Star-Ledger, 3/11/03 The reason why I think this is worth talking about here is b/c remember how we were all excited about the idea of YN buying out Klubotnick? Well, according to this front-page Ledger article, YN might be dying. Some possibilities: -- Nets move to another city? -- Devils sold, or fold? If sold, where could they move? Hasn't the NHL tapped out virtually all possible relocation options? -- YES Network collapse because of no Cablevision deal? Somehow, Uncle Phil doesn't look nearly as bad now.
Actually, it reads that the arena deal collapsed because of Cablevision's lack of carrying the YES Network, not that the YES Network is collapsing.
Even though both the Nets and Devils have both found success in recent years, I always thought the Nets in particular needed to move to another city. They are simply crowded out by the Knicks in this market, and a new arena in Newark wasn't going to change that. Maybe they should move to San Francisco so they can crowd out the Warriors.
Re: Re: NMR - Newark arena deal dead; YankeeNets in serious financial trouble I realize that (no Cablevision --> less revenue --> less money for capital expenditures), but it's worth speculating about the long-term viability of YES in the current market. The Dolans are never going to give in to Steinbrenner, and Cablevision is the biggest cable network in the region. Less TV coverage hurts the Nets more than the Yankees IMO, but it still hurts both teams. Add to this the idea that the Devils may drop out of YN, and you're left with a network with one big team (Yankees), one small-market team (Nets), and lots of crap filler. Can it make enough money to survive? If this is all they're left with, I doubt it. YES doesn't have the ability to develop a national audience that other cable nets do, they don't have the infrastructure around them that MSG / FSNY have, and they don't have the teams to fill out the schedule appropriately.
Re: Re: NMR - Newark arena deal dead; YankeeNets in serious financial trouble It's not like I care about the Newark Arena very much, but I do despise Cablevision ten times more than I will ever despise YankeeNetsManUBucanneers. As far as I'm concerned I want to see the negotiating table blown up
Neither does Harrison. Looks like we're past the point of no return with them. Harrison wanted the soccer stadium more than Newark. Newark held out for the bigger fish.
Re: Re: NMR - Newark arena deal dead; YankeeNets in serious financial trouble I dunno about that. I think that the location of the Meadowlands and the ticket prices to see the Nets/Devils are the reasons why not that many were going to see these two successful teams. Knicks tickets have been always hard to come since Pat Riley started coaching @ MSG. You could see Jordan, Kemp & Robinson for a fraction of the price just off the turnpike. Now that the Nets are true contenders, prices went up and priced many fans out. Imagine heading to BJs or Costco and finding out they were charging the same prices as Food Emporium or Citarella- all of a sudden, it's not worth it. The Devils have been in a bad situation since they've moved from Colorado. They had to pay Rangers' ownership about $5-7 million a year for operating in the Blueshirts marketplace. While Lamoriarello's done wonders with his team, he's failed to truly upgrade his squad to a team that's truly dynamic- and that hasn't brought in new fans. I think the new arena would've given both teams a proper home- a city in which to call their own and a true destination for past, present and future fans. While it's not a cure-all, it'll certainly be a good place to start. That's what the Metros'll hopefully have in Harrison.
Woldn't it be such sweet irony if a completed and regularly 80% full Harrison stadium becomes the catylist for a rebirth of the Newark arena in Harrison? It's not less than an impossible situation to conceive. BTW, Devils fans are crap anyway. They don't deserve a new barn. Two cups since 1995 and they still can't fill the place unless the Rangers show up. Pathetic
ive heard of the nhl looking into portland (pittsburgh has been rumored to go there a few times), OK city, houston and even las vegas...portland most likely
To be fair (and I'm a Rangers fan), it's easy for a Rangers fan in NJ to get to MSG for a game, it's near impossible to get to the Meadowlands from NY for a Devils game. Well, maybe not impossible, but a huge pain in the a**. Give the Nets/Devils the arena in Newark with much the same advantage MSG has (right at Penn Station), and then you can see. Also keep in mind the Knicks and Rangers have much more history in the area than the Nets and Devils do. For all the good that does the Rangers these days.
The Devils and Nets problems go much deeper than location problems. For them it's fanbase problems. The Giants and Jets who play at the same place (albeit much less frequently) have no problems with attendance from either side of the river. And don't think for a minute that Yes cannot survive without the Nets/Devils or Cablevision. Cablevision is hurting much more than YES is over this fight, although we would all agree they would both do better with eachother. YES can show Yankee and Yankee related programming all they want and there is plenty of inexpensive filler out there. YES is doing just fine.
The Yankees were the only team to vote against the new collective bargaining agreement. My understanding is that they will have to pay an even bigger luxury tax. This has got to hurt YankeesNets. Would that affect YES as well? Isn't YES part of YankeesNets?
I'll give you 4-8 dates this April and May that Devils fans will fill their building, and you won't be able to say the same for the Rangers.
