was talking with a guy at work yesterday about the "no-name" DVR software that's being included in some cable boxes and with Dish Network. The interface is a lot harder to use, but the licensing costs are cheaper. We figured, "Geez, just spend a little more and get the better device!"

Then we realized we sounded like Mac owners.
