reposted from slower.net: Looking for NYC fans of “underdog” World Cup teams I’m researching a story on World Cup fans in NYC. I’m specifically looking for places where fans of “underdog” soccer countries will be gathering to watch their matches. If you happen to know and have contact info for anyone in New York who supports, or knows supporters of one of these teams, or just generally is a serious international soccer fan, I would be pleased to learn of it. ...email me at eshepard@gmail.com. Thank you. Europe: Croatia Czech Republic Poland Portugal Serbia and Montenegro Ukraine Americas: Costa Rica Ecuador Paraguay Trinidad and Tobago Africa: Angola Ivory Coast Ghana Togo Muslim nations: Iran Tunisia Saudi Arabia Asia: Japan Korean Republic
Are you saying that the USA is not an underdog? Are you NOT interested in where USA fans will be congregating?
I think there's a beirgarten in Astoria that expects to be packed for Czech games, but they may not be underdogs. But if anyone wants to PM me with spots to watch the favorites play - ie, Brazil - bars packed with hot brazilian women and cold Brahma beer, feel free..
For Portugal - I would try the the Ironbound section of Newark http://www.vernonjohns.org/plcooney/brnwrest.html
I'd try the Blue and Gold on 7th Street before the new Kiev. And if anyone e-mails this guy, I'm sure that Croatians will be watching the game at the bar at Ponticello on Broadway in Astoria.
The more precise location would be Ukrainian Sports Club (Ukrajin'skij Sportvoj Klyub) - 122 2nd Avenue, b/w E 7th and 8th. It's a red brick building. Absolute center for any Ukie-related sporting events.
what about Switzerland? they have less of a chance of winning than the other teams you mentioned from Europe (with the possible exception of Serbia & Montenegro, which I thought isn't even a country anymore)
How is the second ranked nation considered an underdog? If anything, I'd say the US are the underdogs in Group E.
For Trinidad, suggest going to this site's forum and you can see where they plan on meeting at. http://www.socawarriors.net
